Every weapon has a role. A sniper rifle is meant as a long range precision weapon and an assault rifle is good for clearing rooms and buildings while an submachineguns are good for close range engagements. There is a role this ship plays. I hope it has a good one.

Looks like they’re going to be mounted on the Canadian Type 26 CAnadian Surface Combatant class of 15. This should make for interesting comparisons between the CanadianType 26’s versus the British and Australian Type 26’s with their BAE Mk45’s. An comments about which design is better?

It would amuse me to see such a weapon developed to a higher calibre to deliver a higher rate of fire for such missions as fire support for shore bombardment. Such future applications that historically were performed by large bore naval rifles will be performed by naval weaponized railguns.

Many missions can be accomplished with different modules. It was designed with Iran in mind. Pesky swarming boats, mining of the gulf, drop off and pick up of special forces. I would think it would do well against the pirates around Somalia and Yemen.

I can imagine the morale on the USS Jimmy Carter SSN-23. You are thinking of WWII and before tactics. The only US ships (in service) with significant armor protection are the CVN's. Some compartments may have a kevlar lining (CIC) but that is about it. My first ship was the USS Buchanan DDG-14. We were the only ship in the Navy (at the time) authorized to fly the scull and crossbones. Although we only flew it during unreps.

It's because of the special feeeding system of this gun i assume... it's mechanical and not recoil operated... you can also reverse the shell back in to it's revolving shell storage if you change your mind on blowing shit up :D

Wow... It's firing rate is incredible for that caliber... Just for compare, with a good trained crew in any tank, let's say an Abrams or Leopard 2A5, in the first minute the system could barely fire about the half that thing...

I'm trying to design a mech using today's tech. Right now, I'm in search of a sniper rifle. I WAS going to consider this, assuming you could somehow modify it for a magazine, but I decided to withdraw this option when I realized just how MASSIVE this gun actually is. My projected mech would be able to carry it, but the gun is a full meter taller than it is. Talk about cumbersome.

Hrm... I'm honestly not sure how I feel about 130mm gun development when most of the bigger naval powers are focusing on 76mm mounts. 76mm mounts can achieve a higher rate of fire and are generally better in the anti-aircraft role, and the higher rate of fire is more important than the (marginally) greater damage caused by the 130mm round compared to the 76mm round. Not to mention that neither gun system is really sufficient for land-based bombardment, which some of the bigger world navies are starting to look back into - for those kinds of operations, you'd want at least 150mm mounts, probably 200mm mounts ideally.

the 16 inch was a great and destructive weapon that was used through the gulf war and would still be used if it did not take thousands of people to run the boats that carried the massive wepons

Oerlikon's are designed, produced, and sold by the swiss mostly for export. The Coronado and Independence are Littoral Combat Ships designed to execute missions near shore in shallow water. They do not resemble cruisers in any way.

Modern wars don't really need that kind of firepower. If you compare a 406mm gun on an Iowa to a 155mm gun on a Zumwalt firing guided rounds, you quickly realize three things: 1. The battleship has to get four times closer to the shore. (38km vs. 150km range) 2. The shell will be four times less accurate when it actually reaches the target. (200m vs. 50m CEP) 3. The extremely powerful explosive yield of the shell will cause severe collateral damage. In short, a JDAM is better.

Oto Melara made several 40mm naval cannon and SPAAG prototypes in the past but it seems that their weapon systems rarely get adopted. The only one that is relatively more well known is the BREDA fast 40 naval gun. :(

I know we have these on some of our ships here in Norway and as a former Marine I love these, but my question is the barrel interchangeable. Could you swap out the old barrel with these longer improved once or do you need to change out the whole system?
