The "I" terminal when used on automotive applications like Ford points systems, was to deliver a full 12V to the coil/points for a hotter starting spark. When running it was supplied via a different circuit with reduced voltage say 9 volts to extend the life of the points.

After I did the video I thought about it and said the same to myself that it was for. However 12v is supplied to the coil which is internally resisted, build in ballast, so only sees 9v of that to the points. All I need to do is put a switch inline to my coil postive wire and it will be good.
