It’s great to see that Sam hits the nails on the head with your high standards and morale values, and so articulately worded too. It my words Sam can create a professional rapport with people with ease. So in layman’s terms he doesn’t treat potential cunts like cunts, even if they are cunts….

Really good story Sam,had a similar funeral escort myself, coming out of the crem. Chapel the prisoners friends wanted us to take him to the pub. The prisoner insisted we get in the van and off we went. As we were driving away the prisoner suggested to me that he didn’t want to go for a drink with his friends because they were a bunch of alcoholics. My mate and I nearly fell out of the van laughing.

Orreight! Really appreciate your insights as a screw. As a paramedic who ended up working in Manchester and Salford I've been in Strangeways and Forest Bank many times, and had prison officers accompany me in the ambulance to Salford Royal or North Manchester General. Now, this didn't happen to me but I was working that night. You may have heard about the incident. A con got attacked one night in Forest Bank. The prison nurse wanted him to go to hospital so an ambulance was dispatched. It was crewed by two young females. The con was double cuffed in the back, on the stretcher, paramedic in the back, two screws in the back, screw in the front passenger seat and the EMT was driving. They got about halfway up the road when cars came out of side junctions and blocked the ambulance in. Now, I like to think if I'd been driving I'd be using a 5 ton ambulance as a battering ram but I've never been in that situation. Anyway, some bloke in a bally put the windscreen in with a bat whilst the other lot ripped into the back of the ambulance and threatened the screws to let the con go. It was all a set up, he'd got a mate to bash him up so his mates outside could ambush the ambulance. He was looking at 20 years and couldn't face doing it. He ended up disappearing and my colleagues were a bit traumatised as you can imagine. They found the bloke eventually in Ireland I think, he'd hanged himself. This was about 10 years ago. A'll si thi!

Did you ever witness any good/funny moments in the prison? 2 years ago, while I was in Holme House for a brief spell. 1 lad was playing his music and the song Cha Cha slide by DJ Casper, one lad started dancing and doing the moves, then all of the sudden around 40 of us out of the 60 on the wing all joined in along with a couple of the staff. It was not long before Christmas 2019. It was one of those moments we sort of forgot where we were and the staff let us have an extended association and opened up the yard if we wanted to pop out for a bit fresh air.

Another great story pal....I've only done a little stretch in detention centre in 1984 (the short sharp shock) and but for 2 screws in there my life could have been so different.. one was the pt instructor Mr Bell a real hard twat that hated police from getting his face caved in playing rugby against the police....but a really top top bloke respected him loads....and the other was the kitchen gaffer (whose name I can't remember) but taught me how to cook and another top top bloke and it's pissing me off I can't respect him properly by remembering his name!!! But the moral to the story is it don't matter what situation your in there's proper good people that leave an impression on your life, and these two people did this for me 100% without a doubt....I'm now 55yr old own my own house and business and I put it down to these two bloke's that made me realise the other road is much better than the one I was on!!! Si thee.

I get ya mate. Same here…I expected the short sharp shock but I’d done a sec 18 on a bully and got a detained. There was one SO who sort of interviewed me when I went on the wing, asking where I was from etc. turned out he’d lived in the next street I grew up on and knew my dad! I was the only inmate ever, to go down the block and come back and get back on the servery! One of the other decent officers said he’d been mr S for 11 yrs and never seen anyone blocked get a top job back. I never him for anything…I just know the guy could see something I couldn’t. I only went back a few years later for a few weeks, that was 35 yrs ago and like you I turned it around! Good luck pal

Really enjoying your videos mate. I wanted to ask you for your opinion on the idea that many of the guys at the top of the criminal hierarchy - the ones that stay around for many years and never seem to get into trouble - tend to be giving info to the law? Basically, there is an idea that you can't get to a high level without having a relationship with the police (or the NCA or MI5 in some cases), snitching and/or having police in your pocket because you have something on them. This is why there are high profile nonces that get away with their horrible activities but the same goes, so I hear, for certain high up crooks involved in drugs, prostitution and other endeavours. Anyway, respect and I'd love to hear your thoughts on this, based on what you've learnt over the years.

You know your stuff Ozzie. I've been researching similar stuff lately. As you say, the police might technically have someone registered as an 'informant', but in reality it just means that they are their friend and associate.

@@RealPorridgePodcast Care to expand? Is it that simple? I see guys driving around in expensive cars with personalised number plates, who own property and have all kinds of business interests, yet the whole community know that they control the drugs here, and they have been going for many years. Does your comment mean that this makes it easier to keep some kind of peace? Again, really appreciate your work!

Mother sounds pure class. Spitting venom and filthy abuse in chapel grounds at her husband's funeral. Kind of sums everything up really. I bet one main reason he was inside had nothing to do with the fine upbringing and the good example on how to live your life he received whilst being nurtured by her throughout his formative years.

The service lost a good un in you Sam. There are screws, and there are human beings. You are def in the latter category. Decent screws, the service usually finds a way to shoot themselves in the foot and lose decent blokes, same here in New Zealand. You would be fine as a screw here, there are a lot of ex squaddies from the UK who work the prisons here and they are by and large the most popular cos they have lived in close confines with the guys from their unit and so have a rough idea how to treat boob-heads, usually funny buggers too I've noticed. I saw one in a hardware store once, he knew me well from the nick and went hunting with an extended family member. He bought two of those push button doorlocks off me that day, I asked him what he was there for and they were about $250.00 back then, they are now fucken $500.00 each. He was ex Brit Army and often started his shift by coming in the wing and saying loudly, "Money for fooking jam this, money for fucken jam!" He died 5 years ago the poor bastard, Sykes was his name so natch we called him Eric, his Mrs was the secretary in the office and even she called him Eric. :) RIP Eric. For what its worth, you were extremely popular with we Boob-Heads and the service lost a good man when he passed.
