This is the BEST version of this song as it had been sung by Elvis, a black Opera singer (the original singer from the film called Unchained in 1955) and many others but Bobby Hatfield's version is the most loved and in my opinion the very best. There are 2 of them Bill Medley is the other one and he is a Bass/baritone and the two of them together are stunning. Bobby died some years ago but Bill is still alive and singing. It is worth looking up their other songs because together they are gorgeous. A lot of their songs are on U-Tube. 🇦🇺🇦🇺👏👏👏😃😃

This song sounds incredible TODAY in a world where every other singer is performing vocal runs, but imagine hearing this in an era where no-one had ever really heard a "Run" before. This shit was both angelic and alien-like. Artists like Bobby and others like Aaron Neville were not only technically incredible but were literally shaping music for TODAY's genres.

There are singers out there like it but they are not in popular music and are sidelined in pop music. Today music is all about engineering and production with the sing really just being a pretty face and nothing else. Popular music changed in the 1990s and it all went downhill from there.

I'm impressed by the fact *Bobby Hatfield,* recorded and released this song by *"The Righteous Brothers",* even though the other "brother", *Bill Medley,* doesn't sing in it. I'm also impressed that *Bill Medley* recognized that this song needed to be sung by *Bobby Hatfield* alone. They were a team, and there was no competition or jealousy between them. You can hear that fact in the other songs they sing together, and see it in their body language when they perform together on stage.

My uncle used to call this "blue eyed soul" which was a term popular back in his day when this was a new release/performance. I've always thought it is one of the most beautiful love songs ever written. There have been many covers over the years, but Bobby Hatfield's ethereal voice is just sheer perfection for this song. His version is my all time favorite since I was a little kid in the 1970's. :-)

Bobby Hatfield, tenor of the duo. He had intense stage fright and succumbed to the grip of cocaine and alcohol. He was a faithful husband with 4 children. He passed in 2003 at 63 yoa of a heart attack in Kalamazoo, MI. He was born in Wisconsin then moved to southern California where he met Bill Medley who is still performing at 79yoa. He recorded Unchained Melody in 1965, ten years after it was written and performed by several great artists, but once Bobby sang it, it became his trademark. I am dedicated to Gospel music to the Glory of God, but this duo and this song has captivated me. I hope to see Bobby sing in Heaven some day, but with what his daughter said at his funeral, we can only hope. She said; "I finally got daddy to go to Church...."

Falsetto Xavier is a "false" voice. Just about anyone can do it. Bobby Hatfield -- however -- hit all the notes with his pure tenor and not in falsetto but with perfect tonality and his high pitched voice is not what many singers can do. "Unchained Melody," by an earlier doo-wop group sang it faster (Vito & the Salutations) -- and Vito's voice was falsetto. Your assessment was quite good. Good job.
@avidrdr5640

I've often wondered what it would have been like for him if he had aspired toward opera. With his natural range and perfect pitch he could have trained to be THE world class opera tenor of the 20th Century.
@lastrada52
@lastrada52 3 жыл бұрын
@@avidrdr5640 - Probably not avidrdr. I'll explain: The great "opera" sounding Andrea Boccelli never made it successfully as an opera singer despite his fine vocals. He sang opera but he never became a world-class opera singer like Pavarotti, Caruso, or Mario Lanza. Same with the singer Robert Goulet. Neither had the opera extraordinary ability for major operatic roles. Bobby Hatfield was great but he was not opera world-class. His lone solo LP never came close to the quality of Unchained Melody & was shelved. Some people have to stay within the narrow confines of their talent & though they sound like they have the potential -- they don't. Opera is extremely difficult & takes more than just a wonderful voice. There was one instance where the great Pavarotti himself faltered on one note & the audience nearly crucified him. On this live Unchained Melody, you will hear at the end that Hatfield actually cut his last note short -- the breath was not there to sustain it longer. I think he'd remarkable -- but even Mariah Carey with all her octaves could never be an opera singer in the true sense.

The song was written for a 1955 movie called Unchained, about a guy in prison who couldn’t wait to get back to his girl. The guy who wrote the lyrics refused to put any of that stuff into the song so it became a general love song, sung by many before the Righteous Brothers did it .. but nobody else did it like this, altho many other singers covered the song later (including Elvis) and based their versions of it on this version by The Righteous Brothers ... It is a solo song, but the Righteous Brothers were a duo so they flipped a coin to see who was going to do it, and Bobby Hatfield won. The other member of the duo was Bill Medley who arranged the music for the studio version as well as for this performance AND he played piano while Bobby was singing .. so it was still a team effort. Bobby sang another version for the movie “Ghost “ and this revived interest in the 1965 version (this one) which was then re-released. The Righteous Brothers and this song made history by having two different versions of the same song in the Top20 of the charts at the same time, competing against each other!

