16 Cord Kumihimo Flower and Stripe Braid

A video tutorial demonstrating how to braid with 16 cords on the round disk to make a braid with a flower and stripe design. For close-ups of the braid and the disk set-up please visit this page on my website, where you will also find the quantities required to make a bracelet.

I hope that this video will show how easy it is to braid with 16 cords. You can have so much fun with your own designs, using the free pattern generators on line to plan the cord layout.

Prue, I hope you don't mind, me making a beaded version of this stunning pattern. I thought, why not substitute the colored strings with the same colored beads, on a c-lon cord of a neutral color? I tried it, doing the disc turn Counterclockwise, but it didn't work out well. Then I watched your intro again, and you mentioned that you could do a Clockwise turn, but the pattern would come out slanted. Well... it gives the most beautiful rounded flowers that way. I'm using a core of satin cord / rattail 2.5mm 8/0 seed beads 0.5mm c-lon cord I hope you'll give it a try yourself, and maybe you can make a tutorial on it, for the people that want to add beads, but can't create their own beaded patterns (yet).

I am so glad to hear that you have tried this with beads and that it worked out well for you. I keep meaning to do a video for a beaded version, but I have not found the time. I have some written information about 12 and 16 cord beaded braids on my website and it would be good to have a video to back it up. When using the 1 mm satin cord, what size mm did you use for your jewelry closures?

This Is a really beautyful design! But i don't understand how you start the work. Do you fold the cords in half? Do you make a knot? It is not clear...

Fold in half. Tie them in the center with a short piece of cord, then slip through the hole of the disk. Don't forget to use a weight

How thick will the finished braid be if using 1mm satin cord for this 16-cord pattern?

It would be about one centimeter, but cord varies so much in width and firmness, even when it is all sold as 1cm, that when you multiply that by 16 cords you can get considerable variation!
