I would not think this as a movement or a trend, but more like an option of the knowledge from all of time. The reason a trend dies is because they are overused but that can we avoid if we have so many different options. The trend to day has another volume than the 80’ word for trend. Design should not be choosen by a cliché, but with a twist so that the design speak for it self. Subscribed!

Hi, Thanks for the knowledge I appricate it very much!! I just found your channel and I'm now going to binge watch your other video's. I very new to graphic design, just about 4 months now, and I'm self taught, started with a free program called Gimp actually I'm actually still using it, I'm learning new things every single day, I will eventually use photoshop and illustrator when I can master Gimp. The only reason I got into graphic design was to design T-shirts for Amazon and a few other "On Demand" t-shirt printing websites. But now I really Love it, the wheels in my head start turning Everytime I see a great design now and I pay way more attention to random designs I see on the street, it may seem weird but somtimes I can go to sleep because I'm thinking about designs. I glad to have found you KZfaq channel, it's good to provide me with great information because I have some catching up to do and it's alot harder to learn things when your 54 years old as opposed to 24 years old. Take care and keep up the great work and the great videos. Hawk out!!

Claudia, I'm so psyched you found me and that you are embarking on such a rewarding new journey at 54. I was a fine art teacher until I was 33 and only started in design then. And I started in the T-shirt industry. I started my own company and after a few other jobs I eventually became the VP of Graphics at Old Navy - who had a $700 million dollar/yr graphic T-shirt business. I used to dream about T-shirt designs! They still hold a very special place in my heart. Go to my website and look at the fashion category to see some of it. Good luck. You've made a great decision.

@PhilipVanDusen
@PhilipVanDusen 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Ryan, Some are, some not so much. Trends are revisited, altered, revised - new perspectives are added - they disappear and then they come back over and over (particularly in the fashion industry) (Constructivism - around for 100 years - never really goes away). Some trends take a few years to grab hold and become recognizable as popular. So people like you, who may see and recognize trends early and easily - may be mentally registering them way before other people so they may seem older to you - but not others. To many folks who have no formal training in art/design history they are totally new. I can never assume the knowledge base of my audience. Anyway I hope you were somehow inspired.

Thanks Dan! I think if you did a "take" on the Playbill design trend that could be a very cool format for your thumbnails. Remember, your text has to be BIG and have a lot of contrast. Most people will be seeing your thumbnails on mobile (maybe 3/4" wide or smaller) and they are reproduced very tiny. This is where most KZfaqrs screw up. Legibility is KEY.

Stephen, Thanks - I'm happy you think so. "Trends" are really about the past more than the future - they represent a style or technique that has gained frequent enough usage that it is recognizable as a movement of sorts. Lots of people get all bent that they have seen these before, that they feel "old". But what is a "trend" is not a crystal ball. They're about inspiration and to spur ideas about where you are going to take your work next. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

idk about you but I feel some of these are a tad too overused (playbill and glitches especially!) Then again, if they aren't even a bit overused then they wouldn't be trends :P All that said, thanks for compiling a list of tools and techniques for inspiration. It really gets the creative juices flowing

Nicolle, you're exactly right about the "trends" being overused. Thats how they are recognized as trends. I'm glad it helped your creativity and is acting as the inspiration it is intended to be. Great! Now we know what we shouldn't make in 2018! In my opinion, a designer should always stay away from trends. Besides that, I believe that when building a brand you should try to become timeless and thus trendless as well.
@PhilipVanDusen
@PhilipVanDusen 6 жыл бұрын
Paul, Thanks for watching. I always look at trend as inspiration, not as something to copy. Techniques, new ways of looking at problems, the evolution of design, how to energize your creative spirit. However, timelessness is a pipe dream IMHO. There isn't a design created in history that doesn't have the mark of some sort of historical or cultural context that places it on the human timeline. The work in the Logo Books you review on your channel - all reflect some sort of historical context whether it be in the font, illustration style, and in most cases, trend of the times in which they were created. Cheers!
@LogoBooks
@LogoBooks 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Philip, not sure where you found "Paul" as being my name (perhaps from my first video). My name is Christophe, but no worries about that! Trends are indeed interesting to learn new things etc. as you said. Mashing that up to create something of your own is something we should all try. I really liked the video because you showed a lot of different examples. Time is indeed something that always comes together with... well, everything. Although everything has a certain timestamp, I believe that some logos (let's take logos as example) are designed to be timeless. It could have been a certain style/trend when it was created, but timelessness transcends trends in my opinion. Of course, when you design something, it's hard to tell it will stand the test of time but I think it's something designers should always aim for.
@PhilipVanDusen
@PhilipVanDusen 6 жыл бұрын
Sorry Christophe! I was moving too fast. I saw the name of the "author" on your first video description as Paul - but that was the author of the book you were reviewing! Doh! So Christophe it is. I agree designers should always shoot for timelessness as a goal. But as you observed everything inevitably gets a time-stamp in some way. The Apple logo, the Coke logo, Starbucks, Pepsi - all "timeless" logos that have been revised dozens of times and each time they are revised you realize how time-stamped the previous versions are! --Keep up the good work and reviews. They're awesome.
@LogoBooks
@LogoBooks 6 жыл бұрын
Philip VanDusen No worries! Would have been great if I was the man who designed the logos and the book itself though! And indeed, as you say. Even the biggest brands revise their logos. Sometimes it's due to an outdated look, but sometimes it's also a forced changement (small icons for small screens). The world of logos will always be fascinating to me. That's why I also have this channel. Thank you for your kind words about what I do!
@PhilipVanDusen

Christophe, You're a young dude. One day you CAN be that guy who designed those logos and that book. Go for it. There are no limits in what you can do or accomplish. You have the passion for it and that shows. Make it happen.

