11 жыл бұрынThis is a screen capture on a Transas simulator at Cal Maritime of a 14k teu container vessel inbound to Long Beach, CA Inner Harbor . Jacobsen Pilots and the Port of Long Beach participated in a one day study to determine the feasibility of bringing the largest ship to ever come to a West Coast port into the Inner Harbor. The study determined the dredging requirements in the Back Channel and the amount of cut back to the northeast corner of Terminal Island. The video runs at 8 times realtime except when viewing from the sides or dead astern. The actual transit speeds are starting at about 6 kts and reducing to 2.5 kts in the narrow channel. The bridge depicted is an artist conception of the new bridge slated for completion in 2016 or later.

At the 3:19 mark did you have the bow boat pull and 45 off the hull for stern way and give it a little(10degrees or so) right rudder to stop it from drifting to starboard and stead up on the back channel?

My guess is that the tugs are on short lines and running off the hull and out of the flare. Even the starboard boat looks to be at a 45. What you described is a good way to get the ship to move a bit laterally while coming ahead. In your example ship would crab to port, assuming no wind or current. But what do I know, I’m just a jukebox repairman.

suecyde64 but yeah I was thinking as he makes that turn around LB121 there may be some lateral motion/drift to starboard...so with not a lot of turning room he pulls the port bow tug at a 45 off at an easy-1/3 amount with a little bit of right rudder to gently check the ship up and steady up on the sector light.

Nick Deuel Having reviewed the footage in full, I can conclude that you are reasonably close to the truth.

@@nickdeuel9663 Sorry to take so long to reply! There are some limitations in the simulator. The tugs will not lay alongside in order to protect the lines from chafing. You are correct with your assumptions. You may have noticed that the simulated prop is turning counterclockwise as in going astern. This was a glitch in the visual and has been corrected by Transas(now Wartsila).
