What's up KZfaq?!
Many of you know me for the music that I've put out, and the tutorial videos that I've made in the past. However, music is only a small part of my busy life, and I think it's time I give you a glimpse into the rest of my world.
By trade, I'm a restoration artist for my parents' business: All Classic Motors. We specialize in restoration and parts sales for 1960's high-end Fords like Mustangs, Shelby's, and Cobras.
At night, I work on growing my own business: Larson MasterWorks.
I specialize in the restoration and preservation of anything involving vintage automobiles and motorcycles.
This engine has been a project of mine for a few months, and I'm proud to say it has reached the landmark status that I aimed to achieve when I first started on it: It is now an indisputable fact that this is a running engine.
It was a very humbling experience to be able to successfully resurrect such a rare piece of motorcycle history, and I'm also very excited to announce that as of now this engine is FOR SALE!
For those viewing in the future, if the engine has already sold, I will edit this description section and mark as "SOLD".

Yes, but art and museum pieces is all they're good for. Just 3 horsepower from 500CC. Hopelessly crude, difficult and almost useless as a means of transportation today.

@whalesong999
@whalesong999 5 жыл бұрын
Good idea. Those old exhaust valves weren't of the best materials and would warp running out a short stack. A longer pipe would help prevent that. They used long ex. systems on some WW1 aircraft engines to avoid warping as I understand.

Great ! I had a chance to buy a similar motor in Mexico ( no carb) in the 70's, and I didn't do it. Too heavy to carry, and I was too stupid it have it boxed and shipped ! It was kicking around on a shelf in a place that dealt in agricultural pumps. Barn find I suppose.

So we are looking at an overhead intake valve and a flathead exhaust valve?
@davidlarson3905
@davidlarson3905 6 жыл бұрын
Christopher Mondy basically yes. These were commonly referred to as F-Heads or IOE engines [intake over exhaust]. This design died around 1930 with Harley Davidson being one of the last to transition into a flathead. Indian made the change in 1916 though.

Wild! Twin cam then?
@davidlarson3905
@davidlarson3905 6 жыл бұрын
Christopher Mondy I can't remember exactly how the internals are laid out [I rebuilt this engine almost 2 years ago], but I'm pretty sure it's one camshaft with two different cams on the same shaft in front of the cam gear. There are roller-style cam followers that ride on the cams, and those lift the pushrods for the intake and exhaust valves.

Some engines of this vintage had automatic inlet valves . They had a fairly light spring that held a plate on its seat and compression held it tight when the piston was on its way up.

@davidlarson3905 6 жыл бұрын
Herman Wallin technically speaking: yes! Overhead intake, sidevalve [flathead] exhaust. Commonly referred to as the "F-Head" design or the "IOE" design [Intake Over Exhaust]. Very common for early pre 1920s American motorcycles. Harley Davidson used the design until 1929.

@trexthepony8614
@trexthepony8614 6 жыл бұрын
Kjell Ringström don't let the small hp rating fool you. The ft-lb tourqe would be massive on this engine with that displacement, probably near 45 ft lbs which is massive for a light bike in those days.

Mhmm. It's part of why people always scoff at Briggs flatheads, fantastic torque and very low power ratings. So many people nowadays only know pit bike engines and modern Honda clones.

@dadoVRC 6 жыл бұрын
Trex thepony seems you need to understand the meaning of torque and power. 4hp are 4hp, torque is the result of the power on RPM. With an adequate lever you can have enough torque to break earth in half, but you can do it in ages, because you have little power. Power is the only important thing, torque (at wheel) comes from gearbox.

The motorcycle was invented in 1882 by Gottlieb and Daimler. Their machine had a wooden frame and solid cast iron wheels. It was to demonstrate that a liquid fuel (internal combustion engines were stationary domestic gas powered things normally) could be utilised instead. They used benzene (which is extracted from coal) and ethanol alcohol. It wasn't until the 1900's that petroleum, normally the 46% left over waste product from oil refining and back then dumped into rivers, was realised to be better as it didn't cause damage to engines and fuel systems like ethanol does. 4 years later Daimler made the mistake of inventing the first automobile, which have caused most motorcycle accidents and deaths on roads since then.

Very cool! :) I wish I had the talent/money to do stuff like this. I have a pre-1910 single-cylinder Hedstrom-style motorcycle engine in my collection. Unfortunately, it is missing parts, and I will never be able to get it running. In the very least, wish I could figure out who produced it. It's really weird that there is no info cast into the exterior parts. Anyway, I think I will have to sell it soon. It's gonna break my heart to do it, because I always wanted to build a custom boardtrack racer bike, but sometimes you just need to face reality. Perhaps the person who buys it will succeed where I have failed :)

Just out of curiosity if ya don't mind me asking what's missing? With modern cnc machines and 3d printing some parts can be made fairly easily, cheaply and fast. Finding original bits may be impossible but make new? Might be the go?
