This week I wanted to share 18 things all foreigners will miss about England - myself included! After living in England for 4 years, I've since returned home to Canada and there's a lot of English stuff I miss. Having a pint in a pub garden, anyone??

Hey! I'm Alanna - a twenty-something documenting my life as a Canadian living in England.
I share the ups and downs of an expat living abroad and what it's really like living in the UK. It's not always easy, but there's been so many wonderful experiences, too. I post a KZfaq video every Tuesday and an additional video every Saturday on my Patreon account. I also livestream every Wednesday and Sunday at 6:30pm GMT on Twitch.

Canadians have always felt like our closest cousins, our North American Colonies who managed not to commit treason with our oldest enemies. But then, that's because in my case they literally are. And next time someone comments, remind them (because it's the period in history where their minds are still stuck) it was the Canadian forces, not Dad's Army, who really first defended the South Coast in WW2 (from the very end of 1939!). They also protected the West Indies and Hong Kong for us. Canada trained most of our pilots, built our vehicles, supplied the rifles for the Home Guard, fed the home country and resupplied us after Dunkirk. They sacrificed themselves bravely at Dieppe to learn lessons for the later invasion (and we now know was partly to get an Enigma machine) and had to themselves one of the 5 beaches at D-Day. Along with India, but more directly in terms of the home islands, we owe a massive debt to Canada. Arguably greater than any other. You are the main reason Churchill was able to say we could fight on "alone" in 1940. Or you could just say, "you'd be speaking German if it wasn't for us", and unlike the USA, it would be true 😀

Trains in England are pricey if you're going long distance but you can make them cheaper with railcards if youre going to use them often enough. When I had a young person's Railcard (under 25s) I made back the money I spent on it and still made a saving on my first journey!! Now i live in Ireland and the trains are cheaper to use but there aren't enough stations or trains running to use all the time unless you're going between major cities. I miss the convenience of tiny stations in the UK like Maesteg and Sandgate. When I lived in rural areas like that, it was cheaper, faster and more convenient than a bus.

I spent some time in the States and tried their trains had to make a journey across a couple of States with one change along the way. I shall never complain about British Trains ever again. Though you get plenty of space in the carriages the journey speeds can be soooooooooooo slow.

Browsing around U Tube I came across this young ladies page, which I hadn't seen previously and I was impressed with her style and candor . So I looked at some of her other pages. One that really impressed me was the one where she openly tackled the comments which were totally rude and ignorant which attacked her appearance and persona. She handled these brilliantly by reducing those morons to be no better than scum. I wish her all the happiness and success in her life and and hope she soon gets her UK visa. We need more people like her in the UK and get rid of the sort of ignorant characters that insulted her. Stuart Green.

I'm an ex-pat Brit living in Switzerland (soon 31 years!) and what you said brought me to tears. I compartmentalize a lot of the things I miss and shut them away where they don't hurt. But you brought so much back in one fell swoop that it overwhelmed me. 99.9% of the time as an ex-pat you're concentrating on all the positive things around you and not what you miss. What struck me was your warm-hearted openness and quieter, deeper appreciation of things English. You are certainly an enrichment for the people around you. I have 3 English-speaking Swiss-British daughters in their twenties who haven't lived in England (yet). One has just returned from a year in Ireland and I shall send them the link to this video. I do hope you make it back to England. Fingers crossed... All the best, Rob in Switzerland.

You don't have to have lived in the UK for four years to have things that you miss about the country. I've spent only five weeks there, and I have my own list -- albeit smaller than yours. I will only list my #1 "miss": Talking with the British people -- on the pavement, in a restaurant, in a pub and, yes, even on the Tube (talking on the Tube? Horrors!). Because I was there alone, I made it a point to seek out conversations whenever possible. I've had so many great conversations with the Brits that I cherish to this day. Even Brexit discussions. No arguments, just exchanges of opinions. Very educational for me to hear these things from a British point of view as opposed to CNN or BBC. Even commuters on the Tube were engaging with me. Imagine that.

Hope you get back soon - and when you do you should come to St.Albans ("Snorbins", it's pronounced here) where we have a cathedral containing building materials from each of the last 20 centuries, bits of Roman buildings, lots of pubs (used to be more per person than anywhere - not sure if it's still true), street markets, museums, and lots of stuff to explore. And eat and drink :-) I think you'll like it. (I've been to Toronto a couple of times - the drivers are *crazy* - even worse than in Manhatten!)

And about historical sites - my American family found it hard to understand that there is always a "before". So the Medieval church was built on a Roman site which was a Bronze age stone circle before that.. and so it goes on. I was teaching English to overseas students when one asked about Cockney Rhyming Slang. I told them a few examples and they went off to try it - they came back amazed there was this hidden language that everyone else understood. And finally, I'm so happy you got to see my hometown of Brighton. All the best, Pete

Pub gardens are the best, especially at this time of year. Imagine sipping a nice crisp pint in the warm sun, with some rando's beautiful border collie basking at your feet. You hear the smooth hum of a small propeller aeroplane in the distance, probably coming into land at the local airfield a few miles away. Meanwhile the newborn ducklings are waddling behind their mother as she potters around the river bank... A light breeze blows and a couple of the ducklings topple over but soon hop up and scramble back in line. Ah, and look, here comes the burger and chips you ordered...

You would also be in historical heaven in Wales with its dozens and dozens of castles. In fact I live right next door to one in North Wales and it is one of the first things I see when I wake up and open my bedroom curtains, and I feel so privileged to see it out of the window. Literally, I could throw a tennis ball out of my window and it would land in the castle's moat! It was built in the 13th Century and has a 'life' of its own, depending on the time of day or night and weather. It can be serene on a beautiful summer's day, ethereal and haunting as it is lit by the full moon and under the stars or menacing looking as it is silhouetted by a stormy night and lightning, resembling something out of a Hammer Horror film!

The British road system (before 1955) is based on either the Roman road system... (at least 1700 years old) or on paths taken by farmers walking livestock to and from their farms to villages and towns , to take them to market. .... this is why many minor roads in England twist and turn so much.
