Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't sipahis more defined by their status as, should I say, "non-hereditary knights," and not necessarily by their equipment? Couldn't a sipahi be skilled as both an archer and a heavy cavalryman? Anyway, that wasn't supposed to be an attack on your authenticity. Nice armor, nice video. Ottoman weapons and armor are indeed overlooked topics in the historical scene.
@isamartell5 ай бұрын
Yeah. I use the term because the is the idea I had when doing this. But I do show and practice the archer aspect too.

@@isamartellno problem there as sometimes its the best way to embed something to the audience by not being too technical in the details. the majority don't like that and can't wrap their heads around it. There are so many instances where their name implies their status and not their unit.
@hectortroy867111 күн бұрын
Very roughly speaking they were divided into 3 types during their heyday. Rumelian (Balkan) Sipahi who would be moderately armored and fight with lances. Anatolian Sipahi who would be lighter armored and fight with a bow and a lance. And then Kapikulu (Imperial Servant) Sipahi who would have the most amount of armor and be more similar to the Rumelian Sipahi. I imagine the armor in the video would probably only be worn by the Kapikulu Sipahi.

Sipahi is not a knigh, or similar to it. Sipahi is a man who was lended some farmland by the sultan so he would farm it for 5 years, then buy himself armor and weapons for the war. If he agrees, then he can lend it for another 5 years and so on. Typically, they would agree and the farmland would be lended continuously to his family.

@@mammi7699 I think your thinking of Timariots who were given land in return for military assistance. Sipahis didn't manage land unless they were also Timariots. Many Sipahis served in the bodyguard retinue of Timariots and Sipahis of the Sublime Porte were strictly military and had no land managing duties.

In some of the manuscripts with illustrations I’ve looked at it seems like the cavalrymen also wore the mail coats underneath their clothing or used different pieces of the armor. Its nice to see the whole set assembled
@isamartell3 ай бұрын
Yes, they did have coats to wear over their armor. Also, some of the coats wear lined with mail as well.

how much protection does this give compared to buhurt gear? I want to build a more unique eastern set but im worried it won't fit regulations.
@isamartell5 ай бұрын
I only do Buhurt duels in it. That’s what the pictures are from at the end of the video. I wouldn’t do buhurt melee with it just because you wouldn’t want to wear the mail and then there would be a ton of gaps. If you want burhurt eastern armor, your best to go with something that has small over lapping plates. Though I do use this for Harnischfechten and it is fine. But that is always done with the mail and you don’t take repeated bashing hits.
@ainmaloy17275 ай бұрын
If you really want a easternish buhurt gear - mongol or russian armor will be the best you can get to achieve protection and some historical truth. It's definitely ain't new and original way but it's the only way you can get both goals. Hatanga degel - something about a equivalent to western brigandine. Or russian scale armor that were used in the end of XIV and in XV if my memory serves me right

How did this armour differ from East European armour as the two (I think) mutually inspired each other and thus came out very similar from what I can tell
@isamartell3 ай бұрын
Some aspects are very similar. As you are right that they were all one region, so influenced each other. Probably the most distinctive Turkish piece would be the Krug style torso protection.

When you are fighting in armor you are dripping with sweat. However, linen fabrics help cool you. Also, remember that the region of Turkish army’s was not like desert. It gets cold in their region too.

That sword is not Turkish style
@isamartell4 ай бұрын
What do you mean by it’s not Turkish? Do you mean that it’s not a Kilij? There were various types of swords used in Ottoman Empire. Many were Persian blades with Ottoman hilts or vice versa. Also, personal preference. If you are going to look at this entire kit of completely historical handmade armor, and your take away is that the hand forged historical sword is not Turkish, then really you are trolling. Don’t be a Troll.
@guneygacka7744 ай бұрын
@@isamartell I am not a troll. This sword is not a Kılıç. This is Shamsir. Iranian sword.
@isamartell4 ай бұрын
@@guneygacka774 I am aware of what the sword is, but the video is about armor. So there was no point in your comment, which comes off like a trolling remark or in a manner which insinuates that we don't know what kind of swords we are using. Also, I am sure that you are aware that kilij just means sword and they come in various shapes, like I mentioned in the previous comment. Not all of them had the typical killij shape that the west identifies the sword as. Some look exactly like the one in this video, aside from having the bulbed pommel, typically found on Turkish swords (though not all of them had this also) If you did not mean in that manner, then apologies but next time perhaps stick to the topic of the video to avoid confusion. Please note this link which shows various swords and you can see the blade of some are the same as the blade in this video, as an easy reference, though later in period. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilij#/media/File:Ottoman_kilij_from_the_Hellenic_Revolution_of_1821_(8667698557).jpg
