Baobab Trees
8. These particular trees are very odd looking, and of the nine species that exist, six of them are only found on the island of Madagascar. The others are located in mainland Africa, and all of these trees are very unique. Their odd shape, with a thick trunk and small bushel of leaves on top, make them a favorite of arboriculturalists around the world. The African variety of these trees are located on savannahs, and large ecosystems are built around them by the animals native to the area. They are crucial trees in Africa and are found very frequently on Madagascar where even more species use this jungle variety of baobab to build their homes.
Bottle Tree
7. This tiny tree is called the bottle tree, and it is native to southern Africa. It is small and grows small seasonal flowers on the little branches that protrude from it. Despite its small and cute appearance, it is actually quite deadly. Local native tribes actually use the tree to add a poison tip their arrows for hunting as the alkaloids this tree produces are very toxic. It is primarily located in Namibia and Angola where the environment is not entirely desert but is considered a semi-desert region, featuring more greenery than the average desert region.
Silk Cotton Tree
6. These trees are truly a sight to behold. They stand immensely tall, and their roots are almost entirely above ground, giving them an ancient and weathered look. The tree in the picture is located at Ta Prohm Temple in Angkor Cambodia. This tree produces precisely what you would think, cotton, or at least a cotton-like substance known as Kapok Fibre. It is grown all over the world, and it is not native to Cambodia by any means. It is native to Asia as a whole and is a very commonly grown tree. These trees grew to be quite massive at 230 feet tall and 9.8 feet in diameter. They are a very versatile and useful tree.
El Arbol de la Sabina
5. The name of this tree literally means Juniper Tree in Spanish, and they are native to the country of Spain. These trees form in this unique bent fashion due to the high winds in the areas which they are native. They are a particularly beautiful tree that takes on an even more impressive form as it grows and is molded by the winds.
The Cashew Tree
4. Most people do not know that cashews are actually grown on trees that are native to northeastern Brazil. These trees are a type of evergreen that produces a highly toxic fruit. The seed of that fruit is a cashew. You are probably saying to yourself, “But a cashew is not a seed it is a nut!” Well if you thought that you would be wrong. The cashew is the seed of a tree that produces highly poisonous fruits. Fortunately for cashew consumers, the seed itself is absolutely harmless.
Wollemi Pine Tree
3. This was thought to be an extinct tree and the only remnants of its kind that still remain on Earth intact today are petrified memories and a few living examples in Wollemi national park, Australia. It is not really a type of pine tree and is not even in the pine family. It is actually in the family called Araucariaceae. Until 1994 when living specimens of these trees were found in Australia, they were thought to be extinct and the oldest fossil record of one dated back to over 200 million years ago, back when dinosaurs still roamed the Earth.
Dragon Blood Tree
2. The dragon blood tree is a fascinating example of nature. Its name comes from the red sap that is held within the veins of the tree. It is native to the Socotra archipelago in the Arabian Sea. It is a tall umbrella-shaped tree that is a close cousin of the palm tree. Sometimes their appearance can be quite odd, for example, you may see one of these umbrella trees, but it would look like an umbrella that has been flipped inside out. It has many crisscrossing branches that form the broad canopy of leaves that spread across its top. This tree also produces a type of red berry that provides the same kind of sap as the tree itself.
Pennantia baylisiana
1. This tree deserves the number one spot on the list because it is the rarest tree on the entire list. There is only one of these left in the world and that makes them beyond endangered. The last of its species is a female tree, and it will never have the chance to reproduce. The lone survivor of the species grows on Three Kings Island, New Zealand and it is highly protected. Other than its extreme rarity, it does not boast anything particularly unique. However, being the last of its kind makes it valuable beyond measure and the human race should feel responsible for its safety and upkeep as the government of New Zealand has shown.

