This is a screen capture on a Transas simulator at Cal Maritime of a 14k teu container vessel inbound to Long Beach, CA Inner Harbor . Jacobsen Pilots and the Port of Long Beach participated in a one day study to determine the feasibility of bringing the largest ship to ever come to a West Coast port into the Inner Harbor. The study determined the dredging requirements in the Back Channel and the amount of cut back to the northeast corner of Terminal Island. The video runs at 8 times realtime except when viewing from the sides or dead astern. The actual transit speeds are starting at about 6 kts and reducing to 2.5 kts in the narrow channel. The bridge depicted is an artist conception of the new bridge slated for completion in 2016 or later.
