Summary:
The video discusses the earliest football plays, formations, and rule changes between 1884 to 1894 in American football. It starts by explaining the state of American football in 1890, highlighting how rule changes made it different from rugby, such as the establishment of the system of downs and the concept of possession. Two more rules were established in 1890: tackling below the waist and blocking in front of a ball carrier.
The V Trick, the original wedge play and forerunner of mass plays, was introduced in 1884, which formed a V-shaped mass with the ball carrier at the Apex forward. The play was successful, and it became the standard opening play for every football team in the country.
The flying wedge was introduced in 1892, which was considered the most spectacular play in the history of football. The play was introduced by Harvard against Yale, and it involved two sections converging toward the ball carrier to create a mass of momentum to overpower the defense.
The video explains how men were moving before the ball was put in play or snapped, as there were no rules that stated players had to be set on the line. The video also mentions how the introduction of these plays led to the formal establishment of blocking rules, disregarding the "offsides" play.
Finally, the video points out that despite the still photo of the flying wedge appearing to be goofy, it was a formidable play when executed in motion.
At the end of 1894, football was in chaos. It was under attack because of its brutality and because people didn’t like the mass plays. Critics like Harvard President Charles Eliot wanted football abolished while Walter Camp, the father of American football, put out a propaganda book defending the sport.
The rules aren’t unified between the schools. Everything is a mess. It’s very possible that football will cease to exist.

Loved the reference to Pudge Hefflefinger, who would go on to become the first professional football player, paid $500 for one game by the Allegheny Athletic Association.

Fascinating. Rugby league (as apposed to rugby union) has possessions and downs. No blocking infront of the ball carrier and no forward pass. A run out of bounds by the ball carrier is a turn over and a forward bounce or forward pass is a turnover. Well technically there is a scrum on a turnover from the offense and defense but in rugby league the scrum is not pushing eachother but the team with ball possession just rolls the ball to their own team on the scrum. Punts are allowed at any down and when it lands its a free ball. There's even a sort of snap to put the ball in play, but rather than a center snapping the ball... the tackled ball carrier after being released by the defense, rolls the ball under his foot and a teammate will grab the ball from the floor to put the ball at play. Rugby league started in 1895 in Northern England when it broke away from rugby union. And was played by professionals while rugby union was played by amateurs. I played for dc slayers (now folded) as an amateur in the USARL. I think rugby league would catch on in usa if more people knew about it. Rugby union is by far more popular (except in Australia) and looks more chaotic with more complex rules.

Watched a few of your History of Football videos so far and they are great. The Flying Wedge sounds like a nasty formation. Thanks for researching and presenting all this great information. I've always been curious of how the game started as rugby and turned into the game we watch today. Great work.

I know there is a movie of some old Footage of early 1900's possibly 1910's football movie where a silent era guy who has 9 fingers between both hands is running with an early football in a scripted game where forward pass was not legal as to when movie is set 1900 using then older outdated uniforms for movie as one guy had on one of those nose and face guards only used around early 1900's before a bigger full mouth guard was developed. I saw 1/2 hour to 45 minute move on TMC in early 2000's. I forget name of movie, but it was a very important one that sparked USA Football interest up.

I don't think the change in rules in soccer and rugby was so different. Soccer started with a mass of players running before the ball, knocking every one away, and the top teams were Universities and the military. The early FA cups were won by Eton (A public school for the very rich) and the Royal Engineers amongst similar teams.. Then the idea of passing came, and the top teams started to come from more industrial areas. Players also started to become more professional (unofficially) Then soccer became a national sport.

There are still occasional deaths from interscholastic play. But there are from baseball as well. Look in a big enough sample of people, some will die...from anything or nothing.

How was time maanged at this point of the game's history? Was game time being suspended at the end of each play, or was the 90min just a set window, from say 4pm to 5:30pm? If the latter, there would be far fewer plays in 90min than in a modern, "60 minute" game. Still getting run over a lot, but perhaps less than a modern conception of game time would convey ... if a 60min game takes 3 hours, then a 90min game would take 4.5 ... yikes. If a 90min game was much closer to 90min, somewhat more conceivable. Somewhat.
