An earliest footage of 17 year old John Frusciante from the live set of his band IKE. Missing Persons studio, Sam Fernando valley, 1987. Just a year before he joined Red Hot Chili Peppers.
All credits to Matthew Goodman who was one of the founding members of IKE and shared those priceless videos.

This is impressive for a 17 year old but you guys are really getting carried away. Sloppily noodling through a series of Van Halen licks and some whammy bar noises is pretty far from “knowing it all” or being capable of filling in for a virtuoso guitar player. This is about how well I played at that age and I wasn’t even the best guitarist in my own band.

And get it wrong most of the time. If I was lucky I might buy a guitar magazine and learn a couple of songs from the tabs that came in those mags. But even then most tabs were awfully transcribed.

It certainly seems Steve was a big influence at the time. He even has a Performance guitar very much like what Vai played at the time. The great thing is Frusciante started listening to his inner muse and developed his own language. Just like there is already a Vai, Mayer, SRV and even Frusciante, people get caught up in trying to mimic their hero’s too long and the secret is to listen to what’s in your head. It separates the men from the boys.

I was there. That kid nailed it!" There were 850 guitar players there that year, and John Frusciante was among the top 3 or 4 rock players in the school. Of course, it was hard to stand out as a rock guitarist there then, when Paul Gilbert was ever-present as an instructor at GIT at 21 years of age, and ruling the local metal scene with Racer X.”

I have to disagree man, only because there's no such thing as the "best guitarist." Music isn't measurable the way sport is, it's an art and is purely subjective. Also, I'd argue that 17-22 year old John out-plays present day John. His years of drug abuse left him without the strength in his fingers and I don't think he ever gained it fully back. You can particularly tell when it comes to bends and vibrato.

John has definitely made a huge transformation over the years, it is really cool to see this far back. I find it kinda funny that a lot of the 90s greats went through the phase of doing the cheese ball 80s hair thing before finding their musical identity (John, Maynard James Keenan, Layne Staley, to name a few).

Check out Dimebag back in the “Glam” era of Pantera - he humbles the almighty EVH. and there’s nothing wrong with the “ cheese ball hair 80’s thing” have you seen the music today? The 80’s was the best time to be a guitar player

So he was the 'guitar hero' back then. Makes sense. Because as the adult we know him now, he always says how he hates doing solos. He's been there; that's maturity right there.

This may be John. But either way, John has even stated in interviews that he was very caught up for a period of time in VH influenced shredding. And even though John developed his own personal style, he still shreds in lots of Chili Peppers songs.

As a big Frusciante and Chili Peppers fan, along with Van Halen, etc., I still watch this and think “I’m so glad the 80’s ended”. Haha. The playing is great, for sure, It’s just so weird seeing Frusciante in this 80’s setting. I just like seeing Frusciante doing what he does best.

@@Lordhumongus I was just talking about the music culture. lol. I wasn't criticizing the entire decade of life. Just was saying that the excess in 1980's hair metal and heavy metal was overwhelming. It suited some bands (I'm a giant Van Halen fan and I like bands like Motley Crue), but that just wasn't John's or the Chili Peppers thing. I'd much rather experience the chili peppers as their partially goofy, funky rock sound in the 80's and funky alt rock in the 90's than hearing them try to copy the 80's hair metal thing, because their greatest strength and contribution to the world is obviously the former.
