The programmable air burst rounds are what this gun system is all about. Dug in infantry can be engaged with direct fire, that explodes overhead, with an effect similar to mortar and artillery shells. Good results on aircraft can also be had with this ammunition.

Unfortunately it costs too much, 95% of all ammunition fired in a conflict like Ukraine hits absolutely nothing, especially small rounds, it's blind fire, or suppressive fire, cheap rounds that can be made for a few cents, quickly in large numbers, these intelligent rounds can cost hundreds if not thousands, the smart ammunition made for the Zumwalts 2 deck guns cost nearly $80.000 a round, that's why they don't use them or train with them it's too expensive. So imagine all those Bradley's with 50ml guns and smart ammunition, how much would that cost just to arm them with a couple of boxes? How many new Bradley's will the US build, id say 500 at the lowest. I love the programmable Smart rounds, they are trick as fuck but not even the US could afford to use them, not at this time, would they ever be cheap to build and buy though? I can't see it, so it's just another clever gimic with no practicality, maybe special forces? But that's it, regular units no chamce

The smaller / older brother, the 25mm Bushmaster, on the Bradley, has shown that with a few shots and tiny bit of luck, it can get between the hull & the turret of a Russian main battle tank and take it out, and we've seen that not once but at least 3 times. Now give us a version which is not much bigger, not much heavier, not much more expensive, has roughly the same rate of fire, but double the calibre ~ that's got to be a lethal and desirable weapon. Given this is not armament for an MBT, but armament for an armoured personnel transport, (like a Bradley) and we're looking to a real advantage / over-reach here.

It’s designed to basically take the space of the 25mm with no issues. The larger ammo will probably mean they will have to lower TOW storage from 10 to 8. But I doubt few Bradley drivers would need all 10 before being able to resupply. With that said there are some new concepts the Army is considering. Truth is, they really aren’t needed now.

The question is, can the 50mm penetrate the armor of vehicles that the cannons from the 25/30.35/40mm can not. If the 50mm is not able to penetrate the armor of MBT while something smaller than the 50mm can penetrate anything short of a MBT, then I have to wonder at the added utility of the 50mm (other than bragging rights to say that my gun is bigger than your gun). The definite negative of the 50mm is that the volume of the 50mm round is in the neighborhood of 4 times that of 25mm and the volume that can be allocated for ammunition is always limited. The result is that the individual rounds might have a much bigger impact than smaller rounds, but if you can only carry a quarter as many rounds, does the 50mm still represent a step up in combat effectiveness. The recent video of two Bradleys hammering a T-90 in Stepove illustrates my point. The front armor of the T-90 had nothing to fear from the 25mm of the Bradley. But the 25mm didn't need to penetrate the armor of the T-90 in order to completely obliterate the combat effectiveness of the T-90. All modern tanks have a much higher combat effectiveness because of their advanced sensors, cameras and computer system. But all of the key bits are the cameras and sensors, and they are all on the on on the *_outside_* of the armor. So while the 25mm rounds from the Bradley had zero chance of killing the crew, detonating the ammunition in the turret or disabling the engine, they were more than enough to obliterate all of the cameras and sensors on the outside of the armor . And with many more rounds and a high rate of fire, the Bradley chain gun was able to put so many rounds on the front of the T-90 that other than the direct viewing periscopes, I doubt the crew was able to see *_anything_*

IFV armor is still a thing. Take the BMP-3M from Russia for example. Assuming it is as good as the Russians advertise (let's be real, it won't), then this thing could hit it and pen through the armor at longer ranges. Not to mention the HE round is likely to be much larger than that of an M242 25mm.

This is actually made, "light" as it is, with tanks in mind. The currently Bradly's 25mm is already enough to damage most Soviet/Russian tanks, with a few sustained bursts, as seen in one of the most recent videos, with a Bradley going up against a top of the line T-90 Russian tank (the T-14 are largely a dozen or two prototypes, that broke down during a parade: can't mass produce and use such a weapon system, when it is still so unproven, mechanically anyway)... This being a 50mm and with all the updated technologies going into it, standing on top of the already proven 25mm, it WILL likely be enough to destroy most tanks with 2-3 shots. Tanks could, of course, be given thicker armored; but it'd slow them down... so the current thickness of most high end tanks are likely not increasing substantially (if new/tougher/thinner materials can't be found). (.....Projectiles/bullets can be delivered very differently... from Bronze Age gun power, to something in between, to electromagnetic power.... so small projectiles can be made to have extreme penetrating power, with less cost. The developmental RAIL GUN, both China and the US are purusing this.... is one such system: it is using electromagnetic power to launch a simple projectile up to 5,000 miles per hour... so complexity resides in the rail gun, not the gun-powder powered projectile... making projectiles orders of magnitude cheaper to make and to buy.....)

