Nice M. Your list of non-stock parts is about identical to my Dad's '51 M Dad bought brand new and took delivery of it Dec. 23. 1950, but we've always called it a '51 like they would have at the FARMALL PLANT, which was only about 20 miles from our farm. We have the Clutch release lever extension so I could run the M when I was 6 years old. Dad put Char-Lynn power steering on it about 1958. It was always the picker tractor, an IH 2ME mounted picker, and then the at first CASWELL loader put on. Around 1960 Dad got a Stan-Hoist loader for it, that required the exact same M&W live hyd set-up your M has. I worked at both the FARMALL PLANT and IH's East Moline combine plant, I worked by the excess and obsolete inventory dept and knew the guys well, and bought two battery box seat bases, one for my '54 Super H, the factory box severely rusted out, and the other one went on the M. We removed the belt pulley gearbox in the early 1960's. We had a drive coupling crack and had to split and remove the top cover on the transmission, replaced a lot of bearings and seals too. Had to go back in it for another failed part making noise 4-5 years later. The original engine was overhauled about 1957 or '58 with 4" IH 5000 ft high altitude sleeves & pistons, it dyno'd at 48 hp, our stock Super M-TA dynoed 47 at the same shop same mechanic. The M was overhauled again in the mid-1960's, 4" M&W Add Power sleeves and pistons, never had it back on a dyno but I'd guess close to 48-50. A Super M set of faster gears from Tractor Supply was installed in the mid-1960's. The M has been repainted 3 times, 1st time with first overhaul, 2nd time mid-1960's by a local FFA, and last time in 2006. It needs new rear tires bad. It and the SH have both been converted to 12 volt with Delco 10 SI alternators, the M was 2 or 3 days old when it first failed to start. I did most of my "first's" on the Super M-TA, first plowing, disking, cultivating, mowing hay, I have NO idea of the serial number, it was traded spring of 1965 at Westbay IH in Galesburg, Ill for a 450 gas with fasthitch and a truckload of fast hitch implements. I absolutely LIVED on that 450 during spring fieldwork, I could burn THREE tanks of gas if I got an early enough start in the morning. I bought an IH #2000 all h6draulic loader a year ago for the M. And a Cross 3-spool hyd valve to raise/lower the loader, dump and curl the bucket back, and run a remote cylinder on a disk, plow, whatever. We had a 12 ft Kewanee disk, never pulled it with the M, just the 450 and the 4010 Deere that replaced the 450. Dad bought a 13 ft 6 inch Krause disk when he got the SM-TA, it did O-K disking corn stalks, disking plowed ground it just spun the tires in place, M&W direct axle duals fixed that, used them on the 450 too. Even had clamp-on duals for pulling the planter for the M and in spring of '69 had clamp-on duals for the Super H. I put the same style distributor drive on my Super H in 1969 as your M has, installed a factory IH tach/hour meterthat spring, plan on putting one on the M too. The parts guy at My favorite IH dealer had a daughter in most of my classes at school, soon as I walked in the showroom he'd say "Hi". He gave me a bit of a deal on the tach parts. Take good care of your M! They are a great old tractor.

That’s a great story sounds like the tractors are very similar stay tuned for the upcoming videos on it it will be lots of fun I would love to find a 450 around here but people want too much money for them

We had an "H" when I was a kid, we bought it in 1974 and it was a bit odd. It had no shift knob and the end of the gearshift wasn't threaded. It had an M&W throttle lever and didn't have a diecast "Farmall" emblem on the nose and appeared to have never had one (no holes) it didn't have lights but the brackets on the crossbar were obviously after market. Had the starter button mounted up the post where you'd expect a retrofit to be. When we bought it we were told it was made in the last year or two of production and it didn't have much use. The pedals didn't have much wear and the sheet metal was all clean. Bushings in the seat were tight. When I changed the rear tires I found date codes on 1946 on the inside of the rims. This was before the serial number/date of production charts were common. I wonder if it was wartime production originally shipped on steel and the starter and rubber tires were added later. the only other H in the neighborhood was a tractor that out neighbor bought at the estate sale of the original owner that spent it's previous life on the belt running the feed grinder on a dairy farm.

Just watched your video I have a 1944 Farmall m it's pretty much still all factory. It does have a little bit of rarity to it it was built and sold on factory rubber the original owners in Iowa I live in Michigan. The fellow I bought this tractor from a little more than 30 years ago did have it dynoed at a tractor dealership up here and I was running 52 horse off the PTO I don't know what kind of motor work has been done to it just put a complete brand new front end new brake shoes and inner complete oil change from the back to the front the rear-end holds 13 gallons it uses a special oil because the gears are flat cut it's 30 weight mineral oil it's rather pricey but you can get it it'll say Ford on the front of the two gallon container I bought mine at tractor supply 👍

Those peddles really look pretty good, my M you cant see the diamonds anymore, the tounge pin hole had pulled through also, we had to weld it back up and drill a new hole for it. You will like the M&W friction throttle i have one on mine, love it the toothed ones skipp back to the idle position all the time.

i had a 44 m with a 450 lp head that had larger valves than a M head and flat head 4 inch pistons and a 450 carb and manifold turned 62hp.. you need to find the transmission drive plate with the upgraded one. running 1900 rpm i almost bet you have a M&W crankshaft in it..that gives an M 75hp alone with the matching cam kit
@DrRust
@DrRust Жыл бұрын
I don’t think it’s got the crank because I had the head off once and I thought It had stock stroke it might have a cam though hopefully I’ll never need to find out

@@DrRust they are fragile, it was broke when I got it, but it is repaired and working again, I do not plan on using the hand clutch. It’s pretty much just a hayride tractor. I have plenty other M’s that get worked.

I’m very impressed by the tractor and all of the improvements and modifications but I would certainly think 2 to 3 times before I put a friction throttle on the tractor. I think once you put it on you won’t have it on there for two months and you’ll be putting the notch throttle lever back on it just my experience

What is the clutch linkage? You mentioned it in the beginning of video. I've never seen that setup, nor understand it's use. I really want live power PTO. Haven't been able to find a complete M&W hand clutch (in my price range)😞
@DrRust
@DrRust Жыл бұрын
A hand clutch is not reliable in an era where parts are not available a Allis wd is a much cheaper option but the piece in this video is a clutch extension to help how the pedal feels and how much effort is required to depress the clutch
@coburnlowman
@coburnlowman Жыл бұрын
@@DrRust I just found a couple of complete tractors with them. The farmer was telling me the same thing. He said they would slip under hard pulling. The WD is so uncomfortable, where the flat floor of Farmall is king.

@@coburnlowman WD hand clutch gives it hydro drive. and more than most can understand., when I get my wd45 stuck blading deep snow. I can use hand clutch to ease it right out like hydrostatic drive its 71 hp.36x18 rear rice & can tires. wide front power steering 3 point 2 hydralike pumps one came off my M ya you can put motocross spring on the seat, but you are sitting on the back of it. it's better than my Chinese 45 hp 4x4 loader tracker with a rod hanging out a hole in the block. lol have a great day Phil

Economical way to add weight to the tire. Trouble is if the tire is dry and you get a leak it shows up quick. With calcium you can have a leak and never notice until it comes out the valve stem hole. I would do my own tires and took the time to wire brush and repaint the inside of the rim when I would get a flat. If you are adding air more than once a year you have a leak.
