Cutting an Auto Tire off a Rim
One of my neighbors threw away an auto tire mounted on a steel rim. At first, I thought the tire on the rim would make a good, wide, solid base for some kind of a stand in the shop. Then I had second thoughts. Every square inch of floor space in the shop is precious so when I looked at the tire lying flat on the floor, I thought it just took up too much floor space. So I decided to remove the tire from the rim. This video shows how I did that.
As always, please feel free to leave comments or questions. Thanks for watching!

Look guys: break the bead (both sides); cut the sidewalls. Remove the tire. Then, pry off the remanding beads. You can remove four tires in about 30 minutes this way. To break the bead, use two small bottle jacks or scissor jacks braced against a solid surface.

Thanks for your comment. I actually have a history of trying to remove auto tires from rims. The video you watched was my 1st attempt where I settled for just cutting off the tire and leaving the bead behind. In my 2nd attempt here, kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gZ6lfMamtq6zqX0.html , I did manage to break the bead using a floor jack, but it was a lot of physical work. In my 3rd attempt here, kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hs5_hKlyt9-bk2Q.html , I did manage to cut through the bead and remove it. Even though the 3rd video shows the amount of work I put into removing the tire, most of the work was figuring out how to do it (figuring out which simple tools work best). The key that time around was in using the oscillating multi-tool. Once I understood how best to use this tool on the tire, it really was not that bad. I have one more rim to do and then I'll be off to the scrapyard. As I tried to describe in the 3rd video, I'm motivated by first trying to lessen what goes into the landfill and 2nd by making a few extra dollars. The extra bucks are good but not the main purpose. Thanks again for your comment and for watching.

Thank you for making this video! I had four large inner tube type truck tires mounted on old split rims ("widowmaker rims"). No scrap yard would take the rims with tires mounted, no tire shop would remove the tires as it is actually illegal for them to work on these old and dangerous rims. I was stuck with them until I saw this video. Once I cut the tires off I was able to bring them to be disposed of at the tire shop (for free!) and was also able to bring the steel rims to the metal scrapper to get paid by the pound for them!

Set the tire behind any car with a tow bar receiver. Stick the tire down first, a scissor jack on the inner edge of the tire and push / lift against the tow bar receiver. 1 minute or less to break a bead. Flip the tire over and do it again.

I took a knife, cut around the sidewalls and removed the entire tread. Then carefully used a dremel with a small cutoff wheel to cut through the wire in the bead on the front and back and that took no time at all. Stop cutting the tire bead as soon as the sparks stop flying because that means you're into the rubber under the bead, and you will hit the rim if you don't stop. You'll hear creaking and then a snap as soon as the bead breaks and you should be able to get the bead off by hand or with a sharp knife

This video shows my 1st attempt at removing a tire from a rim. I have since tried 3 more times using different techniques. This link: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hs5_hKlyt9-bk2Q.html goes to my most recent attempt. So far, I have learned that the challenge to removing the tire is exposing and then cutting the metal wires embedded in the tire's bead. In the linked video, I used a oscillating multi-tool, diagonal cutters, and a bolt cutter. Other viewers have commented that they have had success cutting the bead wires by using a Dremel tool with small cutoff disk installed. The other thing I can say for certain is that removing car tires from rims using DIY/cheap tools is definitely challenging! Thanks for your comment and for watching.

Just a follow up to a reply I made earlier. Used this video as sort of inspiration to try to get my impossibly tough hay wagon implement tire off the rim. I tried everything I could around here to try and pop the bead. I had another split rim that slid over this rim, lots of lube, and used my 70HP tractor with front end loader putting pressure on it..NADA. Since it was a fairly thick tire I did use the sawzall to cut around the rim. Then used a 4" angle grinder to cut a V into the back side to reveal the wire bead, just enough so I could get a dremel tool in there with a reinforced cutting wheel. It took a bit to get through, but you can see the wire bead in there as you cut, and once you get through the last wire, the remaining bead just pops loose. No more struggling with stubborn tire beads. This is my method.
@ImaginethenMake

I feel your frustration. The video you watched is fairly old. I have since tried 3 more times (and made a video each time) to remove a tire from a rim. My most recent attempt is shown here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hs5_hKlyt9-bk2Q.html . In the video, I use a oscillating multitool to cut away slivers of the tire and then use diagonal cutters to cut the wires in the bead. Just as you said, once the last wire is cut, the bead comes right off. This is now my preferred method. If you do this carefully, I think the rim could be reused. Thanks for your comment and for watching.

If you don’t have a saw strong enough to cut through the bead then this method was a failure to begin with. Best method without tools is literally a long 2by4, place it closest to the tire bead drive on it the weight of the car breaks it instantly and if not then it will have at least started the process for u to break the bead.