I am 81 and have heard several artist before bobby’s version and several after. No one comes close to this, Bobby owns it. This version came out as I was headed for Viet Nam. You can feel the loneliness in the words and the way we felt as we were away from our families for one long year. Bill and Bobby always did one solo on each of there albums and while on tour. They both wanted to do “Unchained”, so they flipped a coin. The music was written as the theme for the little-known prison film “Unchained” (January 1955), hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack. It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by the Righteous Brothers. The movie “Unchained” is about a man in prison and longing for his wife and children. Hoping his wife will still be there when he gets out. So you can now understand the meaning of the song. The movie was not very good, or so my friends told me. But we were all teenagers so what did we now. Several artists sang it and it made the billboard top 100. But no one can come close to Bobby Hatfield’s version. Bobby’s version hit the top ten chart. And did it again when it was used in the movie “Ghost” It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by Bobby. According to the song's publishing administrator, over 1,500 recordings of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages.

I disagree. I’ve seen a few of these reaction videos to this song and he is the first to actually present any analysis of Bobby Hatfields delivery and vocal skills. It is after all a reaction video and he gave a reaction. If you want to just hear the song totally uninterrupted I’d suggest watching a straightforward performance video.

Xavier, I was 9 years old in 1965, and remember watching the Righteous Brothers on TV. I can also remember when the Beatles first performed in America on the Ed Sullivan Show. It was a big deal back then, and everyone was home watching.

This is from, "The Andy Williams Show." Bill Medley (the other Righteous Brother) and Andy are listening, but out of the picture. Bill said how he regretted letting Bobby Hatfield perform that song solo because no one could do it better and a duo (the Righteous Brothers) would only pale in comparison.

This was Bobby Hatfield’s solo performance. It show cased his wonderful craft. You would find soul and Inspiration by the Righteous Brothers a equally well crafted. Thank you for your reaction.

1965, Bobby Hatfield, 25 yrs old. They are a duo with Bill Medley, baritone. Bobby is a tenor with extreme range. He hits 24 notes in this song.

This is "Bobby's Song." Many have tried, but Bobby owns it. This is this the first time I've heard anyone comment on his beautiful vibrato. no falsetto, Bobby was a countertenor. No strain, no effort. And NO auto-tune. When God Made Bobby, he broke the mold. Again, NOT falsetto. AsA Counter-Tenor, Bobby could go from Baritone to G5 or higher. All natural, no falsetto here!!

Bobby Hatfield is one of two Righteous Brothers; there is a story that both Bobby and Bill Medley wanted to do the song individually. It is said a coin was flipped and Bobby's version is the best performance of this song from a mid 50's movie titled the same as the song. Covered a number of times over the years, but nobody comes close to Bobby's vocal control and outright ease in the performance! Soundtrack used in the movie " Ghost " with Patrick Swayzee and Demi Moore. Just a great redition of the song!

The Righteous Brothers were dubbed, "Blue-Eyed Soul" back in the day. Bobby sang this song live (Andy Williams TV Show). The album cut didn't have him hitting the G4 (G5-?) note at the end. The album version was at a lower octave. Not sure why but this track is by far the best. This song is 55/yrs old and is as fresh today as it was in 1965. This should serve as a lesson for all young people. This song will forever endure the test of time. Why? Because, "Class will never go out of Style".

"Unchained Melody" was originally recorded by Al Hibbler in the mid-1950s, and was a "Top 10" hit on the Billboard Pop Music Charts at that time. The Righteous Brothers covered the song in 1965, and it became their signature song. The Righteous Brothers re-recorded "Unchained Melody" for the "Ghost" Soundtrack Album in 1990.

What I enjoyed about your analysis is that it was about the performer and not about you. I appreciate that. Wow! You are so knowledgeable and in depth with this reaction...it was brilliant!!! I have to be honest, I watched this because I love seeing young people hear the greats for the first time, simply to see their enjoyment. I didn't actually expect such an in depth reaction...very well done!! I enjoy seeing more reactions from you in the future! You should listen to Righteous brothers "You lost that loving feeling" That feature both Righteous brothers, Bobby hatfield and Bill Medley. They aren't really brothers. They were initially called something else but while performing for a platoon of African-American servicemen, someone said "these brother's are Righteous!!" They liked it, and changed their name . (At least that's was the story I was told!) 👍👍❤🧡💚💜💛🌹🌹🌹🌹

others have maybe told you but The Rightious Brothers were not brothers. Bobby Hatfield is singing here and his 'brother' is Bill medley. they normally dueted on songs. Bobby died in 2003. Nice to see such a young guy appreciating an old classic. I'm almost 70 so grew up (luckily) listening to this proper music. Take a listen to Jay Black (Jay & the Americans singing "Cara Mia") then maybe Gene Pitney singing it or any of his songs. Well done fella :-)

I know, this is 3 years later, but I just have to make 1 correction. There was no falsetto in this song. Its a common mistake, coz countertenors are very rare, like 1 per generation, but thats what Bobby Hatfield was. A countertenor, who could naturally and effortlessly cover the entire tenor and soprano spectrums and even go higher than many sopranos. No falsetto, just his natural voice.
