These are finally for sale now! www.handtoolrescue.com/produc...
In this video I reproduce an antique wrench / spanner that was originally patented in 1879 by Charles Billings. These style wrenches were first used mainly on bicycles, but eventually made their way into the glove compartment of very early cars.
This style wrench was also commonly made by apprentice machinists as part of a test, since multiple skills are needed to produce it.
The wrenches were originally made of "Norway Iron", which is a type of steel that has a slightly higher carbon content than wrought iron. I decided to go with 44W/A36 steel for this recreation, for this reason.
The wrench blanks were cut by a laser out of 1/2in thick steel and then machined to match the originals as close as possible. I thought adding a brass adjuster would make a neat variation on the original, as well.
I had a lot of fun getting this wrench made, but it was also a tremendous amount of work.
I would like to that the patrons on Patreon for supporting this adventure as well as Colonel & Sons Machine Works for their incredible efforts machining these wrenches. You can contact them at yxecnc@gmail.com.

I've never watched this until now, but I really am glad of the effort that went in to making the blanks as nice as I could for you. Was nice to remember good times on the 3030. Was also nice to see the extreme care and craftsmanship going into finishing them.

Important Technique Information: A forgotten trick (unless you were taught by a grandfather who used these a hundred years ago) for increasing the strength of the wrench: Place a nut of the same size as you are removing into the "opposite-side-jaw", that will transfer much of the force directly to the frame and not through the threaded post. That back overhang is there for important reasons, including the right angle turning that was shown in the video.
@sriyantra1939

Directly from the frame not from threaded...... tech. Point

@@MrSpiritmonger imagine you're trying to remove a jammed 5/8" nut - you tighten up your wrench onto the nut, but before fully tightening it, you place a second spare 5/8" nut in the back slot of the 1879 wrench. This effectively bolsters the head of the wrench against pivoting open, giving you a more stable grip on the stuck nut.

Not only are these wrenches affordable, but they offer MANY advantages over a regular adjustable wrench and for nuts under half an inch, I'd reach for this wrench over any other adjustable ANY day. Of course a box wrench/socket is still always better.

i dont know, buying a good quality wrench of the same size for 15$ or paying almost 75$ for this one shipped. also you can see him filing into his wrench like it was nothing. this prove very low hardness material has a proper tool steel will not be affected by a normal file.

Redlock I think he could be right...I distinctly remember my grandmother whispering to my mother refer to her father (a proper British Victorian type chap) as a laser cranker well she pronounced it more like layzi cranker...so I can (possibly) back this up with genuine undocumented family hearsay. I knew great Granddad was a good man, every one else described him as a layabout!! Good evening from the UK Charlie

Wow. I'll be honest and had seen the prices of these weeks ago. I was shocked because I thought you'd sourced them from China and were bumping the price right up - how wrong I was!! Now, I've just seen this video and I'm impressed. You're using local shops and local jobs to make them and that for me is awesome. Thank you so much for going down the route with better morals When I get some cash saved up I'll be buying one. Why? Well it's because you've gone about this the right way dude. Like many, I discovered this on AvE's channel. I've never given those old style wrenches a second glance since most I've seen have been abused and better suited as a hammer. Looking at this, the work put into the construction, and its superiority over a standard adjustable wrench, has me thinking. This would be a perfect addition to my 1928 South Bend lathe. There may be a set in my future.

Beautiful work! The original King Dick "fish" wrench has two additional parts yours does not have: a thrust spring and a washer in a recess in the bottom of the knurled thumb wheel. This keeps the thumb wheel tight against the top of its cutout and prevents the tool from rattling.

If I buy a $20 item from the US I can end up paying an extra $50 for shipping and brokerage fees. If I buy the same thing direct from China I get it for $10 with free shipping and it gets delivered to my door. So much for NAFTA for everyman!

I was just looking the originals up on eBay after watching your bandsaw rescue with Jimmy. I definitely will order two. Thank you so much for making these. They are by far one of the best adjustable wrenches.

Shipped in bulk to the US, not individually. Could be workable if there is sufficient demand and a willing partner stateside.

it's really incredible, I never thought I would see a tool like this again, I have a similar one that was my grandfather's, my father called the French key because of its shape, he always told me that really this tool had more practicality than a key English, besides having a better footprint than other type keys, thank you very much for that channel, great work!

Found two of these specimens in Durban South Africa at two separate flea markets. First one similar to yours dated 1945 appears to be standard issue to Ford vehicle of the same time slot, strange "laminated/ riveted fabrication. Second smaller version (half the size of the first) labelled "Made in England"...solid steel construction. Ergonomically amazing. Thank you for sharing your resurrection exercise. Good luck
