Starting with the hand gesture of the pinched fingers, so many people around the world are quite familiar with Italian body language but do they actually have the slightest clue of the meaning of the most common Italian hand gestures? It seems like they come in handy when mocking Italians is the goal but what about using them to speak Italian without knowing the Italian language?
Using hand gestures in the language was already a thing in ancient Rome, so it's deeply rooted. However, it's probably after the fall of the Western Roman Empire that the aid of the hands in the language became essential. Immigrants and colonizers arrived from everywhere: Carolingians, Normans, Saracens, Visigoths, German tribes, Austrians, French, etc. All of a sudden the local language was not dominant anymore and resorting to the use of the hands became very practical.
According to a study, Italians use around 250 hand gestures in everyday conversation. While most Italians don't even realize how much they depend on them, for a foreigner it could be quite useful to learn at least the basic ones to communicate with locals.
It's important to understand that the Italian culture is very vast and there are Italians who emigrated all over the world. Also, because Italy was fragmented in small kingdoms for many centuries, sometimes not only the spoken dialects are completely different languages but also the meaning of certain gestures could vary, slightly or even substantially. For instance, some Italian Americans use a gesture that in their interpretation is very rude and shows anger while the same gesture in most of Italy, especially Southern, is used to simply say "I don't care, whatever...". And what about the "rock on!" sign? Did you know you could actually get in trouble in Italy by using that very sign that in so many countries would pump you up at a rock concert?
So it's important to know the meaning of the Italian hand gestures but it's also essential to know which hand gestures to avoid because they're considered rude and offensive in Italy or by Italians.
