I am a U.S. Citizen of 45 years with a Bachelors degree, served a year in Americorps and work in the trades. When I realized I couldn’t afford to live in Colorado, I went back East. I couldn’t imagine just showing up in a random mountain town, where many are struggling themselves and expect to be showered with necessities. This is beyond what it appears on the surface.

If they refuse to assist Federal enforcement to be a sanctuary city, they should receive no assistance from the federal government in order to do that. My advice, if people in your community really want to help people who have come illegally, citizens as individuals should open their personal homes and wallets to assist these people.

I've advocated for some time that we here in Texas send the illegal immigrants to places like Carbondale, that call themselves "welcoming cities" and "sanctuary cities." They have invited these people (we keep telling them to stay home), but... "Carbondale’s city council on Monday K April 10, 2017) approved an official ‘welcoming community’ designation that’s essentially the same as a sanctuary city declaration." You invited them. You provide for them. And we really should be sending you more.

Sorry about that. We have the same problem in Germany. For example they put 60 "migrants" in a hotel in a town of 80 citizens. People of the town cried because of that. Our goverment does not care. They didn't even informed them beforehand. It is all escalating over here too. They are flooding our country with people. Instead of giving them cash money they changed to a prepaid creditcard system - no more cash or transfer to account. This seems to scare off some of them. But unfortunately not all of Germany practices it yet. It is all so bad. There hasn't been shelter for homeless U.S. Men in Carbondale or Glenwood Springs for the 20 plus years I've been going to Sunlight. The mountains in the Northwest are a hard place to live and work. Resources are expensive and infrastructure hard to maintain. Not a place for tropical people.

If they work in Carbondale do they have a green card and pay taxes, medicare and social security or get paid cash and not pay any taxes? Employers that hire these people should be fined if they pay them cash and do not use e-Verify to determine if they can work legally. As a minimum the mayor should talk to the businesses that hire illegals and tell them to not hire them since it appears to be a factor that draws the illegals to the town. Maybe the city council can vote a law that fines businesses that hire the illegals and also turn them to the IRS so that these businesses will be required to pay taxes on the wages that the businesses pay them.
