Lol, the Philippines is one of the most important geographical locations in Asia; hence, America never wanted it to lose during that time, which is why they returned and liberated it first before pushing to mainland Japan. And if you think about why they are returning to the Philippines today, it is because, for the same reason, if China invades Taiwan, they need the Philippines and Japan for the deployment of their logistics and forces to defend Taiwan. That is not about helping the Philippines economically; it is all about controlling the best strategic locations in Asia.

There’s also a difference how Europeans and Americans colonize the country. You knew what happen to the British colonized countries and French or Dutch or the Belgium. Despite the differences there’s still a better relations with the Americans. The foundation of the constitutions.

The Philippines is Economically viable, it's our population and Corruption in Government levels that stagnated that growth, much of which can be seen today... As a Filipino now in Canada. Canada just offers better opportunities and livelihood than what was available a decade ago, let alone 40 to 50 years ago. 1950s PH is vastly different from the 2000s Philippines and it's the current 2010s that bolstered the change for the country to actually get better because politicians who are corrupt began to be prosecuted for their crimes. Much of which includes but isn't limited to Money Laundering, Insider Trading, and other forms of illegal activities that went unnoticed in those decades. The US had no reason to stay after WW2, they chose to do that. The same thing happened in Korea and that's what led to it being split in two, because one half was siding with the Soviets and the other was joint forces with the Ally Forces of WW2. Yes they had ulterior motives, but they also held up their end of the bargain and that's largely due to the fact that when WW2 ended. The Philippines stagnated in Industry but grew immensely in the Out Sourcing of their work force. All of which can be seen today, with major companies and corporations now opening HQs in the Philippines, it's the same reason India began to out source, because the need for immigrant workers became more prominent as the decades dragged on. Before that, Nurses and other Laborers left the Philippines en masse to work and study in the US, and eventually OFWs became a thing. That's what you call Overseas Filipino Workers who retain their Philippine Citizenship and work abroad in other countries, like the case with the Middle East, Europe, Australia, The US etc. They then take whatever money, work experience, and education they might've gotten during their time in those countries back to the Philippines and put them to use. Let me frame that for you, in Canada and the Philippines. It was a rough adjustment but it became a smooth transition because the Canadian Government values Quality Education, a standard most if not all Filipinos strive to get or give to their children. This is a great thing, yet due to the corruption overtime in the Philippines. The results of the two are drastically different. Both aimed to give their population Quality Education. One succeeded and the other is just beginning to catch up in the past Decade or so. Why? Corruption led to substandard Quality Education in the Philippines where majority of the population rely on Public Schools that are poorly funded. And the staff are poorly compensated. Here in Canada a Teacher can make enough money to buy a house, car, and pay off their Bank Debts within the span of 5 years on their salary. My mother was a teacher in the Philippines and she could barely put food on the table and pay for rent and bills. On top of expenses. That alone shows how drastically corruption can derail decades of growth seeded by previous non-corrupt admins, and how vastly it will affect the population for years to come. That's why I've grown to understand that Voting and Democracy are truly important aspects of building a society where everyone has equal opportunity to succeed in life. Anything else would just diminish the whole point of progressing forward as a society and country. They all brought up valid points. And frankly we should be taking notes instead of just hanging on to their words.

False. The communist insurgency in the Philippines came 2 decades after the US gave Philippines its independence. There was no serious threat of communism inside the Philippines during US colonization. The only reason the US stayed was because the PH is in the heart of the Pacific, a vital location for US to exert its military and economic might in Asia. Although they have given us independence in 1946, they kept their military bases in the Philippines until 92. The Subic Naval base and Clark Air base were both the biggest military installations of the US outside their country. Though I would agree that partially it was communism that made US stay in the Philippines, just not in the country but in Vietnam, China, and Russia. The US military bases in the PH were vital against the Vietnam war.

Exchange students has always fascinated me. An experience away from family in another country (and continent) has the ability to shape their lives for the better good.
