Hey Norm awesome set up..... what size is the Jon? Thanx Kevin.
@nwsw57643 жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin, it is an Alumacraft 1436, which means that it is 14 ft long, 36 in wide at the floor, and approx 54 in at the top of the side.

Would be very interested to know how what kind of obstacles this setup can drive over with X amount of weight in the boat. Do you think it could get over a levee boat ramp or drive straight over dry marsh?
@nwsw57644 жыл бұрын
Eli Anton Hi Eli, the boat will not power over dry marsh. I have driven in 1” of water over sand bars/mud and over reed thick over shallows. At speed I have slid over dry sand bars within the Red river. The engine puts out 48hp. You would need +120 hp to push you over dry grass.

So it won't go over just dry grass that's why I wanted to do it have water back yard and grass

Have you considered painting the bottom with a "slick" epoxy ?
@nwsw57643 жыл бұрын
No I have not. The bottom of the jon is very thin and flexes too much. Better option maybe would be to put acrylic plastic sheets to strengthen the bottom but The added weight and cost doesn’t justify the work. My intent was to make an inexpensive (affordable) airboat that works well over the swamp and shallow water which it does. Cost to build with off the shelf parts just under $9k. Which cruises at 18 all day at about 75% power. Try buying a comparable one for that price. This boat is fun and affordable.

Hi Norm. Do you feel the 36 in wide bottom on the boat is ok with your setup?
@nwsw57642 жыл бұрын
Hi David, For the engine size, yes. The engine will push the hull to a cruise of 18-19?mph. WOT is 20-21. Blessings, Norm

What did this cost if you don't mind me asking also how well does this push you around on grass and mud
@nwsw57644 жыл бұрын
Hi John, I purchased everything off the shelf. The boat from Academy at $800. The trailer from Academy for $600. The engine from Performance 670 for $2,800. The fan cage, controls, rudders, propeller, reduction drive for $3,800. Misc parts for $300. Labor mine. Total cost approximately $8,300. I could have saved thousands by making the fan cage and controls. But I wanted to save time so I purchased everything off the shelf. With a full load of two people plus misc supplies it runs 22mph. With just myself it will run 30 mph. It goes through reeds, over virtually no water with no issues. I have not run it over mud so that I don’t know. But for basic air boating it is a blast.

The engine and exhaust are stock. Had a Yamaha water silence (muffler)

Removed the water muffler and now it is exhausted directly thru the transom using exhaust scupper valve.

Oops, that is the 120 hp jet jon. The 48 hp Predator uses a stock Predator muffler with an extra exhaust port added.

What you got spent on this rig?

Cost about $8500 for all the components, boat, prop, prop reduction drive, prop cage, rudders, engine, controls, seats, wiring, etc. Bought almost all parts off the shelf at retail prices.

Is it important to have a shroud enclosure around prop.? Not talking cage but shrouding the cage.... Making a wind tunnel in more words
@nwsw57642 жыл бұрын
Hi Russ, That would be taking the build to another level. This is done in aviation to reduce drag and improve thrust. But it comes a huge cost and requires exact engineering to insure that the correct dihedral, pitch, angle, length, surface smoothness, etc., of the cowling to reduce drag and improve thrust. This is way beyond what I can engineer in my garage or afford. I build this just for fun and it is quite fun.

The engine was modified by Performance 670. It is definitely not stock. So far no issues. You can use the Vanguard 40 hp marine engine for a few more $$$$ if you don’t trust the Predator 670.
