174. No Pressure! Setting Accumulator Pressures on my Narrowboat

I check and adjust the pressures of the accumulators fitted to my hot and cold water supplies. An accumulator helps smooth out the flow of water and reduces wear on the pump.

Hi Tim, it's not essential to have accumulators fitted but it does stop the pump from running every time you draw a small amount of water and should prevent wear on the pump. All the best, Alan

Hi Alan great to watch your vlogs. However, you do not have two accumulators, you will have one, which comes off your water pump and the other is known as an expansion tank which is by the califorier, albet they are the same tanks but they are set to two different pressures doing different jobs. You can call Jabsco who will give you these pressures dependent on your pump size, the accumulator is set 3lb below the pump cut in and the expansion tank is set to the shut off pressure of the pump.
@MyNarrowboatVenture
@MyNarrowboatVenture 3 жыл бұрын
That's very interesting Mick, as no-one has put it like that before. One tank is on the cold water feed, so comes off the pump as you say, and the other from the hot draw off (as far as I can see). I do already have the pressures you talk of, so will look further into that. Many thanks for the advice.

At the Take off end of the tank the round metal cover goes rusty internally between the rubber diaphragm and the tank causing a slow loss of air pressure. Take it apart, clean the joints of rust, use anti rust treatment then paint again when dry. Also the diaphragm can get dirty with rust and sediment.
@MyNarrowboatVenture
@MyNarrowboatVenture 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the advice, I'm not sure that's something I would want to do myself. The tank is only a couple of years old and it looks rather tricky to me. Cheers

If you have to have to check your schrader valves for a leak, just put a little watered down liquid dish soap in the valve end and watch for bubbles. Also good for checking for leaks around your gas connections - you will need a spray bottle of liquid soap and water for that one. (In the old days, checking bicycle tire valves, we would just use a little saliva to check for a bad valve). Very interesting. Makes me think I should put an accumulator in my camper/caravan.

Try just adding a "metal" cap for the Shredder Valves. Just look inside for a proper gasket. The old internal valve will then ONLY be used when the "cap" is off. The rest of the time the cap holds the pressure. As for the pressure in the bladder, you can test from a high to a low value by lowering the pressure till the pump does not run when air is "let out" of the valve for each lowering of the pressure. With this test, you can see the bladder filling. Set the level for the "Largest fill" pressure level. Or just a bit more to allow for a small leak over time. When you set the pressure very low, the pump may not run at all for small water draws from the pipes.
@MyNarrowboatVenture
@MyNarrowboatVenture 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Edward, thanks for your comment. There is already a tight fitting cap over the valve, you would have seen me unscrewing it. The pressure has to be set at 3psi below the cut-in and the pump does not run when small amounts of water are drawn. I think my accumulator probably has a diaphragm in it and not a bladder, I'm not 100% sure. Cheers

Hi Alan,I hope the day finds you well and warm. I have accumulators both at the house and the cottage as both are on wells like many homes in Canada although we call them pressure tanks. Our pumps are connected via a pressure switch with a differential pressure setting. This only starts the pumps after a certain amount of drawdown in the case of the house is about a gallon and the cottage a toilet flush(Smaller tank_) this amount is determined by the size of the pressure tank/accumulator In general this is a completely trouble free system I check the pressure usually in the spring .The house has a Jet pump which I changed about 20 years ago because the motor had burnt out and it was easier to replace both motor and pump as they come in an integral unit, I have no idea how deep the well is but most are between 70 and 100 feet. The cottage is 9ofeet deep and has a submersible pump which require no priming there the water system is drained each fall and priming a jet pump is very temperamental some springs with the Jet pump it would prime with less than a gallon other times it seemed like the lake was liable to run dry *LOL*

Interesting vlog. Getting hot water to the tap on a boat is not something I actually thought about. It certainly isn’t just a “turn on the faucet and take a hot shower” sort of thing as there are definitely steps one must take to assure the hot water heater is working and there is enough pressure to actually get the water through the water lines. Take care and looking forward to the next vlog.

Thanks Steve, I expect like most equipment in Aldi/Lidl, it will appear from time to time. I found with the van, I couldn't see the indicator on the air pump in petrol filling stations and I had a couple of instances where I was taking the air out. I much preferred when the gauge was on the air line and you took it round with you to each wheel. Keep safe.
@johnataylor3616

Hi Allen, Love watching. I hope I am going to be helpful with the following. You can only check the air pressure when the water is drained from the taps because as the pump increases pressure the air pressure in the vessel also increases. 0.5 to 0.8 is ok. There is one other point the accumulator should be white indicating fresh water (normally a stainless steel.) If painted red, it is usually indicates for heating system as it is just ordinary metal and will rust if fresh water runs through the system. Schrader valve is an ordinary bicycle tyre valve but you need the tool to remove it. The valve is about one pound, not sure the cost of the tool. Please keep up the youTube. Regards John
@MyNarrowboatVenture
@MyNarrowboatVenture 3 жыл бұрын
I appreciate what you say John and now have a valve changing kit. My accumulator is made by Zilmet in their Hy-Pro series but they only have information on white 'tanks' dated 08/2012. These are made of carbon steel. Mine is dated 09-2013 and I can find no info on it. I wasn't aware of the distinction of colours and materials. I have looked at a chandler's site and their whie tank is made of mild steel. Confusing isn't it! Cheers

Look around to find or locate a valve cover cap that has two little prongs on it , this will allow you to tighten the core just like you tighten the core on a car tire. The thing you are seeking is like a 3mm round screw driver with a cross cut grove like a flat bladed screw. This fits around the core to tighten,.A replacement core will be about 5 pence and where you get them at the tire shop will have the tool as well. Get the tool and put it in your tool box for future valve core repair on any related valve. Cores are usually the same except for the length on any tire from bicycle to truck. lol Unless you own a HUMMER , then you and your tires are screwed. lolol good luck and CHEERS
