I fell in love with the ‘49 Cadillac Convertible the moment I saw Elizabeth Taylor driving one throughout the 1951 move, “A Place in the Sun)”. That gorgeous convertible stole every scene it graced. It still holds a place in my heart second only to my own beloved car-star, a 2008 Cadillac XLR-V. License plate: ‘Cadsila’.

Sometimes you can have colour samples in your hands that just don’t impress you or stand out in any way. If I were to see a sample of this colour it would just never occur to me how beautiful it could look . Having seen this colour combination I know that for me there could be no more stunningly beautiful example of a 1949 Cadillac.

That has got to be one of the CLEANEST cars I have ever seen. I'm surprised they were not wearing gloves when they were touching it. I see the owner has a shammy cloth at the ready. But seriously, the camera distortion when they went around the back made me go into "acid flashback" mode. Dude, the fins are waving at me, LOL.

The Cadillacs from 1948 to 1956 all had remarkably similar styling, including identical tailfin/taillights and single round headlights. The headlights started getting "eyebrows" around 1953. The front bumpers evolved from modest bumper guards as on this 1949 example to the boob bumper bullets starting in 1952. They started experimenting with finer grille textures starting in 1954. The hoods got gradually wider and lower relative to the fenders every couple of years. The rear fenders became a bit more integrated starting in 1950, and again in 1955. These changes were all relatively minor and the overall look of the car remained unchanged from year to year. It was 1957 that introduced a new, higher tailfin and dual "afterburner" taillights. 1958 and 1959 the tailfins got even more pronounced, especially so in 1959. I'm sure this was quite a shock after so many years of stable styling. Dual headlights started appearing about this time too, which changed the "face" of the car quite a bit. Cars started getting lower and longer too. If you'd bought a 1948 Cadillac it would have still looked up-to-date as late as 1956. But if you bought a 1956 it was starting to show its age the very next year and would have looked completely outclassed and outdated only three years later in 1959.

In my view,styling changes don't always mean that the earlier models are outdated - Remember,style is a matter of personal taste.For example,many people consider the 1957 - 58 Eldorados to be more stylish and attractive than the Deville and Sixty Special models of the same year - I don't agree with their opinions.I think that those other two series are more attractive than the Eldorados of those years.And,although the styling cues are essentially the same,the 1950 - 53 models are a different body shape and style than the 1948 - 49 models.The 1954 -56 models are also different from the earlier years.The 1957 models were totally different cars from those that had gone before;they also had an all new X frame,which allowed Cadillac to make the cars lower - They also handled considerably better than the earlier models,due to a lower center of gravity,and new suspension.Personally,I like most Cadillacs of that era -They had class and character.....

At 7:48 that's the motorized electrohydraulic pump for the windows, seat and antenna. The windows were pushed closed/up by hydraulic pistons. The window regulator had two springs to pull it open/down. The valve opened and the pump would pump fluid into the cylinder closing the window. When opening the valve would simply just open and the springs would pull the window open pushing the fluid back to the reservoir. Seat worked the same way back and front. The top had another pump and reservoir behind the rear seat for the top. However, those two (L & R) hydraulic cylinders were two way with a valve on top and another on the bottom. Fluid pumped into top valve and top opened, fluid pumped into bottom valve and top closed. Had a 1951 Buick Roadmaster convertible and that is how the windows, seat and top worked. This Cadillac was still the same operation. My Buick had the radio antenna at the center of the w/shield with a knob on the inside to turn and swing it up or park it down to middle of windshield. Buick had that antenna that way a lot of years. Packard too.

This brings back a lot of memories -- when I was a teenager my dad had one of these in the fastback version . It was finished in black lacquer and with a fresh wash and wax job would turn a lot of heads. No AC which was not unusual in those days. The shot of the radio reminded me of how odd it was by today's standards, transistors hadn't been invented yet so you could drain the battery if you wern't careful. There was a tube that hummed as it converted DC to AC and would get weaker as the six volt system drained the battery. After dad died mom sold it. Wish i still had it.

For everyone who loves the styling, it was headed by the great Harley Earl. He was hired by GM in the late 1930s and by the time he retired in 1962 he had revolutionized the car industry with his design studio. The first division of any car company dedicated to only automobile design. The most beautiful cars of the late 40s - early 60s were GM and led by Earl.

YES THAT IS A GORGEOUS 49 CADILLAC COSTING $3523.00 BASE PRICE .BUT A 49 OLDS 98 CONV COSTING $2973.00 BASE PRICE WAS ALMOST EXACTLY THE SAME .AS THE CADILLAC HAD A 331 CU IN OVERHEAD VALVED V8 THE OLDS ALSO HAD THE EXACT ENGINE IN 303.4 CU IN DISPLACEMENT. HP WAS 160 FOR CADILLAC AND 135 FOR OLDS. WB CADILLAC 126 IN AND OLDS 125 IN. JUST ONE INCH DIFFERENCE AND THE STYLING WAS THE SAME AS THEY USED SOME OF THE SAME BODY PARTS AND CHASSIS.

Yeah, but what me amazes is that this car was far ahead of its time... That also means that we're actually talking about a rich American car history... That lead is vanished! Sadly enough because the American car industry was world leading! And that is exactly what makes me feel bad...

Nice automobile. Congratulations to Mr Flores. First I've heard of hydraulics for to power the windows etc on a GM car that I can remember. Must have predated the small DC electric motors that were used on later years.

Beautiful Caddy....fascinating that the '49 had power windows, power seats, and power convertible top...features that wouldn't become commonplace for years to come...only thing missing was air conditioning, and likely was not available on even the '49 caddy convertible.....

The power equipment had to be hydraulic at the time because electric motors were so big and heavy they could not fit them inside the door lining.

Joey..it is my understanding that when the hydraulic system for the power options broke down and needed repair, it could be a real nightmare, with oil leakage and all sorts of other problems...
@joe6096
@joe6096 7 жыл бұрын
Yep, absolutely. I watched a frame off restoration of a 1954 Fleetwood and they showed how the power windows worked. It was a nightmare. Not only that but they had to rebuild the factory air conditioning system which at the time had to be in the trunk because, again, technological limits at the time meant a big huge evaporator, condenser, and blower fans. The development of smaller, efficient 12 volt motors happened very quickly in the 1950s because of the hydraulic issues. By 1959 all power windows accessories in a car were electric. It was one of the driving forces to convert the electrical system in a car from 6 volt to 12 volt as well. When the windows were hydraulic you didn't need high current relays and extra fuses. The more electrical added to the car demanded higher voltage for safer and more efficient operation.
