Design must take RISKS within a marketing context. Design for marketing is meant to STAND OUT (be noticed). To follow a trend is to DISAPPEAR into the crowd, potentially. Yes, it's good to be aware of current trends, but the purpose of being aware is to AVOID them in most cases.
@PhilipVanDusen
@PhilipVanDusen 5 жыл бұрын
Most companies are massively risk-adverse and having the security blanket of having an established and visible trend to add comfort to the decision to try something "new" is what many companies need to even reach out of their safe little boxes. But I get your point.

It's always a thing what information you want to sell. I think one of the major problems on web content is still a matter of performance in all kind of browsers. "Moto Logos" and "Moving Mail" are phenomena of our time and will disappear like when they started in Netscape/Office 95 with the animated office helper and all the other tries to establish animations. The killer was always the performance and a new trend is the boring aspect of it. After you saw it once, you get "pissed off" when you see it all the times. The user wants the information they looking for so fast as possible. Every event-driven animation takes the users time and generates a bad vibe. Not good, if you want to sell something. The rest of your example are trends and depends on the taste of the user, brand or product. But a nice overview of trends, thank you for the work and your presentation.
@PhilipVanDusen
@PhilipVanDusen 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Andy, Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I appreciate your sharing your POV. I'd disagree with you on animated design (logos, mail, gifs). With the increase in bandwidth (and coming soon, 5G) and the explosion of video on just about every platform, LinkedIn is even adding video "stories" like Instagram soon, video and animation are not going away any time soon - no matter how annoying you think they are. And let me tell you, I HATE gifs - to me gifs are like a visual skipping record (you have to be old enough to know what a skipping record sounds like) They are visually super-annoying in how they repeat incessantly. But that's just me - gifs aren't going away - no matter how much they p*ss me off...LOL.

Anil, so true. Some people expect trends to be the newest thing - but in reality they are currently POPULAR things - whether they have been around a short or a long time. I mean look at Russian Constructivism - it's been around 100 years! . Trends are actually about looking BACKWARD not forward. Thanks for the insightful comment.
@triffnix

trends that still annoy me a lot (even though they may not be limited to graphic design) are having large "life-is-good" or motivational statements printed on stuff, massive use of pastel colors and having large symbols on things (mostly product design). I want stuff that does NOT convey any message and that does NOT show which groups/movements/lifestyles etc. I follow.

People are desperate to communicate, but feel "above" communication. So the mind small talks while the "deep philosophical exchanges" take place on products. example: MAGA hat parents at the pee-wee football game, highly sexualized young girls with Marilyn Monroe t shirts
@triffnix
@triffnix 5 жыл бұрын
@@losgryfog Maybe my tendency towards actually talking with people about such "deep philosophical" topics (I study philosophy by the way) explains why the trend upsets me. Another point to my view is, that most of my opinions are unstable and might change in the near future, so keeping "solid" statements around wont do good to me

Very great video! Love your content. I feel as if you missed out on a rather big trend though, that being post-modernism. A lot of designers on instagram have started following this chaotic/rave/acid PO-MO trend, kinda following the David Rudnick style. What are your opinions on this trend overall? I have a feeling that the experimentality of the 90's is coming back, with a somewhat dada + dark/edgy feeling (if that makes any sense)
@PhilipVanDusen
@PhilipVanDusen 5 жыл бұрын
Po-Mo has been going on for 4-5 years or so. I thought the neo geo pattern variation of it was a little more interesting and I have to say I am colored a little bit by the fact that I dont' particularly like PoMo or really want to propagate it. I know, not particularly objective, but what can I say...

@jigglestumps But not really! Here in everyday life you hardly see such special designs, except on the Internet, KZfaq, and so on, or pages of designers. When I go to the small town here, I always see the same boring billboards where you think you can do the same with Photoshop or any other graphics program. The brochures that come every day always have the same design. Also the free newspapers. And it will also matter which products you are looking for. Not every product has a fancy trendy packaging design. The rest will be done by the ad blocker. Of course, I will keep my eyes open ;-)

Thanks Zacchaeus! But I wouldn't frame it as "positive or negative" they are dualities of usage. Neither one is "good" or "bad". They just mean different things depending on the context and intention. And those two dualities, I wouldn't say, sum up the entire video, but only a small fraction of it, wouldn't you agree? I only need 30 more credits to finish a graphic design course but I only ever know how to do the basics of the Adobe softwares for design. I don’t know much about typography, shapes, and prob mid level understanding of color. To become a professional designer, is it advisable to follow trends and learn from it or should I start from the bottom? How do you I know I’ve reached the level of a pro? I want to be great at it but my lack of knowledge in the design field despite taking classes for years is really discouraging and instead of learning more, I’m not doing anything about it. I feel like I’m already at the end of the line and it’s gonna be much harder to catch up.

being a beginner is OK. Don't beat yourself up. Go out and get a intro-level job with the skills you have. The best way to improve is to work. No one enters the industry as a "pro". Trends are good to know about and recognize but I never recommend people "follow" them or copy them. use them as inspiration and take it somewhere new!

Read a lot. Read foundations, read basic, look into graphic design history. Adobe programs are just tools, the real value you'll add to any job position will be your knowledge an experience, and that can be applied through any tools you're proficient with. But like Philip said, work. The best things I've ever learned, I've learned on jobs both big and small. When I was in my 20s I took a lot of small, shitty projects and jobs, but little by little I build my experience and now in my 30s I have a job I'm super happy with. We all go through that, just plug along and you'll get the skills you need to be successful.

