In this video, we take the Tesla Model Y from Florida back home to Iowa - 1500 miles total. It was quite the adventure. We got FSD V12 on that trip and we even ran into a Cybertruck a couple of times. Come along for the ride!

WOW! I had no idea you charged every 90 minutes or so on a road trip through relatively high population areas. What a PITA! Thanks for documenting this. Keeps my expectation for the CT in check.

Man, if I knew you were coming thru Chesterfield, MO I would have let you stop at my house and charge for free. That is where we live. We have only gone on 1 long road trip (St. Louis to Baltimore and back). Having to stop every ~100-150 miles is kind of a bummer. My wife does not like that! But will be going to FL this summer so will see how we do.

A small ev is great around town if you have home overnight charging (bolt or Leaf). For road trip an ICE is still best. Our Subaru Outback has a 4-500 highway range and 8 3/4” ground clearance.

Nice video. I would like to note that the Tesla navigation change of Superchargers is done well before the car gets there, so if anyone pays attention, can see the change on the screen pretty much the moment it’s done. But I do agree, if Tesla would update the software so that people be able to set the minimum SOC at the arrival to a Supercharger, and base the planing of the trip on that value, that would be awesome !

I saw the change. It announced the recalculation route as it was existing off the highway. I think it was just bad timing.

Fun trip as usual, cool you got to see the Cybertruck in the wild. I hope those weird nav resets get fixed soon. They’ve been rare for me, but it’s annoying if you don’t catch it right away, especially if you’re in an unfamiliar place.

Nice house numbers at the beginning of the video. I think it’s cool you can use solar to charge. In the 3 days, 2 night, my total usage was 126kwh. I use 26 kWh from the grid. Typically in March I would send 25 kWh to grid per day. In all actuality because I buy for .13 kWh, but they pay me .02 kWh, you maybe used .50 worth of electricity in those two days to charge.

Tesla route planning drove us insane on our trip to NY and back from FL for the eclipse. We ended up manually planning with the aid of ABRP. Not sure why it's gotten so bad

We stopped in Chesterfield, MO on April 12th on our way home from North Carolina. While charging there, I noticed a Tesla Showroom across the highway. After charging, we went there and saw 3 Cybertrucks outside and one on the showroom floor that we could sit in. That made it tougher to wait until I can configure my own. Hoping for that in June of 2025.

@@deanlevang6031 Many people who have owned or driven a CT are calling it a failed product. It has problems rusting, problems in a basic car wash, the rims damage the tires. Problems charging while pulling a trailer. I could go on and on. Please do your research my friend!

@@DerekDavis213 I have researched. The rust is from surface contaminants during transport. Easily removed. Tire wall wear is from the hubcaps and they are being redesigned. I rarely pull a trailer more than 30 miles..But, thanks for your concern.

On a road trip, I can put 500 miles of range into my Camry, in less that 5 minutes at the pump. And no range anxiety, ever. Gasoline cars still have many advantages!

@@maycrew9126 Yes, 90 years of infrastructure too. Gas pumps are everywhere, I can drive anywhere in America, even to the most remote place, with no anxiety. Tesla people always must think: where is the closest supercharger? Will I make it there?

@@DerekDavis213 Thank you for continuing to prove my point. EV driving and infrastructure is still in its infancy. And unless Tesla drivers all lack the ability to read and do basic math there is no anxiety to be had.
@DerekDavis213
@DerekDavis213 3 ай бұрын
@@maycrew9126 Of course there is anxiety with Tesla! If you have the heat on or the Air Conditioning on in the car, that reduces the range a lot. If you are driving up a long incline, that reduces the range too. If you have 4 people in the car plus luggage, that reduces the range too. If a gasoline car runs out of gas, no problem. A few miles away, get a gas can with 2 gallons in there. If a Tesla battery goes down to zero, you have a BIG problem.
@maycrew9126
@maycrew9126 3 ай бұрын
@@DerekDavis213 Stop projecting. You may have anxiety about it, but you and I don't speak for ALL Tesla owners. I live in the Midwest, and the charging infrastructure is as bad as it's ever going to be today. Because every week there are exponentially more and more places to "fill up" so to speak. And I can already go wherever I want to go in the country, today. So again, unless someone lacks basic math and language skills, there is no anxiety to be had. So you think that when a Tesla dies they just never drive again? 😂 Like, welp, it was fun while it lasted. This one's a gonner. Like getting more fuel eventually for my ice vehicles, I'd get more fuel for my EV. Sure, as of today it might take longer, but even that is improving rapidly also.

I really like Jim's videos, but it seems to me like he drives a standard range Model Y, which I think should be made more clear. With my Model Y LR, I am able to go something like 230-280 miles before needing to charge.

There is also the principal of doing more shorter charges in a Tesla because it charges fastest from 15-45% state of charge. Less time charging overall.
