144. Cutting tire beads from a rim

In this video, I show you how I was able to cut an auto tire off of a aluminum rim using a very inexpensive reciprocating saw (with a sharp blade). Once I figured out how best to do this, it takes about 30 seconds to cut the bead.
The big takeaway from this video is to never give up. If you are struggling to accomplish something, try a different approach or come up with a new idea to try. And most importantly, never give up. The other thing to keep in mind is to be safe while working. Whatever you are working on, it is not worth getting injured. SO BE CAREFUL!
In this video, I tried to describe the different ideas and approaches I tried while trying to figure out how best to remove a tire from the rim. Some attempts worked better than others and there were times when I considered giving up. But I guess I am just too stubborn to do that. So I kept going.

I find as I get older, I have less tolerance for loud noises. Whenever I am in my shop using a loud power tool like the BladeRunner or a shop vac, I wear these earmuffs. In this video, I used this hearing protection while using the reciprocating saw.

I was able to cut the cable without damaging the rim. I'm wondering why anyone would ever make tires like this, and what kind of machine it takes to get the tire on/off the rim. After cutting the main tire off through the sidewalls, I cut one cable off with a "sonic" oscillating multi-tool with a small metal blade, and the other with some hefty diagonal cutters. The oscillating multi-tool was easier, but extreme care must be taken not to damage the bead route. But man, what a pain it was compared to a regular tire. You're talking about 4 hours to replace a tire as compared to about 10 minutes.

Yes, I can relate to your story. I think the multitool you are referring to I also used in another video at the 5:15 mark; here's the link: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hs5_hKlyt9-bk2Q.htmlsi=0VvdFvWnH7LnhEKC . I'm guessing you have never seen a tire machine taking tires off and putting new ones on rims. You can see these machines in action at retail tire stores. These machines are very powerful. Replicating this kind of power using simple tools from home is definitely a challenge! I don't know for certain so I am guessing that once auto tires went tubeless, the steel wires were added (embedded) to the tire to produce an air tight seal between the tire and rim. In the end, using the reciprocating saw with a new, sharp blade on rims I intended to scrap is the fastest way to remove the tires and beads. For rims I don't want to damage, I pay the tire store to take old tires off and put new tires on. Thanks for your comment and for watching.

@@ImaginethenMake And thanks for the video. The only tires I've encountered so far with this steel cable are old ones. I have a couple more old snow tires on rims to remove of the same type. I hope to get the time to remove (without damaging rims) down from 4 hours to 1 hour. To me,1 hour of struggle is worth saving $20, especially if you learn something in the struggle.

I own a tire shop and from time to time a customer will bring in a wheel that only has the bead left because they have shredded the tire in a blowout. I have found it very challenging to break the bead from the wheel even with a brand new Coates tire changer. I need to find a way to remove bead without doing further damage to the wheel. Granted most of the ones I see are usually trailer tires/wheels but in order to reuse the wheel I can’t cut it like that. If you come up with a good ideal to do this please share in a future vid. Thanks

Hi Brad. I agree, this is a tough problem to solve. If I were in your shoes, I would contact Coates and see if they can recommend a procedure you can use with your machine. Maybe there is an accessory that you can add? I guess I am thinking that they have likely had this question before and would know what works and what doesn't. If they are unable to help, you could talk to other vendors of tire machines and see what they say. If you are still stuck, but need to get a solution worked out, you might have to come up with your own DIY solution. I hope this helps. Thanks for your comment and for watching.

@@ImaginethenMake If it's just a regular tire without a cable around the bead, I would use a hot blade, and just don't breath the smoldering rubber as you cut through. If there's a cable around the bead, the best I've found is very hefty diagonal cutters, but be careful (wear eye gear) because when it breaks it can snap back at you.

I used a 4.5" angle grinder with a cutting disc. Just do small increment touches with the disc and in about a minute it's cuts the steel band.

In January 2022, my scrapyard pays $0.25 per pound for "dirty aluminum rims". The 2 rims weighed about 57lbs. so I was paid a meager $14. It probably does not sound like very much considering the effort required and I would agree with that. However, if I was to do it again, I think I would be able to get the rims to the scrapyard much faster. Thanks for your question and for watching.

its 10 times easier if you break the bead using the 4x4 + vehicle method before you cut the tire