The tree species known only as Pennantia baylisiana could be the rarest plant on Earth. In fact, the Guinness Book of World Records once called it that. Just a single tree exists in the wild, on one of the Three Kings Islands off the coast of New Zealand, where it has sat, alone, since 1945. It didn't used to be so solitary, but humans introduced goats to the island, which ate every other member of its species. Over the last few decades, scientists have tried to create more P. baylisiana trees, but aside from getting cuttings to grow, simple biology got in the way: The tree was thought to be female, and it appeared to need a male to properly generate fruit and seeds. While preparing a recovery plan for the species in the early 1990s, Peter de Lange, a scientist with the New Zealand Department of Conservation (DoC), found several intriguing pieces of information. First, gardeners on the New Zealand mainland had several P. baylisiana seedlings (all cloned from cuttings of the original plant), which proved to be pure examples of the species, not hybrids of other Pennantia species as had originally been thought. Second, one of the seedlings had actually produced fruit following manual pollination. This led de Lange to conclude that the wild tree might not truly be female after all. Additionally, similar research published around the same time suggested that the tree was female but appeared to also bear a low level of male-like qualities that would allow it to pollinate itself. Since then, hundreds of P. baylisiana seedlings have been sold by mainland nurseries, but scientists delayed taking trees or seeds back to Three Kings Islands for fear of introducing diseases or fungal pathogens that could harm the healthy wild tree. But this year, de Lange and his team have returned to Three Kings Islands with the intention of planting 1,600 P. baylisiana seeds. The seeds, says de Lange, have been carefully prepared to eliminate any possibility of disease. "We removed the flesh, air-dried the seeds and then washed them in 10 percent hypochlorite and then 70 percent ethanol in a lamina flow hood. We found the seeds germinated fine with this treatment, and preliminary screening showed no evidence of virus or other diseases." And so P. baylisiana seeds are returning to their native land, and it is hoped that new trees will soon follow. The seeds are expected to take six to 10 years to grow large enough to themselves start flowering. The project will continue until they have 500 viable adult trees. De Lange says this stage is exciting, but there is still risk. "Of course this action does not address the fact that all seedlings are derived from one tree," he says, "so the species is severely bottlenecked," meaning it lacks the genetic diversity that could protect it in the long run from diseases and other factors. "But we have the knowledge that the species is a polyploid [has extra chromosomes], so hopefully it has plenty of resilience." Meanwhile, de Lange reports that his colleagues have not been idle on the island. Janeen Collings, a botanist with the DoC, has planted several cuttings near the original tree, several of which have grown and, with her help, produced fruit. "While birds probably took most mature fruit, some she managed to get and sow in the field," de Lange says. Although the seedlings grew, they unfortunately died within a year. "Although this sounds unpromising, when you consider the islands are virtually inaccessible and it's expensive to get there, and to do this type of work you need to visit three to four times a year, her work is spectacular to say the least," de Lange says.

Has anyone thought about cloning that last lonely tree? With a little nudge one of the clones could turn out male and be mated with a female clone. It's not the same, but it won't die out completely.

ahabtheplant you could "clone" it but the clippings would never become female since they are literally the same tree DNA wise. You could just keep clipping and rooting the last one so it would theoretically never be extinct.

The fruit of cashew tree is actually the nut-shaped part attached to the juicy portion. Its rind is inedible; it has an acrid, caustic sap that can cause mild skin burns. The edible kernel (the cashew nut) is extracted by roasting the whole nut and removing the outer rind. The colorful, juicy part is enlarged flower stalk (false fruit), but when ripe, it is not only edible but sweet and delicious--although having a bit of astringency. A type of fermented drink is also made from the juice. It is NOT 'highly poisonous' as the video claims!

I live in Barbados and cashew tress grow here, people here been eating cashew fruit for generations and all the fruit does is set your teeth on edge if you eat too much. Its not toxic or poisonous and it can give you a very good bowel movement if you eat the right amount. When its fully ripe its delicious!

The fruit the cashew is from is NOT TOXIC AT ALL. Those grow in my country and we call them marañones. They are a tangy, juicy fruit with a somewhat stringy texture. Tougher than a mango and less well liked, and have a very distinctive sweet smell. The fruit can be eaten straight from the tree, boiled with sugar to make a sugary treat or sliced and served with water as a beverage.

I’ve been to see the angel oak in Charleston I lived near it while recovering from a major surgery where only the drs at MUSC’s digestive disease center could & did save my life. This tree is worth visiting & though hard to find is so amazing you should pack a picnic lunch and take a trip to see it it’s free to visit but please make a small donation or visit the small gift shop and buy a souvenir to help the parks service to continue to keep it he@lthy and growing. Just stop by any visitors center while in the area and ask for directions to see the “Angel Oak” as it’s the largest oak in the area. It is so cool under its canopy the perfect spot to get out of the heat and enjoy nature!

The cashew fruit, or "cashew apple" is not toxic, and is in fact edible. The seed pod at the bottom, containing the cashew, is filled with caustic acid.

The Cashew Apple is edible (turns red when ripe), the poisonous part is what surrounds the Cashew seed.

Yes, people eat cashew fruit all the time; it's not toxic. It's rarely exported because it has a short shelf life.

THANK YOU,I'm not the only one to Know that bit of info was incorrect! I was told cashews were native to Cuba. A neighbor 6 blocks away has a tree growing in his yard and to actually See👀 the cashews growing on the tree was a Real treat. I live in Miami,Florida. I watched a show on T.V. about how nuts are Grown, harvested, and packaged and This is how "I" knew about what part was Poisonous. 😉☺

i actually was able to get a dragon blood sappling that i am growing inside it seems cool. Also with all the advancements made in nature science. There isn't a way to produce pollen for the tree to help fertilize it and help it produce seeds to bring it back from the brink of extinction?
