Today I am building an electric snow racer using 3D printed parts. There are 240 screws in the back wheel to get traction on the ice. The wheel is powered by a 15000 watt brushless motor and a 300A electric speed controller.

To fix the grip, really all you needed to do was mount the shocks so that they would have some preload once you sit on it. So, when holding everything in the air, the wheel would be too far down, if that makes sense. That way the shocks are always actively pushing your wheel into the ice.

The chain tension while the motor is running would also pull it towards the motor (up). Maybe mount the motor lower, too.

This is so cool. It would be great to see it on a large lake or something so you can get full speed. I just wonder whether it would be better to have a blade for steering? Also maybe the wheel should be mid-mounted and steering at the rear? That way you would wouldn’t need additional weight so it should be faster and more agile
@fishsticks4981

and he needs to make a chain guard out of metal for safety also he could use a seat thats the same style as a snow mobile for protection and better weight distribution so the power goes straight to the ground and a ice blade in the front for steering
@BilldalSWE

Yeah, putting blades under all all 3 skids like on ice-yachts would do wonders for both speed and handeling.
@TheLordNemesis

The blades from old ice skates could work, way less friction than the plastic. And a steel sheet behind the seat, if any metal part comes loose it'll shred that thin piece of acrylic to bits. The traction problem could be solved by stronger springs, the shocks are not desirable because they dampen the motion of the drive wheel.

.. And having the chain tensioned between a stationary frame and hinged arm is not the best idea… good thing the shocks are super stiff or else he would have an epic backslap from the chain flying off.. 🤯😅

That feeling when you've been struggling on a build, all your ideas aren't working, you can't diagnose the problem and you're in a pit of despair.... then a brief moment of brilliance followed by exhilaration of it finally working. Nothing like it, and it was obvious on this build. Good stuff!
@OliverKehm

The exhilaration is mixed with resentment of all the time that could have been saved. I know it well! These things are just part of the path, however, and can't be avoided.

A few suggestions to improve things: 1) Put the motor on the swing arm. 2) Remount the shocks so the wheel holds up most of the sled. This way, it’ll dig in better and you won’t need to use weights. 3) But blades on, at least, the steering ski so you actually can turn.
@gtjack9
@gtjack9 2 жыл бұрын
Looks like it needs to have a lot more spring pressure and extension (range) on that rear swing arm, also chain tensioner. Otherwise it seems to work really well, good grip on ice means hard packed snow will be a breeze.
@astroidea
@astroidea 2 жыл бұрын
I would put the wheel under the seat between the skis. No need to add any extra weight then.
@gtjack9
@gtjack9 2 жыл бұрын
@@astroidea I briefly thought about that possibility, however you’d have less steering authority.
@Doktoreq
@Doktoreq 2 жыл бұрын
@@gtjack9 Not really spring pressure, just preload. I agree that rear swing arm requires more downward motion range which coupled with more preload would give decent enough grip. My list would include: - moving shocks mounting points on the swing arm closer to the hinges to increase springs preload - might be necessary to tweak swing arm hinges position to allow more swing arm downward movement to allow installing shock with higher preload without use of spring compressing tools (more downward position of swing arm at shocks installation time gives you higher preload at ride angle). - moving motor onto the swing arm cause without that with swing arm motion you go from belt falling off to belt so tight it'll snap (tensioner won't have enough range). - i would made "safety" screen higher than at least half of chain length measuring from motor axis - snapped chain tends to act like a whip with rotation axis centered around the engagement point with the cog.
@TioDave
@TioDave 2 жыл бұрын
He always seems to miss on the geometry and the pressure of this style drive. The wheel should really drop an inch or so below the sled when not sprung. The motor sprocket should be inline with the armature. It seems to work out well with the weights though.

@@Doktoreq you nailed it. While watching I didn't understand why he was mounting the motor on the frame instead of the swingarm. And I didn't get why he was mounting the springs without preloading.

Fun project. The force from the chain will collapse your joint and therefore shortening the chainstay(giving more chain play) and lifting the wheel when accelerating. Pivot should be slightly above motor to add traction when accelerating. Or mounted on the same rail as motor :) thanks for the entertaining video.