Awesome I love it, watching this on full beans hitting a target must be scary good!! I just wonder how big could they actually go before it just won't work, I don't mean practically I just mean as an exercise in what's capable? What does the IOWA Battleship have now, 16inch, imagine they took one barrel and made into this type of gun, everything built massively, I don't think it's possible to fire such a massive round like a high burst, 100 rounds a minute, it would probably blow up or the massively heavy machinery would just smash together at high speeds, but what about 100ml or 200ml rounds? I think they could, like I said it would not be practical, too heavy for most vehicles, so it would have to be fixed, fixed where? Maybe a base to defend or a building, but then 200ml rounds being fired at 200 per minute, that's the definition of over kill, so it would not be practical at all, I'm surprised the Russians haven't built one then, they like to do that, they think we couldn't build over kill weapons but we can its just that we understand practicality and a need for a weapon, they do it because they think its getting one over on the west... Russian mentality!!!

I don't see how you need much "audacity" or "engineering prowess" to develop a 50 mm chain gun nowadays. Medium size caliber guns like that have been existing since before WW2 and that particular caliber just has been out of fashion for a while. The Germans during WW2 used 50 mm guns, both as their primary anti tank weapon on the "Panzer 3" in the early days of the war and later as a aircraft weapon. There also is the Swedish Bofors 57 mm naval gun which has been in use since the early 70s and also was tested as a Infantry FIghting Vehicle weapon on several test vehicles. Also, there are socalled "Revolver Guns" since the 80s, mostly designed and built by the German Rheinmetal and Mauser companies, which also don't use the exhaust impulse of the firing round to load the next round, but also use electrical mechanisms to load the rounds into a rotating revolver drum and kind of being a half way in between thing between a regular gun and a multi-barrel Gatling style gun. They are basically like Gatling guns, but only using one barrel while loading that one barrel like you would load the multiple barrels of a Gatling gun. That totally eliminates the need for a bolt and allows for variable and very high rates of fire, while being lighter, less complicated and more precise than actual multi-barreled Gatling guns. Two other advantages of that system are that much like old revolver handguns, you can fire cartridges of differing lengths from them. They just have to be shorter than the length of the revolver barrel and because you don't need a bolt, you can leave the back of the firing chamber open and thus make a "no recoil" gun out of it by firing small rockets from it instead of regular ammunition. My point being, compared to that a chain gun is a rather simple and unsophisticated piece of technology nowadays. I'm also surprised that there is no data link ring at the end of the barrel, like on the 30 mm and 35 mm Rheinmetall gun barrels used on the PUMA IFV or the MANTIS/Skyranger air defense systems to program air burst ammunition with. Since this gun uses air burst ammunition, I assume the round is told when to burst before being fired by a data link system inside or near the firing chamber instead, but that has a disadvantage compared to the "muzzle data link" system on the Rheinmetall guns. Those first measure how fast the round leaving the muzzle actually is before calculating where it needs to burst and then programming it. A system that programs the round before it is fired can't account for slight variations in the propellant load, atmospheric factors or other factors that influence how fast the round will really move once it is fired. As anyone who ever used a velocity measuring device while firing a gun (or watched Gun KZfaqrs do it) knows, even the best, most expensive ammunition has pretty significant variations in muzzle velocity. Only by actually measuring it at the muzzle and then calculating and programming the air burst distance, you can ensure that the projectile actually bursts where you want it to.

@@Brunel1859 Yes, which is why many guns that were already used during WW2 are still in use now. What I find strange here is that they developed a new 50mm gun but didn't incorporate the state of the art when it comes to where gun and ammo technology are right now. As I explained in my initial comment, I think that a muzzle data link device ought to kind of be mandatory nowadays, to utilize the full potential of air burst ammunition. As it looks now, they really just upscaled the old 25mm gun the Bradley uses without doing anything clever. That is why I pushed back against the swooning marketing language used in the video.

@TrangleC Using embedded sensors and instruments in the barrel and extremely fast fire control and computing system, you can measure and calculate the muzzle velocity just after initiating powder deflagration and then using electrical impulses to program ammunition before it leaves muzzle to control detonation distance before munition triggers for maximum dispersion of payload saturating an aerial region, presumably with high density material pellets at high velocity if for ballistic interception as you've mentioned, just before tracked target flies into the dispersion field and gets peppered (and prob premature detonation, guidance system destruction, etc). While fundamentally, they all work towards the same purpose and use the same principles, the difference between modern day and WW2 weapons platforms are the fire control systems, ballistic calculations systems and in some cases, payload control systems. This has made drastic differences contrasting the eras of comparison with the increases in accurate to precision fire and effects where WW2 weapons depended on quantity requiring laying down a sheer wall of lead with dozen and dozens of emplacements can now be replaced with one turret. Previous US capital ships would have arrays of like many dozens AA emplacements during WW2 like fleet aircraft carriers with about ~40 maybe closer to 50 now have like 2 maybe 4 CIWS platforms, IIRC. Of course, just what I figure so make of it what you will.

The ammo for this is way under powered. Instead compared to the 57 mm Soviet anti air craft round that's a proven design. The Russians are making a custom turret with this gun. With a 7km range and sensors fuzed rounds.
