An often overlooked source is the OLDER Boy Scouts of America handbook. It covers all manner of things pertaining to bushcraft/survival/ camping, etc.

Very true, when the Scouts were still scouts you learned a lot, knots, orienteering, camping and cooking to name a few. You can find a Boy Scout manual from the early 1920s on line and print it out 👍. Good advice there

Hey....Boonies aren't "corny" 🤣 I wore them my whole time in Iraq and still wear them hunting here in Florida. MRE's will made you so constipated it will feel like giving childbirth when you finally go. Advice is the only thing cheap on this list. I've used all of this stuff in the US Army and would recommend. Much on this list I own, and purchased with my own money after getting out. I use a lot of this gear for hunting, others as preps. Most I have duplicates of for myself and the wife. ECWCS Gen III Level I: Baselayer Top & Bottom (light weight long johns) ECWCS Gen III Level 2: Baselayer Top & Bottom (thicker long johns) ECWCS GENIII Level 5: Shell layer - Soft shell cold weather jacket and trousers (windproof, slightly waterproof shell) ECWCS GENIII Level 6: Shell layer - Extreme cold/wet weather jacket and trousers (waterproof Gore-Tex rain suit) Military (spectre brand) "Jerry" water can, extremely durable plastic, 5 gallon (BPA free, made in tan or green). Currently used by the military. I just got 2 for $45ea/$90 total on ebay, new. US Army Military 4 Piece Modular Sleeping Bag Sleep System. Thin bag (temperate) + thick bag (cold) can be combined for extreme cold, waterproof Gore-Tex bivy bag and stuff sack. US Army ACH Helmet (look for the ones with pads that velcro into it, not straps or webbing) Please don't buy a high-cut bump helmet....they're not bulletproof. Kevlar one's run like $850+. A good condition ACH off ebay runs $100-$250. You can buy new pads and chinstraps online. US Army IOTV (improved outer tactical vest) with Level III soft ballistic armor (stops up to 9mm), butt protector, groin protector and yoke. Adding plates = Level IV (stops up to 7.62 AP). The IOTV is currently produced by Point Blank Body Armor, Protective Products Enterprises, UNICOR and Creative Apparel Associates and commonly found BAE Systems & KDH Defense Systems US Army M40 CBRN gas mask. (M50 is current issue but expensive) We still used the M40 in 2012. 40mm CBRN filters are available from MIRA for $30+ each, shelf life of 7 years. Ka-bar knives Eagle Industries backpacks, duffels or mag pouches USGI MOLLE II Modular Lightweight Load Carrying Equipment Ruck Sack with frame and 2 sustainment pouches. Any Camelbak brand backpacks (not issue but commonly purchased & used by servicemembers) Military Issue Gore-Tex boots are good to have a set of. I like Belleville Gore-Tex boots for rain/cold and Rocky tactical boots for hot weather.

I can taste the 2qt canteen through the screen. Those things always taste like stagnant water that has been sitting in a hot cooler for months. The hard plastic canteen tastes great though. Dont know what it is about that plastic taste on the 1 qt, but the 2 qt does it all wrong.

I prefer the old steel canteens with cup. Reason is brandy and whiskey taste better vs a plastic canteen. Also you can put them over a fire to purify water and you cannot that with a plastic canteen.

Build to last. Items from the old days were built to last. Items today ( in all too many cases) are built to break in a few years time. Thus you will need to buy a new one. This is a deliberate policy by manufacturers. Also they can skimp on materials, saves costs. Win- win from their perspective.

There are both pros and cons to this comment, but I bought an old Kindle and store all kinds of FM’s on it. Also if I run across good info on a website I will copy and paste it into a Word doc, save it as a PDF and email it to my a kindle. Any old tablet type device will work. Granted it’s subject to breaking and failing but it’s a lot better than toting around 30 lbs of manuals. I have a backup to mine and keep it in a faraday. Just another option for n the ol’ 2 is 1 and 1 is none mindset.

Ok, so I enjoy collecting and using old gear. Specifically I have the M1956 LBE: H harness, adapter for carrying field (butt) pack at near shoulder level, 56 and 61 field packs, ww2/ Korea era canteens and pouches, ww2 hatchet with cover, Etool with canvas cover, machete with canvas sheath, m7 bayonet knife and sheath, and more recent era poncho with liner. I enjoy changing the gear carried around to fit differing choices for a day in the woods. The ability to easily switch gear, where attached, and what the total loadout is really makes the military surplus a nice option for my purposes. I can go minimal or heavier. Just depends.

Australia we are starved for this gear. Most military surplus stores just sell high ticket camping gear. Guns are highly regulated as is ammo. A usa online store shipping to Australia and new Zealand that sells the very edge of what's legal (not illegal!) Would do very very well. For example... kits do very well. Chamber reducers (can be placed in a normal pipe) would do well, diy armour kits and body kits for cars and persons, retractable number plates, crossbow kits, spring knives are illegal but sell the knife and the spring separately as a kit with a disclaimer, real usa military surplus (what's available in usa is rare as hens teeth in aus)... all stuff legal in aus (given a disclaimer) but cannot get.

The black part is the stand+windshield, the green alumn pot+lid is the Swedish mess kit. There's also a stainless-steel version (I got one), but it is rare to find nowadays. Inside the pot rests an alcohol burner. Any type will do, but the original Swedish one (3 crowns stamped in) is hard to beat. The combo is a storm-proof cooking setup that's outright phenomenal, albeit not ultralight. The German mess kit looks similar, but has no stove nor stand. I got both and have used them extensively outdoors. The Swedish kit is in my family van during wintertime, together with bottled water and dry instant soups.

The americans who fort in WW1 European theater wore the brodie helmet issued to the british and later around 1917 made their own version of the tomny helmet called the M1917 👍🇭🇲🤠

@@Pygar2 Confirmed. I got off Active Duty Army in 2012. Purchased something off sportsman's guide, I believe it was a piece of ECWICS gear I couldn't find in my size anywhere else and it was a complete knockoff. I emailed them & sent it back. There's actually more knockoff's than I thought out there. I had to be very selective on ebay and request photos of labels & such after getting burned there as well. Luckily I've got most of what I need now.

I recently went through my medical gear.. My fiberglass casting/ splinting supplies had all aged out.. Passed exp date. They got rock hard. Worthless.. Check your exp dates.. My advice with meds. Any antibiotics... Toss them after exp date. Any other meds useually last year's ..

Black dye.. on the cammo changes things alot.. for the better and it doesn't look so military.. still shows cammo pattern but definitely different.. less likely to get vets aggravated... I'm a vet so I know the things that piss me off.. like Mr special forces eod tradoc comand Sargent major general black ops delta force comando Para forward observer ranger with his dd214 redacted to the point it shows he was latrine specialist and his 2alpha was misplaced by certain superiors.. But he has several purple hearts mov's silver stars that he can't wear because his missions are still top secret.. won't be and jail very long because he has a special number to call... So yeah black dye.. works well.. some things are quick some take time..
