There's been a lot of discussion about dimple lock picking lately so I thought a tips video on my Yale 7-pin padlock might be useful to those of you just starting out. Dimple locks really aren't that difficult, certainly no more difficult than regular pin tumblers, so don't be dissuaded by their weird appearance.
Info from Polyclef: The Yale is a relabeled Mul-T-Lock Integrator where the 6th pin is a "launcher pin". Your key says 666 on it means 6th pin is launcher on keyway 066C. There are 2 different launcher pins "E" & "P" stamped on key after the 666 number.

My hope is that you can tune audio for even more internal lock sounds. I know there are precision sensors that may even help you lighten that naughty bucket, a bit. I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that would be very interesting, occasionally. Just warn us first. "In just a minute, guys, I'll be switching to the Invasive Micro Stethoscope k5000."

Funny! I actually have a contact microphone that I'd like to attach to the lock and record it on a different track, but want to get the voice track perfected first. It is a gremlin that I've been struggling with...

@@bosnianbill I don't know if you're doing this now, but if not, I think it's worth doing, if it's possible to do. Getting those various clicks "up front" in your videos' audio tracks sounds like it would be great for us subs. I guess that should increase your subs, as well. A piezoelectric pickup would probably do the trick very nicely.

Bill, I would describe the noise as a low level high frequency chirping or cricket sound throughout the video but masked most of the time by your voice commentary. It is most noticeable for a fraction of a second in the silence following and in sync with each word but slightly delayed. It very well may be a digital encoding artifact or slite overload in the digital domain. It could also be some weird digital anomaly that only shows up after You Tube re encoding, in which case you may only see it in a You Tube playback. In any case it is not the kind of thing that would keep me from the lockpicking mastery that is Bosnianbill. Good luck in finding the cause.

Ok, I'm pretty sure you have convinced me to branch out and try my hand at some dimple locks, and provided me an excuse to purchase some dimple picks, much to my wife's dismay! Appreciate the thought and effort put into explaining the operation and idiosyncrasies (I know, big word, thank you word suggestion feature ) of these different lock systems. Sound has never given me any issues, always sounds clear on my end. Thanks Bill!

Audio was fine. Though that's from the perspective that I watch you because your approach goes well with my lifelong interest in locks, picking, disassembly, and fabrication. As long as I can understand you and the video is sharp, I'm ok with allowing my brain to auto-correct any little issues. If I thought about it in context of all the sound production stuff I learned, I could list noises and the current wrinkle with the voice and suggest stuff to ameliorate that, but I'm usually so focused on what you're doing, I only really noticed the sound because you brought it up.

That "oblong" pin reminds me of some DOM pins that are cut to an "arrow like" point so they have a very small "picking" profile as opposed to a round pin. The DOM pins have an angular "anit-rotation" shape so they always remain in a thin "flat" profile as you look straight down the keyway at the pins. This makes them a lot more difficult to pick because they are so narrow and sharp plus your dimple pick can actually turn against the flat side of the pin and cause the flag of the pick to go up into the pin hole becoming wedged against the side of the pin making it difficult to extract the pick!

Don'z Lockz I have to agree, don.. I looked around for a comment like this from someone who wouldn't just seem like they were bi+ching. There's definitely something I couldn't attribute to any onscreen picking or other motion. Odd I couldn't hear it in headphones as much. Maybe phasing issue. Jingling, almost. But not from the lock. Maybe Bill just decided to wear a noisy watch today.

Yeah, it's been an issue for a bit now. More pronounced in the last couple videos. Not sure if the gain is too high for the mic itself or if it's just something that takes place during a post processing stage.

Dave Kimball I think it's the Mic or gain not post but weird things happen. I was in broadcast tv but not anymore so can't ask a sound engineer. Bill has to contract one in with all the thousands he is making in Locksport.😅🍺✌

Another fantastic video. Sound was a bit noisy. High end hiss/wind like sound. Might be a connection problem rather than the items themselves. I’ve not even tried a dimple lock yet. Still struggling to pick cheap locks lol. I’ve not learned how to get a click noise yet. I’m assuming I have a problem with my tensioning. Good luck getting that lock back together 🙈 A video on putting it back together would be fun too lol Thanks again for all of your videos. You are an inspiration to lots of us

