Hi guys, and welcome back to yasminecollects! Today I am starting my retro PC journey. I do all my channel work on mac, but I have the ultimate soft spot for old school windows. Give me all the microsoft paint, windows movie maker, and the XP goodness that we all remember and love. This is the Sony Vaio pcv w500, an all in one desktop made in Japan. It also doubles as a tv (of sorts) with a folding keyboard design.
This hasn't been tested since I purchased it, but that will change in this video! Get excited to see if this PC works, and yes this means you'll be seeing a lot more PC related content on this channel YAY.

It's awesome seeing someone new getting into retro PCs, or really PCs in general. The beeping it was making when you first tried to start it is a beep code. Usually they are a pattern 3 or 4 either long or short beeps. Long single beeps like that, really any beep code, makes me think RAM right off. The beep codes can change from machine to machine too but the important thing about them is they have to be something serious enough to prevent the machine from completing the Power On Self Test (POST) but also not so serious that the CPU isn't working and the lights are on but no one is home. Video and expansion cards can cause it too but 8/11 times it's memory related. Oh, and, if you're getting beep codes but all the components seem to be there, often something is just loose. These older machines have probably been moved and jostled around a bunch. Sometimes, things just stop making good contact and you simply just have to reseat them by pulling them out and slapping them back in.

I admire your bravery. The first PCs i worked on were bog standard generic beige boxes, and opening those was terrifying. Good luck! And remember, it can't get any more busted than it already is. 😅

I have a few tips for you. First, Hard drive standards changed in the early 2000's, right in the middle of the Windows XP era, so you have to be careful with buying the right kind of hard drive. It could either be a SATA hard drive or an IDE hard drive. I think the connectors at 7:37 are IDE. Second, Memory comes in different generations. This computer is probably DDR 2 or it could be original DDR. I recommend buying a DDR-333 stick and a DDR2-800 stick and seeing which works. Memory is super cheap so that shouldn't be a problem. Third, I recommend trying to find a power supply. The kind that is inside the computer, not the wall plug. The reason is that even if the Computer is turning on right now, power supplies last maybe 20 years tops. It's going to be difficult to find a replacement because those Sony probably use a non-standard shape. It might take a very long time to find the right model on ebay so you might as well start searching now. Fourth, you'll need to clean out the motherboard unit and fans for dust at some point. Buy some thermal paste to put between the CPU and the CPU's fan. This isn't necessary but it helps with the long term maintance of the computer and thermal paste is very cheap.

ahhh man ive got sooooooooooooo much old ram and hard drives, pretty much all computer components tbh. I wish i could pass you the parts you need thru the screen lmfao. It's really cool seeing someone getting into PCs for the first time. my whole life I've been obsessed with computers so all this kinda stuff is like so deeply ingrained in my head and just completely second nature to me, but get me in front of a broken vcr and I want to cry lmao all the mechanical bits are so hard for me to understand. I had similar feelings when i got into makeup and doing my nails, took me aaaages to get comfortable and get a decent rythm goin.

It’s really funny how the hobby progression is the same haha. I’ve been wearing and doing makeup since I was 11 or so, so that’s nothing and man I love working on a VCR. it just clicks for me, PCs as you can see tho we need some work 😂 In our lords year 2024 we still can’t teleport items through the screen, the futuristic promises we never saw fulfilled….

Speaking of the nails issue, I've run into a similar thing. I don't put on artificial nails, but if I've recently clipped my nails it means I can't do PC repairs for a while - I've had to wait a couple weeks once for my nails to grow a bit before I could start on a repair project. Also, apologies for the super long comment on your previous video - I just had a lot to say.

Long story short, my sister had a all-in-one PC with Windows 8.1 in it, I remember that she told me that she paid $2000 for the whole thing, and it's been her computer for years until the motherboard burned out, the HDMI picture still works, but not the computer, she was pretty bummed out about it, and of course it's a Gateway PC.

The cords you see at 8:30 are not for the RAM. Tbh i don't know what it is, hopefully it is something not essential to it turning on, like maybe a network card. The RAM goes right where you were pointing at 8:15. The modules would go directly into the motherboard. You are correct it is missing RAM, that's what the repeating long beep means. The construction of it is very compact compared to desktop towers of the era, which, while it makes it very 2000s sleek, also makes your repair job just a bit more difficult. Nonetheless I am excited for an upcoming update, I love the Windows XP era of PCs!!
@regularhumanoid
@regularhumanoid 6 ай бұрын
One more thing. I'd recommend looking into simply using a compact flash or SD card instead of a mechanical hard drive. Another commenter said it looks like you have an IDE connector, so look for an IDE to compact flash adapter. It's one thing if you manage to find a free hard drive, but if you're gonna spend money I'd just go straight for an adapter to save you the troubles of a clunky hard drive.
@YasmineCollects

@@regularhumanoidthis is a great point, I found the original hard drive that came in this model for 21$ after shipping and all that. But honestly I’d rather do this alternative. I also definitely want to get to the power supply and check more of the internals but Lordy is this thing packed in tight as you said 😂

At 8:30, I'm pretty sure that connector is some non-standard connector for the optical drive backplane. The drive will get it's power and data through the single funky looking laptop-style IDE connector. I bet that cable plugs into the board the drive plugs into though.

The Japanese W500 is a 2Ghz Celeron and has 106 Keys . I have this Vaio but hard drive died a few years back and cannot get the TV/Capture to work as there is NO drivers . All software bundled can have updates but not downloadable.Also the top part was supposed to press and slide off which covers the Ram, Max 2GB DDR3200. Hard drive was WIndows XP Home IDE "pins" Originall I had a 750GB IDE but it made too much heat so I add an adaptor to sata and use 500GB SSD. This is a nice but heavy unit.

Hopefully you can find some RAM for that system. Given it's a Pentium 4 I assume it's just plain DDR and not DDR2 or higher. Until you get the case open more or find a service manual it's kind of a gamble. Also hopefully you can find a used IDE drive in good shape. eBay will probably be your best bet to find parts of that age. If you have a local electronic recycler that resells old parts it that would be your other option. If you were local I'd help out, I got lots of spare DDR sticks from old PC's I've had to give up for more room. 😂😂
