Time travel to the icy and murderous cold of the Eastern Front in World War II. Hitler's Wehrmacht suffers a momentous defeat in front of Moscow. It marks a turning point in this war. This footage of a German soldier depicts the everyday life of war in the winter war of 1941 and 1942, with temperatures well below freezing and the omnipresence of death. The German war of aggression comes to a halt.

I grew up on a dairy farm in northwestern Wisconsin USA back in the 1960’s and 70’s. In subzero, blizzard conditions, I could easily imagine the horrors of fighting on the Russian front. At least I had a fairly comfortable old farmhouse to return to after evening chores. That was rarely the case for these men. By the way, American, Canadian and Scottish soldiers also got a taste of fighting winter warfare during the 1918-1919 campaign against the Bolsheviks. They were about as well-prepared for it as the Germans were over twenty years later.

Hitler himself should have been at the front line, tripping over frozen corpses and trying his hardest not to die of either hypothermia or a bullet through the head from a Soviet sniper. But like all other warmongers, he could keep warm in his headquarters, pore over maps and bark orders to his generals. Let someone else suffer and die to satisfy his fiendish megalomania. By the way, two coworkers here in Wisconsin USA had a great-grandfather who was one of those Soviet snipers clad in white. Before he emigrated to America, he was basically told by Soviet officials to leave his memories of the frontline back in Russia. Either before or after his sniper exploits, he also had the job of interrogating German POWs.

When winter was approaching and they knew the campaign wasn't going to be over in 6 week's the Germans should have pulled back on all fronts to shorten the front and set up a layered defensive position in depth. Provide underground shelter for troops to protect them and keep them healthy and rotate them out for combat. If the Russians attacked on any part of the much shorter front they would have been decimated. This would allow the Germans to survive the brutal winter and resume offensive operations in the spring with healthy troops!

@@wombatwilly1002 can't blame the German defeat on the Italians. nobody told adolf to invade russia with only 3300 tanks of 37, 50, & 75mm of 'low velocity' main guns, against the t34 & kv tanks. plus you have to remember that the British intelligence organized a 'coup' in jugoslavia that overthrew the pro German government, which infuriated the fuhrer into launching 'operation punishment' against belgrade. so the germans would have been delayed from launching 'barbarossa' anyway. it wasn't the Italians fault.
