LCD Panel Replacement of an A2289 MacBook Pro by Vancouver Mac Service Centre (vancouvermac.ca) in Vancouver, BC, Canada.
When the LCD panel gets cracked or otherwise fails, replacing the LCD panel is the most economical option. The whole display assembly can be replaced, but all the other components of it can be reused. Replacing the LCD panel is a difficult repair which takes 2-3 hours, however, when done properly it will be impossible to tell that a replacement has been performed.
This procedure is identical for all 13" MacBook Pro models from 2016 -2020, including A1706, A1708, A1989, A2159, A2159, A2289 and A2338. For 13" MacBook Air models A1932, A2179 and A2337, the steps are very similar.

So I decided to replace a screen for a friend. I had a choice between replacing just the LCD for $125 brand new or the entire assembly used at $135. That extra ten dollars is well worth it. Just for my satisfaction I played around with the broken screen and it was a nightmare, and not as easy as shown here and I’m fairly competent at fixing things. Knowing what I know now, with more practice I’m sure I could do it but doing this on a one time basis, it’s better to get the assembly.

@@veeidoltouch24 I got mine from a seller on eBay. I’m very careful to choose one that has returns because you never know the condition until it arrives. This one was listed as “B” but it was in near perfect condition.

yep, no chance rubber bumper coming out not broken and LCD coming off non destructively. Had a dust-gate flex cable problem and attempted to remove the screen to reflow a new flex, not happening. Complete LCD assembly from China definitely lower grade. Color hue slightly off. Backlight not as bright and + - in discreet steps. Webcam seems lower quality. But the frame is first class haha

Excellent. I was looking for how to replace LCD only. Cause I have a horizontal-noise-LCD. But finally, I found It's better to replace LCD assembly, not only LCD. Thank you for your video😊

i didn’t see a heat gun/heating pad used in the video, which is encouraging for me as i’d like to replace the LCD panel on my own laptop without having to use heat for the adhesive. however, this does look like a repair more advanced than what i’ve previously experienced, so i’m considering just buying the LCD assembly instead. it’s unfortunate because i don’t really want to replace any additional hardware just because of a black stripe on the left of the screen (due to damage on the bezel). i don’t want to pay apple for something i can (probably) fix myself

Dont use rubbing alcohol, ruined my first screen with his method. Alcohol gets under the bottom layer and your screwed. Lots of heat is the way!!!! You could put it in the oven for a bit to raise ambient temp (I use my heating mat). then heatgun around the edges of glass just keep moving and youll be good. Get it hot till you can barely touch it. Get a pack of proper plastic playing cards for phone repair. use thin metal to start then switch to the plastic cards. With enough heat comes apart no problem.

bro the small cable is only the data cable to the battery. the battery is still connected under the black cover. please follow the Service Manual if u dont know how to disconnect battery/

The battery has a battery management board which cuts off power when the battery data cable is disconnected. There is no need to disconnect the main battery connector.

Hello! Great job. Can I know if I can wipe off coffee stain spill after I do this? I’m worried I might damage the diffuser if I wipe off the stain since u said the diffuser is very sensitive and not to be touched

Generally when the display gets internally liquid damaged it is not worth it to try and repair the screen, I would recommend just buying the whole display assembly and save yourself the headache. It is not possible to clean the diffuser, and while it is possible to replace the diffuser sheets, that is a complicated process itself.

Hello, I just replaced my MacBook 1706 with a MacBook 1708 screen, now my Touch Bar doesn't react anymore. Is this normal? Any one a solution? Thanks a lot

I would recommend reseating the Touch Bar digitizer cable connection, that one is particularly sensitive. Or, if you are saying that the brightness cannot be changed by the Touch Bar, then the A1708 screen is most likely a newer screen from a T2 model (A1989, A2159 etc). They have a different firmware EDID section that will cause the brightness not to change if mismatched.

Generally I've received good parts, just a few rare instances of minor defects (dead pixels, etc). I can't speak to the quality of whole display assemblies from AliExpress, only LCD panels.

would using moderate heat be a bad thing for loosening adhesive around lcd?

I know this is an old comment but still wanted to respond. I tried using heat to loosen it up but it made matters worse because it starts to heat up the panels underneath the broken screen if you’re not careful. If I had to do it again, I’d just use some type of adhesive loosener.

Heat seems to be pretty ineffective against the type of adhesive that Apple uses to adhere the LCD panel to the display assembly chassis. I find alcohol is much more efficient to loosen the bond.

If too much heat is applied, it can warp the optical sheets