Bill from 11:20 EXACTLY what your're asking about sound thats when it's happening, scratching itchy noisies like a cross between a cricket and a cicada Edit: Actually I'm stupid, it's all the way through from start to end, I just hadn't noticed it right away
@ianwatson4692

Bosnianbill the sounds are right through the video but easy to ignore. Best way to describe is probably like a broken speaker where the high pitch sounds like a letter t or s can have a high sound to them. I watch you on my 55” LG OLED 4K tv. The noise is also on my iPhone X. It’s only the high tones a bit like a high pitch crackle sound. It could be that the gain is set slightly to high on your high tones. If you use a mixer, it sometimes happens when you need to spray some cleaner on the sliders. I don’t think you are using one but it’s a similar sound. It’s only a minor technical hitch Doesn’t spoil your videos

I just want to know what model that Yale was and if you can buy it without taking out a loan. Can't imagine how to reload that one easily. Almost reminds me of something Medeco-related on #6. An odd rattle at the end of vocalizations sometimes. Noticed right around the time you mentioned the voting button for the sound.

when putting it together again you can turn the cylinder any way you want and also maybe move it like a follower, so you can first put in springs and spools and later the pins. Also i'd use a rubber band to keep things together until putting them back in the lock.

The 'loose change' sound that people are hearing is likely from any noise gate settings you have set. If you are doing a gate or compression/limiter, that can sometimes introduce that 'loose change' sound of a rattle almost. More noticeable the more aggressive you get towards limiting background noise. Looks like you are using an h5. So roll back a little on the limiting and maybe the compression a little. If you want to look up noise gate settings that might be the right googlefu to find what you need

I listen using a separate amplifier and good quality two way sealed speakers. What i derived was a wider frequency range with a peak between 1,200 Hz or so to around 250 Hz. A high end cutoff about 8k, no doubt you tubes doing and a more probable roll off around 5k or so. Taking into account the pre emphasis of my tonal adjustments......Low end roll off may be closer to 800hz or so +/- a bit on both ends... Bill, a little something for you to experiment with : A lapel electret condenser mike. The kind you clip on a sport coat - etc. A lump of Plasticine clay molded around the mike stuck to the lock. Mike body touching the lock. Lots and lots of clear pin sounds that way. Fine tune the levels and there it is, cheap easy and no fiddles. just stick it on the lock - done. Not sure how many inputs you have to work with, but it looks like at least 2. That's my 50 cents worth..

John, thanks for the info. I'm already on it! I have a contact microphone ready to go, but first wanted to kill the gremlin that seems to be plaguing the voice track. Insofar as tracks, I'm using a Zoom F4, so can record up to 6 tracks if needed (it isn't). At most, I'll use 3 tracks (me, a guest when required, and the contact mic). I do have a Sony Levalier ECM 44B Pro, but want to give the new Heil PR-40 (dynamic) a chance first. I've used the 44B a couple of times and the voice quality is not nearly as good. I've dumped the three Yeti Blue Pro condenser mics as they're omni directional and are really bad about picking ALL ambient noises. The PR-40 is highly directional so isn't picking up NEARLY as much outside noise. Hopefully, some tweaking in post will clean up whatever artifacts that are causing my gremlin. Fingers crossed.
@johnrobinson357
@johnrobinson357 6 жыл бұрын
I'll keep this short Bill. The gremlins could be electrical fields around the mic pre amp, Mike itself,ground noises OR in post production. The latter is just digital noise - too much resolution may cause that. And/or generated By/within your editing software. Sounds like a pain in the cheeks - no pun. Use a single ground source, one that really goes to earth itself to ground the audio toys - AND ground the PC doing the editing work. Good grounding can go a long way towards fixing mystery sounds, and may just solve your issues in a whack. I'm done...Good Luck i do not envy your position, remember no ground loops - single point grounds all to one ground only.

Cool to see more dimples, sadly not on cute girls. I didn't have a complaint about the old sound, still no real complaint, but I do now hear a bit of digital fuzz sometimes. Not sure if it airflow\breathing, or mechanical scrapes. I did take time to rewatch over half to try to get a handle on it. Then again I do have dammaged hearing, so it could just be me, or my incredibly loud headphones. Bottom line from me if no one else is bothered, sweep it under the bench, as it is not bothersome unless I am listening for it.
