Jarrod, I want to say that "I can't thank you enough." I know this was an immense amount of work. It would be increasingly invaluable to release the full Zen Timings screen grab for each kit listed. There is *a little* amount of info out there as to what bits of the timings matter the most. However, you've just done the most comprehensive testing on this topic bar none. Rounding that out would be providing the said screen grabs. Let me know if you want any kickback for this cause I don't mind doing so, of which I'm on a discord server you're in. All in all, still: Thank you for this testing. I know it took you a fair amount of time to do this work, thank you.

For those who wanna get a 32GB memory configuration: I bought 2 sticks of 16GB Kingston 2Rx8, 3200Mhz, CL20, code "KF432S20IB1/16" for my Legion 5 Pro (Ryzen 7 5800H, RTX 3060), did no gaming benchmarks, but my AIDA64 speeds were: - Read: 46151 MB/s - Write: 45694 MB/s - Copy: 43409MB/s - Latency: 78.1 ns This is in line with the top 1-2 results from Jared, so I'm expecting peak performance in gaming with this kit.

Jarrod, extremely helpful! Just grabbed a Samsung 970 Evo Plus SSD for load speeds (FAST!) and looking at RAM now. There are so many complexities with picking the correct RAM especially with XMP playing a factor.. Many vendors simply do not list it and you have to be careful in what you're buying or you won't get the advertised speeds, especially on the AMD Ryzen laptops like the Legion. Looking at the Kingston Fury Impact 32GB kit with 3200MHz and 20 CAS latency as a possibility myself. Cheers!

My go to guy for smart comparisons. Very indepth and clear explanation and comparisons. Much appreciated ! Those 10-20% overall gains (subjective to usage circumstances) are what you would expect jumping from say a rtx 3070 to 3080. Why bother when you can get almost similar gains by smaller smarter upgrades in ram and cooling, instead of the more expensive GPUs.

Yeah you could potentially somewhat upgrade a 3060 laptop to a low wattage 3070 laptop with stock crappy ram levels, for about 100 dollars instead of paying at least a 250/300 premium. Although the 6gb of VRAM will be a bigger unavoidable bottleneck in 2/3 years.

Will 32GB DC DDR4 3200 CL22 (16GB 2Rx8 + 16GB 2Rx8) out perform the 16GB DC DDR4 3200 CL22 (8GB 2Rx8 + 8GB 2Rx8)?

It’s interesting that the 8+8 dual rank dual channel ram sticks is performing basically the best. Why is it that higher memory may perform worse in other games? When you have more memory, does the system assign more memory to a programme since it’s not lacking memory at all? I clearly don’t know enough about ram
@metradawn8071
@metradawn8071 2 жыл бұрын
Sub timings. Higher capacity leads to looser sub timings, but it's negligible in terms of performance. Nothing to worry about as long as you run 2 sticks to max out the bandwidth, you're good to go.

Which ram are you going with ? I feel like this video somewhat contradicted previous much talked about findings over the last 5 months of ‘single rank v dual rank’ with some single rank being faster than dual rank ? 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@assasins353 by quite a lot. Not that I used the original sticks long, but the performance when I play the first section of the witcher 3 is significant, like ~+20fps from 70-80 to ~100, max settings, on 1600p resolution

Is there an explanation for why the memory latency increase with better memory? It seems counter intuitive
@Invertedzero
@Invertedzero Жыл бұрын
Yeah I upgraded to 64GB but seem to have slightly worse latency using a few different benchmarking tools. I assumed it was a minor consequence of having such a large amount of memory, but I can see the equivalent best performing 16GB also has the highest latency...

Sadly, there wasn't any Dual-Rank 32GB kits in this video. There is actually a noticeable improvement from the Single-Rank 32GB. Enough that it would be scoring at the top or even top two.

Hopefully this silences the ram elitists a bit, lol. Honestly it gets even more complicated than this though. Because 1440p is typically more GPU-bound, ram swapping seems to grant even smaller gains, if any.

Yeah there's a LOT more you could go into, but after 3 weeks of full time hours worth of work (15 days testing, 5 days per week) you've got to call it at some point!

Even at 1440p, there are still games that benefit from having better RAM like racing sims and fast-paced shooters to name a few. Having faster RAM will also affect your 1% lows which highly affects how smooth or stuttery your gameplay would be. It isn't all about avg. framerates all the time.
@JoshCravesTech
@JoshCravesTech 2 жыл бұрын
@@coolerdan446 I mean sure, but say you have 16gb of 1rx8 ram and you spend $200 or so on 32gb of 2rx8 ram. Is it really worth all that for possibly a small amount of 1% low improvement in some games? I guess if you’re a big time performance chaser then sure, but to me that doesn’t really make sense.
@coolerdan446
@coolerdan446 2 жыл бұрын
@@JoshCravesTech It just really depends on the games you play. I wouldn't really recommend it if you play mostly open-world or single player type games. But if you play very competitively like the type of games I mentioned previously and need the smoothest, most responsive, and least stuttery gameplay, then you'll need that upgrade. You can actually get a Crucial Dual-Rank 32GB for around $144 on Amazon. Then you can sell your 16GB stock in the used market for about $80-$90. Then your total upgrade only costs $50-$60.

I would love it if you started including Forza in your tests. Really, doing both Horizon 4 and 5, would be great. My OMEN 15 (10750H, 3070, 32gb 2933 cl17 2Rx8) runs Horizon 4 cranked fully at around 130-150 fps, yet FH5 I have on Ultra Textures but high for everything else, and I can get 100fps. Yet, I have it capped at 75 to reduce studder in dense areas. But I just feel those games would help many more people gauge their purchase options. They are 2 of the most popular games on Xbox Game Pass, in the US anyway. I am interested in getting something a bit better myself and I'd love those to compare. I would really like this same laptop, but with a 11800h and 130 watt 3070. I have a 300hz screen and haven't found one with the 11th gen yet. The OMEN desktops...... I would not recommend those. Update! I found the 11800h with the 300hz screen!!! Finally! too bad its still a 100watt GPU...

This is the reason to avoid Asus and Dell/Alienware’s most laptops due to their embedded memory practices not only harm your future upgradability, but also they choose the lowest components: 1Rx16 to embedded, totally irresponsible.
