4 жыл бұрын

I remake a wrench from an 1883 patent by Fredrick H. Seymour. This video is a first in a series of videos I hope to continue making.
This wrench patent was applied for at a time when it seemed like everyone and their mother had an idea about how to make the best wrench. Mr. Seymour did not explain what advantages his wrench design has, but I can assume they were designed for ease of production as drop-forging methods left more finishing work on each piece. I am fairly sure drop-forging wrenches eventually won the great wrench wars of old.
This project was a lot of fun and was fairly simple and straightforward to remake. The most difficult part to make was the lower jaw, but luckily I have access to a mill for that. I case-hardened the entire wrench with some Cherry Red compound. It leaves a very thin layer (a few thousands of an inch) of hardened steel on the surface. I do not know if the original was case-hardened at all or how deep it would be if it was.
You can see the original patent here: patents.google.com/patent/US2...
A similar design was put into production by the Capitol Mfg. Co of Chicago, IL and had different variations and improvements which can be seen here: www.datamp.org/images/13766-3.jpg
Some variations did not even include a twist in the handle.
The design in this patent definitely makes it very easy to think of how to make a wrench with limited tools. You can see a version of this design made in a way that could be very easily made at home: imgur.com/a/tUqBt9S
Wrenches are now for sale at www.handtoolrescue.com

@@poop6d9 And like Waldo, he pops up in the most unexpected places. After all, HTR restores tools and AVE tears them apart (and sometimes a new A hole ie the Juicero). The dichotomy presented here is rather disturbing. Perhaps AVE is passing by for some scookum "puttin er back together" lessons. Then again i am probably reading too much into it. Who knows. Watching these guys is better than a hobby. You don't need tools, you dont get dirty and you dont have your significant other giving you grief about it. They make it feel like you are in the workshop with them. It's a rare talent they have and much appreciated that they share it.

Eric that was a great basic wrench for not having plans or elaborate machinery thumbs up on a decent wrench in a short time period! If you haven’t seen Mr Pete version of a similar type of wrench,it took 10 episodes completion. His was called a drill press wrench which could be fastened to the drill press table and swivel to reach any position needed, if on the next version of yours, all it would take is a bushing at the base of the wrench which would help keeping that end round all serve as a mounting hole to allow attachment to the table! Again a great video.

I have a hunch that the twist on the handle was intentionally left open as it was drawn as a means of limiting leverage and preventing over-torquing. You feel the spring in the handle start to give, you know your bolt is tight and move to the next one. The type of steel you use and the length could make it a 50 ft lb wrench, or a 60 ft lb wrench. Super cheap and easy torque wrenches for the 1800's? Yes please.

I saw an original example of this in the UK, at a national trust museum called Finch Foundry in Devon, apparently it was what an apprentice would have made during their training according to the tour guide, immediately thought that's a good HTR thing to make and you have already done it.