Most of these are timeless concepts and are to be found over the last decades. Which are the _true_ trends of 2018 now?

Stephan, "Trends" are really a misnomer and are actually about the past in a lot of ways - a style or technique that has gained frequent enough usage that it is recognizable as a movement of sorts. I realize you may have have seen these before, and I don't doubt that - and that they feel "old". But what is a "trend" is not necessarily a crystal ball - I wish I had one. Very good presentation! But if that is how advertisers are going to try and market their stuff to me, I'll be saving a lot of money this year. I like: integration Font as illustration Systematic color But most of the rest made me feel like I was either taking a 1970's acid trip or hanging out in 1960's Berlin during the cold war as the wall went up. Perhaps it is just me, but I found most of those styles very unappealing. But then again, I am 58 years old and have never really been a trendsetter myself...LOL

good job Philip, it is worth mentioning that all "trends" are actually nothing new, just mixture of some twenties, sixties seventies etc. refreshed, reconfigured, filtered through contemporary perception and technology. However, no significant breakthroughs matching lets say constructivism. Btw Im curious what is your point of view on logo design, there seems to be some "trendy" tendencies: colour, form, typography, animation-ability etc
@PhilipVanDusen
@PhilipVanDusen 6 жыл бұрын
Tommy, You're totally right. Just like music and fashion, everything seems to be a bit of a remix or redux in a way. What's old is new again. I like your perspective that the older styles are "new" in being seen through a lens of contemporary technology. Thanks for the logo trend video idea. I've held off because logo trends are even more subtle I think. If you have any ideas email me through my website I'd love to see what you're seeing. Ivan, The thing about what are generally called "trends" is that they don't really qualify as a "trend" until they show enough mass usage to be classified as such - and this can sometimes take years. Some people expect trends to be the newest thing - but in reality they are currently POPULAR things - whether they have been around a short or a long time. I mean look at Russian Constructivism - it's been around 100 years! Trends are actually about looking BACKWARD not forward. What I suggest people do with trends is use them for inspiration, not for copying. I hope it was a little inspiring anyway!

@PhilipVanDusen
@PhilipVanDusen 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'm no fortune teller either. Lots of people don't realize that trend is not about the future, it's a re-look at the past. Nothing can be considered really a "trend" until it has gained a significant enough presence in the market that you are seeing a lot of it. I'm just trying to share a little inspiration with people. People like you who know the market and are up on what's happening see "trends" very early, so by the time they really get bigger and more visible - they seem ancient. But a lot of my viewers are very early in their careers (like just starting school) and don't know how to recognize them in the least.

Great video, but not fair to say these are 2018 trends. Rather, examples of styles which have risen and fallen over the past 20+ years. All great styles, no doubt, but none particularly unique to 2018. Examples presented would be considered 'timeless' design - the best designs of all. As far as 2018 trends, we'll see more flat, more minimalist and more gradients. 2019, all will be replaced with shiny emoijis - including the copy.

I see www.dribbble.com as a good metric of current trends as well as emerging styles. When I say 'more flat...minimalist...gradients', these are the styles most commented upon and highly upvoted by other community members (designers). No doubt, we should all cast a much wider net than a single website for all things 'current trend/style' - but I've found the dribbble community to be leading-edge without being bleeding-edge.

An awesome presentation. I'm just making the smart guy similar comment that 'Everything is art, and nothing is art'. A bit like gathering 6 Fashion Designers in the one room and asking them to show your their storyboard color swatches for the following season. By the time you've looked through the 6 storyboards, you've come to the conclusion that by these Designers, as a whole, all colors are in for next season and nothing has been left off! (so in reality, there aren't any 'rested' colours) It's all perception...then come the sheep! LOL Cheers

Sanj, I was in the fashion industry for 15 years and travelled the globe shopping for trend 3x a year, Tokyo, London, Milan, Berlin etc. Trend hunting was my job. The one thing I learned is that trends are never limited to specific periods of time and are very fluid in how they appear. Trends are revisited, altered, revised - new perspectives are added - they disappear and then they come back (deconstructivism - never really goes away). Seeing how 2018 just started, all of these trends are things that were published in 2017 and before. Some trends take a few years to grab hold and become recognizable as popular. So people like you, who may see and recognize trends early - may be mentally registering them way before other people so they may seem older to you - but not others. Anyway I hope you liked it more than being annoyed.
@souljahsstory
@souljahsstory 6 жыл бұрын
That's a really valid point. Was speaking to a colleague earlier today and the question that I always have bugging me in the back of my mind is always "Is this inspired by current trends and how do we avoid that pitfall of things looking and feeling tired by the time the project is done?" But the truth of it is that as a designer you pay attention to so many things in such a short space of time that it might feel like it's been done to death and been around for years. Wasn't annoyed just confused. But appreciate the effort and time it took you to make it.
@PhilipVanDusen
@PhilipVanDusen 6 жыл бұрын
My answer to the pitfall question has always been: (as it was in fashion where things are REALLY rehashed often) "what is our unique take on it?" "How do we make it own?" Glad you liked it Sanj - I need more subscribers like you.

Some people expect trends to be the newest thing - but in reality they are currently POPULAR things - whether they have been around a short or a long time. I mean look at Russian Constructivism - it's been around 100 years! . Trends are actually about looking BACKWARD not forward. What I suggest people do with trends is use them for inspiration, not for copying. Thanks for the comment!

He's just pointing out trends the he is noticing. And trends like this are real and noticeable, whether deliberately followed or not by "the graphic world" (whatever that is).

emiN, Thanks - that's my goal - not to waste anyones time - give some great value and get it done fast. All my videos are 3-8 minutes and I cram a ton of info into each one. Very little idle chit chat. There are too many people blabbing out there and saying nothing.
