Back about 1987, I visited the old Springfield Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts. Walking into that museum one sees hundreds of mint-condition Springfield rifled muskets lining the wall. It was a religious experience that still touches me.

I visited the Tower of London a wee bit 15 years ago and they had several rooms where most of the walls all were lined with land pattern Brown Bess smoothbore muskets, 3 band Enfield rifled muskets, Snider Enfield`s (cartridge converted Enfield rifled muskets), Martini Henry`s (the next step up from the Snider`s) and so forth. An incremental step-back in time sort of armory, simply astonishing.

Crazy the history with this rifle. It. It just looks like an old hunting rifle out of someone's grandpa's closet, but that rifle has been fired in anger by a scared young man, it has taken American lives, one mother got to see her son home, while one on the other side of this country, received a letter and a folded flag...all as an effect of how that rifle was fired. Its just wood and steel, but the man on the back can change the world.

Yep, and since they were desirable battle field pick-ups, there's no way to know on which side it saw the most service. Better chance that it served on the Union side, but then again, it could have been "dropped' in an early engagement in 1864 and then carried by a Reb throughout the rest of the war. IF only it could talk.

I own an M1842 smoothbore musket made in 1846. Had it as a wall hangar for a number of years. It’s in really excellent shape...no corrosion pitting on any of the metal surfaces. Under the tutelage of a black powder expert, I decided to take it down and shoot it last weekend. What a spectacular and truly immersive experience! Not at all like modern weapons where you pound off a few hundred rounds in 10 or 15 minutes then head home. This is all about taking taking your time and enjoying the history behind the firearm and the technique involved in handling it. You appreciate every shot as an individual event. By the way, great video....as always. Thanks!

What's amazing is these old Springfields were robustly overbuilt for harsh military use-yet their accuracy was amazing for a mass produced, early industrial age weapon. Just holding the .577 caliber slug in my hand for my 1853 Enfield reproduction gave me chills the first time I loaded it as I couldn't even fathom being hit by one of these. Reading accounts of veterans many stated that they would advance under fire so heavy that the men would instinctively shrug their shoulders and turn their bodies halfway as if walking against a strong wind. Incredibly brave men that would march knowingly into a maelstrom of lead and solid shot from cannons. Even more amazing that a little field could change hands 5 or 6 times as one side would fall back, rally, and then attack again. The next day the pickets on both sides would become friendly again like 'No hard feelings Billy Yank'. 'Good fight you guys put up yesterday Johnny Reb.'

it's worse in Canada. I could have this shipped to my door because it's made prior to 1898. but, I could also have a sporting flintlock made circa 2016 shipped to my door. because Flintlocks are considered antiques REGARDLESS OF AGE and therefore do not require a PAL license. so in Canada, an airgun powerful enough to kill a rabbit needs a gun license, but a pre-1898 muzzle loader or any flintlock, matchlock or wheel lock rifle (but not pistol!) doesn't.

The 1863 .58 caliber Springfield rifle also saw action and use during the Modoc Indian War (1872-1873) at the Lava Beds south of Tulelake, Califronia. Bear in mind this is nearly a decade after the Civil War ended in 1865. During this era in American history there was extensive immigration of settlers and pioneers traveling out West. Many were poor immigrants, while others were prospectors (miners), homesteaders, farmers, stockman, town folk, etc. The 1863 Springfield, like most Civil War surplus weapons, glutted the market. It was simple economics for many, as Civil War surplus smallarms were readily available, affordable, and not to difficult to obtain. A rifle or shotgun via a covered wagon along the Oregon or Applegate Trail would have been as common as a plow, butter churn, spinning wheel, flat iron, etc. Lest people today get the impression this era was romantic, perish the thought! Communithy folk experienced many hardships, challenges, and difficulties which today are taken way to much for granted. Pestilence such as smallpox, cholera, measles, were deadly! In fact, pestilence probably took more human life than bullets and buckshot. For many it was a hard life. -----James A. "Jim" Farmer Ashland, Oregon

In 1948 I bought, from a movie supply company, an 1864 Springfield in superb condition with the original bayonet and sling for $15.00. It had a nickel plated barrel and all the stamped armory identification on the stock. It was a rifled barrel in excellent condition and shot a 50-70 rimfire cartridge, I was able to buy ten of them. I never fired the rifle, I wanted it to remain in prime condition. I later found that it was the second Allen conversion from a cap and ball to a trapdoor cartridge rifle. Last year I put it for auction at Rock Island Auction company and it sold for $1750.00.

What you have there is an 1863 type 1. They had the bands with screws. The '63 type 2 went back to the bands with the springs like the '61 did. Nice piece in great condition. The clamping band on the bayonet twists 90 deg. to hold the bayonet on the sight / lug when fixed. You are correct on the case hardening and blue points you mentioned.

