That's because 1959 was in that unique "as close to perfection" as the U.S. would EVER get, following World War II. Never forget that. The styling these cars had were a beautiful marriage of optimism, WW II aircraft and the Jet Age all at the same time. Once mid-century was over, it was never the same. Things are SO bad now, even 1991 seems more like the '50s than the 2010's! .

Thanks Daniel. I was 1 1/2 when these models came out in late '58, turning 60 in May, 2017. I wouldn't have fit in (as an adult) in that era only because of people smoking, seemingly everywhere. We have medical breakthroughs now and natural cures for things that are mainstream now. But we've been in a deader-than-dead generic present since about 1994, and it looks to be permanent. When it comes to cars, the only one I LOVE now is the 2017 Prius with the zig-zag taillights and laser lines with genuine TAILFINS. YEAH, a sexy NEW car with Jetson's styling and FINS!! The new Hyundai Genesis's taillights look about 80% like the '59 Impala. Please check both cars out and tell me what you think.

Rocket-powered jet aircraft were pioneered in Germany. The first aircraft to fly under rocket power was the Lippisch Ente, in 1928.[3] The Ente had previously been flown as a glider. The next year, in 1929, the Opel RAK.1 became the first purpose-built rocket plane to fly. The turbojet was invented in 1939, independently by Frank Whittle and later Hans von Ohain. The first turbojet aircraft to fly was the Heinkel He 178 V1 first prototype of the German Air Force, the Luftwaffe, on August 27, 1939 in Rostock (Germany).[4]

I have my parents 58 CADILLAC series 62 sedan, they bought in 1960 . I was 1 year old. Lifelong southern California car. Silver interior with a dark gray metallic exterior. Factory AC and power windows. I remember when I couldn't reach the door handles, and my legs dangled off the seat! lol. I'm 60 now, and I'm still driving it, around town for errands, and to car shows. Glad you experienced these caddys, and yes, you have to be in tune, and extra careful to drive these old cars, they dont handle ANYTHING like modern vehicles , and take extra time to slow down and stop all that weight. Mom an dad are gone now, but I still have their old car, and it's a touchstone to them for me.

One of the reasons why almost everyone drove a GM, Ford or Chrysler, the one's who could afford yearly redesigns. Effectively putting any 4th, or 5th largest, or as they liked to call them, independents out of business. In turn, the Japanese and Germans carried on the tradition so there are now only a handful of American brands still in existence.

My grandpa had a 1959 Old's 98 with full luxury package like the car pictured here. It was the FIRST car I ever got to drive on a public back road. I was in 6th grade, about 11-12 years old. He just drove a couple miles out of town in our rural county, stopped and said; "you drive". The power steering and power brakes made it very driver friendly. As a kid I felt like I was the captain of a large yacht when you look at the size of this car to an 11 year old kid! Great memories of a good time in a GREAT CAR...

+Lousybarber those and the ones on 59 Buicks were almost impossible to keep working, and I am pretty sure were a nightmare to remove to have repaired. People had them repaired once, and when they went bad again a few months later, just disconnected them. My first car was a 59 98 in 1967 and it was disconnected already on it. You would get up to about 15mph and it would be all the way across banging up against the stop.

Love this era of American cars... basically anything past the round lights, curved back style of the 40's and early 50's and before the Muscle cars that came around the 70's. I remember watching Jetson's reruns as a kid, thats where I was first exposed to the retro space-age era of cars that looks like space-ships and shinny diners lit up by neon's. I never got to live thru it but it's the most American thing I can think of, and it's one of my favorite settings for fiction... there's something that's even a bit creepy about it; the perfect lawns, white-picket fence and cheerful music.. all in an age when everything was as close as it ever has been to coming to an end in a blaze of nuclear fire.

Cars from '58-'62 were from another planet, so many original designs and every Brand looked so unique and then suddenly everything changed, interiors became simpler, bodies became simple and boxy and of course the Tail Fins disappeared too, paint jobs became simpler, and the massive amounts of chrome were going away, it sure was cool while it lasted.

Thanks for the memories! As a kid, we had 3 '59 Olds. Our first was an 88 2 dr htp like this one, our second was a 4 dr sedan Dynamic 88 (mom wanted 4 doors) and then later, my older brother found a clean 88 2 dr htp as his High School car. This car is GORGEOUS and I always loved the 98 taillights, they look like rocket exhausts!

Cars were beautiful in the 50's. So much character. Father had an 88. Loved the speedometer. Started at green. Then orange. Think at 65 mph it went red. Went over 100 mph through Timbuktu, AZ population 4.

That things a work of art. They make great looking mild customs. I'm mean look at that steering wheel. Ill trade my 1960 Cadillac steering wheel for one of those. Mine need minor outer ring resto. But complete.

I don't remember the 60 Caddy steering wheel, but I remember the 59 Caddy's steering wheel. Right in the middle of it, the hub was shaped like a small pointed torpedo aimed right at your sternum. Not a good design choice!

Beautiful car, love the interior, the dash styling, the upholstery. Its amazing how close a fully optioned Olds 98 or Buick Electra was to a lower to mid trim Cadillac in terms of features, fit, finish, size etc The real difference were the engines, transmissions, and the styling. The Oldsmobile looked pretty tame compared to a 1959 Cadillac or Buick though.

The Olds was a more handsome conservative looking car to me. The Electra with it slanted front fenders and rear quarter fins, and the Cadillac with it's Batmobile tail fins, were out there.

You now, maybe, just maybe why Olds went out of business was the fact that an Oldsmobile buyer really did want their parents Oldsmobile's & not the crap we were presented with? Oldsmobile's really were Oldsmobile's right up till 1976 (last year of the 455 engine).
