My Jabsco water pump has been playing up for some while, cutting 'in and out' later than it should and the pressure hasn't been too good. On investigation, I found the pump was leaking, so decided to replace it. Please take a look, as I not only replace the pump but also fit an inline ball valve.

When you posted this video, I was on a boat which the previous week, we had problems with the water pump and ended up replacing it. A tip for anyone replacing their Jabsco water pump but keeping the original push-in-and-lock connectors into the pump - these have O-rings to seal, and over time they become hard and no longer properly seal. We had this problem not only on the pump but also the accumulator that used the same fittings. I ended up swapping the O-rings from the packs that came with the new pump onto the older fittings we had (it was the simplest solution.) Care is needed when doing that - use a plastic implement with no sharp edges to ease the new O-rings off the fittings so you don't score them and damage their ability to seal. I had a multi-tool with a plastic tooth-pick which did the job nicely. We had no further leaks for the remainder of the trip, although we had a week of water finding its way from the bow to the stern end of the cabin bilge. The boat I've just bought has the same model of pump on it as well - I'm keeping my fingers crossed, and I already have a spare pump as a reserve!

Thanks for the advice Russell. My new Jabsco pump came with new push and lock fittings, so I used those. Cheers

Thanks Greg but I'm not so certain, as several viewers have cast doubt about the excess amount of PTFE tape used to make the joints watertight, the problem being the larger internal diameter of the new pipe not being a snug fit. Cheers

Alan Good call to put a shut off valve on the inlet side of the pump 👍🏻. My thoughts on the hose connections!! Liquid Teflon instead of the tape on the barb fitting, put two jubilees (hose clamps) over the hose,push the hose on,tighten one hose clamp on the left side and then the other 180 degrees on the other side. Hope that makes sense! Glad you met Jasmine,life is better when you can enjoy it with someone! Not that you needed help in the smiling department. Look forward to seeing you two share your adventures together. Cheers Tim 🇨🇦

Hi Tim, thanks for your suggestion, I do understand what you’re suggesting but I’ve never heard of Liquid Teflon. I felt let down by the tails and the larger diameter pipe, which was a poor fit. Thanks for your good wishes, all the best Alan

I built a large home and used a piping that closely resembles what you were dealing with. Here in the US we call it Pex piping and a special clamp is used that, in my opinion will never allow water to leak. It does require a special tool ( about $75 US) in my opinion, that stiff piping you used will probable eventually leak when you are using a “Jubilee clamp” (worm drive clamp here).
@MyNarrowboatVenture
@MyNarrowboatVenture 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnwright9622 The blue pipe I used is flexible. The problem was that its internal diameter was too large for the fittings, all purchased from a chandlers, so disappointing. The pipe should have been a snug fit over the tails but wasn’t hence the need for packing it out, to tighten the jubilee clip too.

Good vlog Alan, and a good example of how boats keep you on your feet! Its good your pump has flexible hoses on it to stop vibration. Did this myself a while ago - put a cheap tin foil baking tray underneath it so i could see any leaks and also got a cheap flood detector to alert me. Now you have it sorted buy some more pipe with a smaller ID and a tad more flexible if possible. The pipe should be a tight fit and watertight without the clip & the clip is just for security, BTW buy the best quality clips you can. Looking at the room you have for the pump I would be looking to change the layout by turning it to run bow to stern (90 degree turn) and just use longer pipes (you have the room) with elbows to change pipe direction where needed.

I am not criticizing your job you did well with what you had to work with, but over here when one of those pumps goes out it is usually the inereds and we can replace the rubber flaps and such in a rebuild kit , altho the thread fittings could have been installed and then used the push fittings to put it in place.rather then the push first then threads. in this way the pump can be removed without unscrewing anything. I know you wanted to replace the rest of the gubbins but the pump itself is designed to be a pop out and pop in unit. My problem is not with you, it is with the suppliers , instead of selling the consumer rebuild kits they sell only the new pumps or replacement pumps. which makes the entire unit disposable. This not just with pumps it is with EVERYTHING. Sorry just ranting about the people that design this crap. If things are being made in the good from the start, then we would not need to replace them in the first place. CCHHEERRSSSSS and where is the cheese topped roles these days, did they stop being made as well. LOLOL ?????
