Sooo Barry had 5 minutes of prep time and came up with a decent dish as planned, while Jamie had 20ish minutes to think, then managed to offend yet another nation with a completly unplanned 3-minutes pasta dish. Exactly what I hoped for, thank you, guys!

(64) Holy crud, Jaime just suffered the most extended bout of brain freeze I've ever seen. He just kept leaping from one disaster into another. Barry, on the other hand seems to have conquered his initial panic reaction and just got on with crafting a reasonable dish.

This is a fine (rare!) example where you can see that Barry deserves that sous-chef apron.

Barry showed why he earned the Sous Chef apron. He showed restraint when he was unfamiliar with ingredients and let flavors balance. Jamie tried to speed through and ended up really struggling with a generally simple chef skill. And it's not even one new to him as an excuse. It really proves high concept doesn't matter when you can't be consistent with the execution

Turnip tops (we call them turnip greens) are a staple food in the southern US. The flavor is stronger than spinach but milder than collard greens. You can buy them canned but fresh turnip greens, slow cooked with ham or bacon and the diced turnip roots, is a traditional dish served with black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day. Here is a new challenge. 1 Chef + 1 Normal vs 1 Chef and 1 Normal. They wear an oversized large t-shirt between 2, which allows only 1 arm of each out, and they have to cook off. I would also recommend that the Chefs use their least dominant arms out for the battle. Winner

Jamie says 10 mins as if ben has not, time and again, saved their pass it on dishes in less than that, with the added bonus of having half-cooked unknown elements and a messy kitchen waiting for him when he arrives 😂

I would love to see a challenege where each normal brings three tins from home. They keep one of them and then have to pick one from each of the other guys . Basically swapping cans between themself. So they would end up with 1 known and 2 mystery tins/cans and have to make a dish in 30 minutes with them. Gives each of them a chance to screw each other over.

YES! Unplanned battles mean chaos and i love chaos! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

So, what Jamie did was: "Go for the things I'm familiar with, no matter how I can sensibly combine them, or what the other person could do with the rest"; Barry's combo has so much more potential than bacon, eggs and wild garlic. Make the turnip tops into a kind of spinach-y braised leaf thing, give the mackerel a quick hot fry for colour (without overcooking it), make the cherries into a nice sauce, maybe thickened with some Bisto (my idea before watching what the lads do with their ingredients)... Honestly, Jamie pretty much fucked up by acting on impulse, and thus unconsciously leaving the objectively better ingredient combination to Barry. Edit: After watching, yeah, Barry easily won. Jamie had no plan, he just went for his classic "flavour bomb" combo, which only works if you have a plan (if you do, hell, does it work), but he didn't have a plan, so he panicked. Meanwhile, Barry was forced to think about his ingredients, and thus he HAD to make some kind of plan (be it ever so quick), and he came up with something that actually sounds pretty damn good.

In the southern USA, those are called "turnip greens" and they're fairly common.