I've worked in London as a designer for a lot of years, so have most of my friends. I don't know anyone who reads about design, keeps an eye on trends or even thinks about whether they are a professional or not. All of my friends work in the tops design agencies in the world (JKR, Turner Duckworth, Saatchi, Pentagram, Superunion, Design bridge, Supple, Someone, Pearl fisher etc) and none of them even think about the stuf you're being advised to do. Basically you just need to get into a job after you leave uni. Find a placement or an internship and learn from your peers. Work hard and ignore all of the history and style guides of the graphic design/fashion industry. You will find your way.

This is the first video I've seen of yours, and while I enjoyed the video, I think it is mis-titled. Except for #12 Moving Mail, these trends have been going on for a years, so they are certainly not the "Graphic Design Trends for 2019". As for "Mary Jane" , it may be a product or client trend, but the examples shown didn't exemplify any kind of new "design trend". This is a constructive comment. I watched it with expectations of learning something new. I didn't. I found myself recounting the numerous time in previous years I saw the exampled trends, so came away with enjoying some nice examples of design, and the feeling you were not really current and maybe I should spend my time elsewhere.

I was in the fashion industry for 15 years and travelled the globe shopping for trend 3x a year, Tokyo, London, Milan, Berlin etc as a VP of Design and Trend. Trend hunting was my job. I’ve worked with major trend houses like WGSN, Stylus, JWT, Pantone. The one thing I’ve learned is that trends are never limited to specific periods of time and are very fluid in how they appear. Trends are revisited, altered, revised - new perspectives are added - they disappear and then they come back over and over (particularly in the fashion industry) (Russian Constructivism - 100 years old - never really goes away). Some trends take a few years to grab hold and become recognizable as popular. So people like you, who may see and recognize trends early - may be mentally registering them way before other people so they may seem older to you - but not others. Too many folks who have no formal training in art/design history they are totally new. I can never assume the knowledge base of my audience. Anyway I hope you were somehow inspired.

And IMO learn what is BAD design, even if it is trendy and used by industry 'leaders'.. ie apple's choice of minimal contrast on many products, where gray lettering is a mere step away from background white, is a whole lot like an ashtray on a motorbike. The purpose of the design 'to be read' is a joke to many sight challenged people. Contrast is REQUIRED to read text. The same nonsense occurs when small black type is used on darker colours, happens everywhere. So trendy it may be, but pointless as a communication medium when half the population can't read it without resorting to magnifying glasses!

We have a hard time finding good young designers with motion capabilities. You'd think it would be the opposite. Every book I look at is static. Motion is everything nowadays. Not sure why college is not forcing GD majors into any motion fundamentals. When I was in college you had to take web 1, which involved Flash. That was the launchpad to the creative hybrids who can design anything, and switch gears and do some tricked out motion and interactive. Now the only kids studying motion design are video or animation majors who do not have the fundamental graphic design chops. Ideally, I want a designer who can do everything. Illustration, type, layout, front end web design, proficiency with AfterEffects and Premiere. Kids these days learn minimal illustrator and they have a degree. And the Mac's are getting worse and more dumb user friendly since everyone in the world is now a self taught graphic designer.

@@sushimamba4281 That's not what I'm saying. Of course recent grads can't have ALL those skills or practice them at a professional level right out of school. What I am saying is that design schools are out of touch with what skills students should have a foundation in coming into the workforce - and many times they do not prepare them adequately. I know, I've hired probably 300 recent grads into freelance and full-time positions in my career, as well as serving on the portfolio review board of an accredited design college - and seeing 1st hand the skills students graduate with.

Yes while it takes a career to be seasoned and proficient in all areas of design. Educators should provide a more broader spectrum of what is being taught in traditional graphic design. Technical skills should always be attained over and over as the times change. Yes you learn a lot on the job as you grown into new avenues. But I’m seeing a lot of young designers who have been told they don’t have to open up photoshop anymore. When they have to do a website they do it in InDesign. There has been no exposure to anything interactive. There needs to be an introduction to all software, motion, UX, an interactive. Would if a student doesn’t know what he’s good at? He could be a fabulous motion designer. But goes and gets a 4 year degree that hones in on print and packaging design as opposed to interactive digital work, and he never knew he could have been good at that cause he was never introduced to it formally. I’m glad I had a great well rounded degree in graphic design. It introduced me to things I loved. And I’m still doing them 15 years later.

Having worked in design at a major footwear company who's HQ is in Beaverton, I was a little skeptical of a youtube video on design trends when watching the 2018 report.- I was wrong. Actually, most of his predictions were spot on. Especially the "glitch" trend. In my opinion that seemed so niche and specific I did not see how it could be a real trend. Then all year I saw so many brands adopt the glitch style across advertising and social media. He totally called it. Excellent, which is why I came back this year to see what was in the report. Very concise and well edited. Great job including historical references for each style/trend too. Refreshing, because sometimes when you work in a corporation or agency- everyone sees the same trend reports and has the same WGSN subscriptions, which usually causes any seasonal design presentations to all look the same across the entire organization. it is awesome that this channel is available as another resource for professional designers.
