My Cockatiels' name was Carlos. He lived 34 years before passing a couple of years ago. Seeing Zugda brings me many happy memories. He loved to sit on my shoulder and nibble at my ear. He could say 'Hello Carlos' and would repeat 'itty bitty buddy' endlessly! I really miss that. Thank you for sharing.

I had to look it up, they live 15 to 25 years in captivity. 😳 Wow! That a long time for such a small bird. That's a real commitment for sure.

What an amazing & touching relationship these two have got. She's quite right about not having birds as pets, though. Too many people acquire parrots, cockatiels etc, without considering the ramifications of long term ownership. Plus the morality of caging a creature designed to fly free. A conundrum indeed.

On one hand, I agree with the other comments that another bird friend might greatly improve his life. On the other hand, I understand one bird with a long lifespan and high emotional needs is already a huge commitment and raising another bird would be overwhelming. Also, there's always the possibility that two birds don't get along. I totally understand why that might not be the best idea. Besides, he seems very happy living this life where he gets to interact with his human every day and dance around his safety blanket...sorry, emotional support mug.

He is so cute! Kate's relationship with this bird reminds me of the one I have with my cockatiel. Chloe is my best buddy, & we do nearly everything together. I know what she wants based on her body language & calls, & she's a good support buddy whenever I'm having a bad day.

This assessment is spot on! Cockatiels (especially the males) are a bit wacky but incredibly loving and loyal. I had one I raised from a baby when I was 16YO and he was with me until I was 45YO (with wife and three kids). He would fly from room to room to follow me, asking "Where ya goin??"😂 I don't think most people have the ability to take care of a pet for 30 years.

You may well need those spare mugs too. Our cockatiel, who adopted us at a local pool, has been with us for 36 years. You may be carrying that mug for a very long time! Zugda is delightful and displaying many 'dominant bird of the flock' behaviors. Cockatiels fly in flocks of up to a thousand, the dominant bird has to be very bossy to maintain their position. Our boy has a small pillow that he loves, and two big cockatoos he's helped rescue. They are all wonderful characters. I agree they are a very long commitment, it has surprised me that cockatiels live so long, and cockatoos are an 80-100 year commitment. Like with dogs and cats, please adopt! Cockatiels and cockatoos are wonderful companions, but because of their longevity often outlive their owners, and need adopting. Mine will go to my daughter and her children, and are with them once or twice weekly. I hope you have many more years with your wonderful Zugda!

We have a cockatiel that will be 27 years old in June, he was a gift for our daughter who was 9 at the time and now she’s 36. Jazz(the cockatiel) loves an empty frozen juice can and will stay on the top of his cage for hours as long as he has his can🩶🤍🧡

Adorable! She’s right. Ppl really don’t know what a commitment Birds can be. Parrots & other exotics can live as long as most humans! I’ve known ppl to have passed them down to 3 generations. They must provide for them in their wills, so if something happens, their birds have a home to go to. Actually everyone w/a pet should make that provision for them. Be sure you have a couple willing homes for them. Too many wind up abandoned in shelters after their cherished owner dies. Heartbreaking!😢 Glad to see she has backup mugs! I was thinking that while watching. I’d make sure I had a dozen! 😂 This was really cute! Thanks for posting.👍

As a solo cockatiel parent, I understand that having multiple birds is sometimes not the best option. But seems that he could also benefit from another bird friend! However, he seems highly content with you! ❤

This was identical to my family cockatiel we had growing up. Except it wasn't a mug, it was an oven mitt🤣... He would scream when the oven mitt wasn't in the same room as him. It had nothing to do with other birds, he just loved that oven mitt.
