This was helpful. The first time I used a hairdryer I blew almost all the paint off canvas on to my wall. I’m standing there like the twilight one or something.i put a plastic tablecloth up on my wall after that. You jus have to practice-experiment to learn. It’s so fun. I love your work and Tammys’s and bunch of ithers

I had to go back and watch everything a couple of times and it didn’t seem to be a big difference in the distance Of the dryer but the position you were holding it. I have decided this is my problem but find I’m having a hard time just relaxing and allowing it to happen!! Thank you so so much for the experiment as it sure does demonstrate it’s the artist, the positioning, and just relaxing and allowing the dryer to do it’s job. Your work is amazing to say the very least!

Thank you for the experiment. This video was so helpful. I started to do acrylic pour recently and had a hard time with hair dryer. The hair dryer I bought for Dutch pour was too powerful and could not control. Now I have been trying to get one with a weak power with a temperature setting (don't know why but I thought cool air is a must) and after I looked this video, I learned that the power and cold or hot air don't matter.

LOL. Me too! OMG! I was not prepared for using the blowdryer on paint for the first time. My walls were not happy. LOL. Never mind everything else. I had put out all this plastic protective layering pretty far out on the surface I was working on, but I had no clue that having no experience with the blow dryer and paint would result in the paint flying past the area I had protected. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

the second dryer has a shorter tube, the third has a longer tube (the part where the air comes out). That does make a difference also. Also my dryer I use is over 30 yrs old (Vidal Sassoon Quiet 1600 - bought in high school - just had a 30 yr reunion lol) and I lost the concentrator years ago so made my own with tape and cardboard and it works good for me.

I have become obsessed with trying different blow dryers and this is what I have found. As far as moving the paint around I agree that consistency of the paint is the key but the shape of your design is also impacted by aerodynamics, so motor power/performance/ watts, the neck (long/short, shape of grill inside), the concentrator nozzle and how you move the dryer also has an impact. When I test dryers, I just move them in a straight line to remain as consistent as possible in the movement. Motors - A more powerful motor can blow paint off the canvas even if you are not too close. I have an eGO1200 Watt (produces 1000 Watts in U.S.) that came with a rounder & wider concentrator and it can’t blow water much less paint but that same concentrator on my Conair 1600-Watt Infiniti Mini produces a very nice shape, much better than the narrower angled concentrator that it came with. I have 2 Conair 1875-Watt dryers, Salon Performance (orange) & Ceramic Tech Motor Pro (blk). The Salon Performance blows significantly less down the middle causing the shape to split in two at the end. When I looked down the nozzle, the inside grill is only split into 4 sections with a significant round obstruction in the middle causing the air to blow around it therefore spitting the shape in two. The Ceramic Tech’s grill is spit into 6 sections without the obstruction to split the shape, so I prefer this one. I too was also shocked at how weak your 1875 Watt sounded so I did some Googling. Apparently motor performance matters too, no matter what the Watts are. The motor on your 1875 Watt produces a weaker air flow that still allowed for good control of shaping. Most likely if you used a newer 1875 Watt in that same brand the motor performance would have improved over 10+ yrs. so you would have blown the paint off the canvas as you expected. Most of the newer models also have more narrow necks and concentrators so as to deliver a more powerful air flow for drying hair. Concentrators - I usually prefer one that is more rounded and curves inward instead of flaring out. When I move to really big canvases the flared concentrator possibly would work better. I really love the big canvases. I have a blank 36” x 48” hanging on my wall as inspiration but I’m not there yet. If you are new like me to fluid art, I suggest playing around with different hair dryers because as a tool it is important. At first, I was buying them online but now I mostly just stop at thrift stores when I happen to see one. I could go on and on but this is already too long. Do a little Googling on aerodynamics and that might help with understanding the dryer you are using. As a beginner I can only pray that the longer I work at it the better my paintings will be but I think I will run out of wall space before I produce a more Kanella or Rinske like painting.😂

Thanks for the hairdryer comparisons Sorry about the melting of the dryer. I'm glad you referred to acrylic skins because I hate unnecessary waste. I loved two of the large puddles that built op on your silicone mat in this video and kept waiting to see what you would do with the design to preserve them for an acrylic skin project. I plan to watch your video about skins. I worked in the craft industry about 30 years, all different kinds of crafts. The majority of it was for Tulip dimensional paint. I was crafts person and you are Art. Side giggle. I Do remember the ground breaking premier of Mod Podge and it's evolutionary uses. Yes I'm old. But I digress as most old people do. I hope you did something with those two large puddles of paint. I have to confess that I've never done a pour yet. I have collected most of the basic materials and have spent many hours watching all kinds of artists and their thanks for letting me reminisce. I guess it's time to put up or shut up. Acryli poring will be joining 1 more of my way too many endevers and half finish projects. Right now i'm trying to learn 4 other areas trying various other creative talents. I love your art.

Kanella this was funny! I went through a similar issue with changing hair dryers! 🤣 Anyway, my problem back when I first started was, my hair dryer came with a wide mouth attachment and as a result I ended up with blobs of paint, well, everywhere! I finally got a narrow mouth attachment and I was off and running. Also the great thing about the dryer I have, it has an in between setting. I can keep it on low and hit the “cool” button to give it a little more blow power without setting it on high. I love my dryer and I think I might go into a deep depression if anything ever happens to it! 😬🙄🤣 Great demonstration! ❤️
