If you have a 2018+ Ford Mustang GT, then you've probably heard about the benefits of porting your stock intake manifold. And given that individuals in the community claim anywhere from 5-20hp at the wheels with porting alone, it's a safe bet that it does SOMETHING, right? In this video, we answer that exact question in a controlled dyno test!

i was first to run the 18 intake when it was released to the public on my 14 gt-tuned by tony gonyon as well unported{video of the run is on my video list}-made 435 and if i recall 415 torque through stock headers and an a6-the car in this video is making amazing power for sure!

Really good vid! I actually ordered an 18 manifold, cold air, 91 and 93 tune + device by vmp performance. They used to offer the porting, but they no longer do that. I was considering to do that once I get the parts, but I might as well end up not doing it after watching this vid. My mustang is a v8 2016

Yep, we'd say just install it as-is! Significant gains on a Gen-II 5.0L.

Stock cam motors: keep/run the 2018+ Gen 3 manifold. Aftermarket cams to demand more airflow and rpm? Port the intake if you can. 1) thank you all for this testing and video. 2) this goes to show how incredibly well engineered the 2018+ manifold is, box stock. 👏

The reason why you didn't see any gains is because the stock 2018 Mustang gt intake manifold flow 360-370cfm average runner flow and with a mild combo like a cai and some headers is not enough to use the extra cfm from the manifold porting. In essence at that hp level the manifold was not the bottleneck. To see the real gains from porting from the manifold you need to have a motor that can make 550whp and up.

Our guess would be, no one is intentionally misleading their customers. We truly believe the claims out there are simply due to variables not being controlled. It's great to have this data!

Not true because the motors airflow demands was not high enough to use the extra cfm from the porting. The manifold was not the bottleneck on that mild motor. At higher hp levels you will see a big difference

Why didn't you retune the car along with doing imrc lockout? no wonder you didn't see any power gain.

If I had one of these, first thing Id do is a 4.30 gear perfect for an engine that revs. Musta done a 10 spd for EPA, theres simply no need for one.

I think gains (or not) depends because manifolds have different imperfections and smoothing it out makes some difference. Some i believe might be little more shifted on connection points creating almost none or bigger lip making it little bit better or worse from the factory. As you said 5 to 20hp on car with over 400hp is not major difference. Also who and how ported might make difference, if for example runners are not balanced in shape and size as it should it might be even worse than factory. Finish smoother or rougher might also contribute to result. Too many factors to measure over just small gain.

Thanks for the video! I was tempted to get my intake manifold port matched with my 90mm TB and spacer and intake tube setup, but I'm not sure it'll do much. I know these cars love to breathe, but I'm thinking I may have wasted money now since I don't see many folks running either of these parts. At the time it was a killer deal though lol

got a ported boss 302 mani and a 95mm on my fbo e85 gt with the t 10r80. car makes 503 wheel. stock ported mani would make decent gains as long as its paired with good mods and most of all a great tune.

I ported mine myself, however I wouldn't pay someone to do it for me. I figured since I already have the tools for it, I may as well port it before installing it and having it tuned. Worst that could happen is the lost time it takes to port it.

Is tunning required when porting the manifold??? If you do lock outs on the manifold would it need to be re tuned?

Lockouts and port yes , always when something messes with your air fuel mix you need a tune

No, however the gains are minimal. And yes, for the lock outs question, however we do not defeat any emissions equipment.

Wow, this goes against every other video I’ve watched on porting the manifold. Could e85 have something to do with it. No one is on pump gas in these cars these days, at least I’m my area.

I think its because most people in the videos are going from a 15-17 stock intake manifold to a 18+. This video is comparing an 21 mustang gt with the stock 18+ manifold to a ported 18+.

Anyone who knows cars knows that any intake work is worthless without head and exhaust work. Also, that you aren't making any more power unless you alter internals. Any gains seen are just power freed up from airflow, and less weight on the rotating assembly, that transfers to the wheels.. Still you only free up power... not gain it. FI is the only way to make more power.

There are a lot of variables at play. We did our testing as close as possible to rule out the variable of atmosphere.

I see in your comments you said you don’t need a tune with a ported intake manifold, but even on the product pages they say you are required to retune. I don’t understand where you are understanding a retiñe isn’t required

Its beacuse if guys dont retune (thats where any gains may be) they would be pissed thier $ spent on porting was a waste.

From reading comments, it did. How others insist this cant be true is hilarious. Most bolt ons are a waste of cash gotta go inside or do a power adder. Gears is always a good bang for buck

Op is correct, waste of time in most cases. Mfr will say anything to sell parts Most bolt ons w/different cars I found 0 or close to 0 gain on dyno and 1/4 mi DIg inside the engine is where the gains are but ford did a great job on these as is. Meaning they did the hot rodding for us

Typical results, most stock manifolds are optimized as is, If there was more power to be had there the factory woulda done it . Smoothing, or changing finishes wont get you a bit of gain either. Toomany places making claims when most times its from the tuning. Ported a ton of plastic intakes unless youre making big power save your money, same with the TB

I mean, you have to actually tune the car to make more power… these coyotes don’t just make more power on their own. My car made 0HP gains with my cold air intake and headers until we tuned it.

This video is very disingenuous…. You will never see the full potential of a ported manifold with the STOCK throttle body and no tuning tweaks. Put an 85mm throttle body on it and make the proper tune changes in a controlled environment and I will bet that it will provide good gains. You guys can fool these novice enthusiasts, but not me. Nothing you can say to me about performance modifications will go over my head. Try me if you want and watch my response will truth and logic.
