I worked as a crane tech for years and a load test is done every four years on any crane over a five ton load limit. The test is done with a known weight if 125% of the working load limit picked up and has to hold that load with no creep for one minute. We had the contract that inspected the gantry crane that lifted the space shuttle to load it onto the 747 if it were to land at Edwards in Ca. It always had to be ready. We also did SeaLaunch in Long Beach before it went to Russia permanently. It loaded rockets for space onto a converted oil rig.

The cruise ship "almost hitting the bridge" was an optical illusion. I was in the Navy stationed in Charleston, SC. We used to have to pass under the Cooper River Bridge on our way out to sea. We would tell the new guys to go up on the signal bridge and crank down the mast so we wouldn't hit the bridge. Standing on the deck of the ship, it honestly looked like we would hit it but the fact was, there was more than enough room to clear it. (There was no way to "crank down the mast")

It's amazing that that train was only 4 cars too. BTW, tractor-trailers get stuck like that often when they are fully loaded. The distance between the wheels makes it possible.
@Fetidaf
@Fetidaf 11 ай бұрын
It has nothing to do with how loaded it is. Car haulers and some flat beds are only a few inches off the ground, that’s why they get stuck on some railroad crossings… railroad crossings they’re not supposed to go over and should know better than to try.
@u1zha
@u1zha 11 ай бұрын
@@Fetidaf Probably the loaded weight makes them a bit closer to the ground, so he wasn't wrong?
@Fetidaf
@Fetidaf 11 ай бұрын
@@u1zha they don’t though… Most trailers actually sit a little higher when they’re loaded because the airbags compensate to get the weight off the helpers, up until about 38-40k lbs they sink a tiny bit. Plus car haulers are usually pretty light. If you have 8 cars on it it’ll only be about 25k-30k lbs. the trailers themselves are pretty heavy so they can’t haul a whole lot, weight-wise. If anything it’ll be like 1/2” lower, a dry van with 46k lbs sits about that much lower than empty. It would’ve gotten stuck regardless of the weight

I’m thinking way back in a mechanical drafting school when 1 of our 2 teachers put a challenge project for us to draw out a farm tractors field portable light weight jack that is stable enough,strong enough and safe to be used in the field by one person. Thus why in you bringing up the subject of car haulers getting stuck over railroad crossings….to come up with a solution in somehow fabricating hydraulics connected to the wheel axles to raise the entire framework during those crossings…nothing extreme but inches only.
@Fetidaf
@Fetidaf 11 ай бұрын
@@vasquezalfred they’ve already got air bags, could have some secondary ones that are bigger or ones that push up a bit more… would definitely be easier to retrofit that than a hydraulic Jack of sorts… i think you’re on to something though.

8:51 I can tell you exactly why the car hauler got stuck. Same reason tractor-trailers always get stuck at grade crossings. The trailer got high-centered because the grade was too steep. Basically one set of trailer wheels on each side of the hill, and the top of the hill is literally holding up the trailer. A CDL should know better.