The reason that some folks leave the cap in place while loading is to prevent a through draft from forming, and possibly causing any hot residue from flaring up as the new charge is loaded, and rammed. (In Artillery this is referred to as serving the vent. ) The point of this is to prevent accidental firing when loading.
@hickok45
@hickok45 8 жыл бұрын
Yep, I understand the point of it, but I just don't necessarily agree with it. If there are any embers down there just waiting for a little oxygen, I'd rather let them have it and burn themselves out before I start pouring powder down the barrel.

Considering that the Prussian Dreyse needle rifle entered mass production as early as 1840 it seems strange that other nations continued to design new muzzle loaders more than 20 years later.
@frankperkin124
@frankperkin124 5 жыл бұрын
The Dreyse was accepted for service in 1841, but was really not perfected until the 1850's. But you are correct that the Prussians were way ahead of the rest of the world. The US Army entered the Mexican war in 1846 primarily armed with flintlock muskets, By the early 1860s, the needle gun was rendered obsolete by cartridge firearms. That didn't stop the French from developing a needle gun at the same time.

if there ever IS a second one, this thing would be borderline useless. Not entirely useless, but not useful for the sort of fighting honest folks would want to do. this is the sort of rifle that is only useful against people that either can't shoot back any faster.... or can't shoot back at all.... Most of the history buffs who'd own one would find that implication appaling, at least I'd hope.

Found one in a LGS today, 1862 dated, put it on layaway. Vids like this are very instructive, thanks Mr 45! The shop also had a very nice Trapdoor, both are "attic fresh", surface rust, I hope it isn't a sin to go over the steel parts with 0000 steel wool and oil, it isn't clean-up of battlefield grit etc but years of indoor neglect I hope to correct. The wood on both is quite good, sharp cartouches and unit markings. The Trapdoor will be going home with me within a month also.

I can imagine some lunatic joining a reenactment and loading lead balls into their cartridge. It would be good for them because nobody would know who did it and it would take a while to figure out that someone even did it. "Is that real blood or is this guy just really into this?"

Jo Wh the people around that person would know, there is a big difference in the sound of fire black powder blanks and firing an actual projectile.

It must have been really annoying to use that thing. Long, heavy, and takes like 30 seconds to reload after each shot. If I was fighting in the American Civil War, I'd be tempted to just use a Revolving Carbine.

AJW No you wouldn't, the government would not give you a revolver unless you are an officer or a cavalry man. And they would not give you a henrry because 1) they were not produce a lot therefore not a lot of units had it.

The first Springfields were smooth bore muskets. It was cheaper to send them back to the factory to have them re-barreled than to have new models built as rifles. So the name is correct. During the war, the South actually sent flintlock muskets back to have rifle barrels installed, but kept the flintlock.

Great video. You mentioned the trapdoor. I have an 1863 Springfield that was converted to a trapdoor after the war. Has been in the family since the late 1800s. Chambered in 45-70

Hickock, with regards to the bayonet on the '63 and '61 variants, they came with a "locking ring." Your observation that you couldn't see the front sight will be mitigated once you affix the bayonet, and once the front sight lug is passed beyond the ring, rotate the ring so that the bayonet is locked in place and the bayonet ring housing that once blocked your view will be to the side, allowing you to view your front sight! Without the rotating bayonet locking ring this bayonet is little more than the revolutionary war era socket bayonet that had no ring at all! Happy shooting.

We had an 1863 [+ $5 upgrade] hanging over our fireplace but it was stolen in a rash of break-ins back in 65'. I was 8 and remember playing with it. For an 8 year old, it was really heavy.

This is an awesome video, and perfect timing for me. Just last Sunday, I shot a black powder rifle for the first time -it was a requirement for me to get my hunter safety course certification. As soon as I fired it, I fell in love with it!! We actually shot the round ball with a lubricated patch, not the minnie ball, but now, all I can think about is getting a black powder rifle for myself.

Thanks very much for this video. I enjoyed it. You mentioned briefly about an ember left in the barrel & I remember being at at 4th of July celebration here at Provo Utah in the 1970's when some guys were shooting a large cannon with just powder. They were shooting it fast as they could over & over & on one shot they put the powder in the barrel & the poor guy ramming the load lost both his arms at the elbow when an ember set the new powder load off & shot out the ram rod. That was in front of a few thousand people. Pretty sad.

I’m using this as well as other references so I can create a (slightly) historically accurate replica of a 1861 Rifle that I set as a project for myself during the summer (as of 6/5/2021). And as of 6/5/21, it is looking as similar to the one you’re showing here! So thanks! ^^

Hi, old friend, this was absolutely superb as are all of your videos. I should love to see you have a go with the Baker Rifle as used by the Rifle Regiment in the Iberian campaigns and elsewhere in the Napoleonic Wars, and as are immortalized in Bernard Cornwell's series of novels about the career of Richard Sharpe. I have seen Bakers in the Royal War Museum and have see the colours of the Rifle Regiment at Winchester, but I think you would bring a beautiful perspective to this grand weapon if you were to obtain, shoot one, and comment on it. Cheers, and please carry on. I cannot express how much pleasure your videos have given me.
