Thanks for a wonderful channel! One point to make, though. The first athletic conference was The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 1892. The SIAA pre dated The Western Conference (Big Ten) by three years and the NCAA (1906) by fourteen years. The SIAA is now defunct but it was the "ancestor" of The SoCon, SEC and ACC as many of the member schools of those conferences were once members of The SIAA.

I grew up in the same Township not too far from where Wally lived. I worked for his brother, Raymond, one summer in parks recreation maintenance. His brother was one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. I also went to Penn State, class of ‘82, but did know about Wally at the time or the origin of the cheer. I only learned about the story behind “We are Penn State” a couple of years before Wally passed away. It amazes me that he is not as well known as Jackie Robinson for breaking into the NFL as the first black player.

I think his is a real story as we know from your channel how pre 1920's football Collage and Pro were uncivilized and big brawls games were. Only who originally threw punch we may never know although somebody on Carlisle Indian team punching Black Bear by accident and Welch just blaming Penn State seems most likely.

I remember in 2000's seeing on AMC a Silent Foot Ball movie in 1920's where a guy planed a running back/half back and he was only 3 fingers on one hand and missing pinky on other. Anyhow he was playing for Ohio state in movie where was about one of first stars in Collage in 1910's using older football gear as you saw 1--2 players wearing a very end style nose mask and odd pads made of cotton and stuffed inside with raw cotton as more modern shape leather pads were not yet invented like pre WWI. I wish I knew movie name.

Great story, thanks! It's of course all speculative, but I tend to agree with @MichaelPiz that something like this likely did happen once (and maybe once again) with the anecdote then being embellished over time.

That's hilarious! It probably has a basis in truth, beginning with something like a single, moderate smack on the head in only one game with more games and more severe attacks being added to the story as the years passed.

The ND/MIchigan feud goes back farther than Yost and Rockne, but that rivalry was the final nail in the coffin. It caused the Big10 to boycott ND. It was said that many times when ND traveled to Nebraska, and other places in the Midwest, that the KKK was at the train stations as well to "welcome" them. Another reason ND had to go more national. I don't think the TV money means that much to Notre Dame as it does with State U. It's more about having a guarantee that the home games get a national audience to the alum and subway alum. It's not mentioned often, but ND is a small school with an absolutely insane endowment around $20B. Unlike a lot of state schools that need the football team's revenue to fund much of the university, ND does not. I am sure if ND dropped the football team, some of that endowment might disappear in the future. Joining a conference might do the same. Would you trade potential billions for a few million in TV money? Aside from the sour history with the Big10, it has been said that most of the conference is made up of state funded research instituions that all vote the same way. Before the great expansions, Northwestern and Chicago told ND, that instead of being outvoted 11-2 on every vote, that with ND they would just get outvoted 11-3. As long as ND can survive as an independent and conduct their school in the way that they see fit, they will do so. With that amount of money in their coffers, they can afford to hold out. The TV money is irrelevant to them. (Not that they don't want it)

Back in 1960, and the election of John F. Kennedy to the Presidency of the US, there seemed to be great consternation amongst many members of the upper echelons of society at the 'rise of the first, ever, Catholic to the highest political office'. So it's not necessary to go back a hundred-plus years to experience anti-Catholic rhetoric.

why was it called the WESTERN CONFERENCE?? it was clearly in the EASTERN TIME ZONE , the REAL teams in the west were on the west coast like WASH, CAL, USC, ORE, STANFORD or at least Oklahoma & Texas, Its a long Tradition of that area MIS naming things like BIG ten when they had 11, 12, and 14, and 18 teams... even Michigans song says Champions of the "west " and they ARE NOT IN THE WEST

"BigTen" is not a mis-naming - when it expanded beyond ten teams, the name recognition had become so strong they stuck with the name, instead of changing their name like the Big12 has numerous times. They were the Big 9 until Mich State joined in 1949, and have been the B10 ever since. Silly to change your conference name every time you add or subtract a team. I do remember when the Big 8 became the Big 12, and it seemed a bit silly and confusing. Thankfully they stopped.

@@CollegeFootballHistory Travel was also a factor. Prior to practical air travel, major league baseball was not played farther west than Milwaukee and St Louis, nor farther south than Cincinnati and DC. That rectangle with St Louis as the SW corner represented the farthest a team could reasonably travel in a day by train. That's why there were so many double headers - because teams had a lot of off days to travel by train. I assume the same applied to college sports and football in general, and to an extant most recognized college football was played east of the Mississippi Valley.

It's not surprising that a Nebraska site would say AAU membership doesn't matter, as Nebraska is the only school to be kicked out in 124 years. But let's get some things straight. Notre Dame is a member of the AAU as of last year. Also the money from football is millions, but research money is billions. Football is the front porch to get research money in the door. I would imagine if Nebraska doesn't get their poop in a group and at least try to get back into the AAU, the B1G might send Nebraska packing as it brings down research money and Nebraska will never return to national football relevance.

a) IOWAST and CUSE were also effectively expelled from the AAU. They just elected to leave first. b) AAU is a brand and culture thing for the [B1G]. NEB's lack of AAU has no effect on the grants for the other members. c) Neither BAMA nor GEORGIA is an AAU member, and both have national football relevance. d) ND does less research than NEB.

Well, first, I can't believe I did all the other research for this and missed that Notre Dame joined in 2023. Dumb on me. Second, this isn't a "Nebraska site" or channel. While I am a Nebraska guy, I plan on casting a very wide net. Third, there are two groups who control college sports right now - lawyers and TV executives. Neither of them care about AAU membership. While that might appease academics in the Big Ten, it's going to be put aside by bigger problems as enrollment continues to drop and higher ed everywhere faces budget issues. I am guessing... that universities will want their athletic departments to not put a strain on their budgets and be more self-supporting in the future. Hence.... not that big an issue going forward.

@@CollegeFootballHistory "While that might appease academics in the Big Ten, it's going to be put aside by bigger problems as enrollment continues to drop and higher ed everywhere faces budget issues." Yes, the reality that most everyone is missing is that the B1G is facing an increasingly compelling demo concern since the populations in the core footprint are stagnant and aging. The core members will not be able to maintain all of their academic metrics. I doubt that expansion will draw top students at the level needed for some metrics, but there aren't that many options to try.

The aau is completely meaningless now a days. Nebraska does more research than most schools in the aau anyway. The big 10 just admitted Oregon for example, which is in no way a better or more prestigious school than Nebraska. It clearly don’t matter anymore in an era where tv rights are the moneymakers.

Great synopsis. ND will likely form a conference from whatever is left of the ACC and whoever else is left out of the next Conference Realignment. As quasi-members of the ACC, they strongly influenced invitations for Cal, Stanford, and SMU to join the ACC. Why? Because ND wants to continue having West Coast rivals and season-ending games in California. They also want to continue playing in Texas frequently. Much like UTexas ran old the Southwest Conference, ND will run this new conference. It will be interesting to see how much support they get from Comcast/NBC in this regard, since Comcast/NBC has just committed big $$$ to the B1G. Perhaps ESPN will step in?

ND's goal is to keep ACC depletion lite so that it stays relevant so that the SEC/B1G can't separate for a separate playoff. That will likely only delay the inevitable. ND would have been better off joining the ACC to save as a peer Tier 1 rather that your prediction.
