1961 XLCH Ironhead R&R #155 Motor Rebuild Overhaul Harley Sportster
complete teardown inspection rebuild reassembly install and get running.
this sportster bobber only had 175 miles on its rebuilt motor before it needed to be fix correctly.
I built the bike earlier in the year so it was up to me to fix it now.
see it as I go and don't miss the fun.

Hard to put into words how much I appreciate being able to learn from someone who knows what their doing and doesn't bullshit. I just enjoy knowing that there still a few real mechanics out there that I know how to make power without having to buy it and decorate scooters like Christmas trees.... Keep on keeping on my man, thanks for giving us your time!

enwri oh well, he got the idea after i started taking the motor apart. things happen, fix them and more on. it only cost another 3 or 4 hours of work as i recall. tatro

Are your clutch hub nuts, or as you were calling them, tower nuts, longer than stock? I'm working on a 69' sportster with the same clutch kit as you were here but there is no way I can compress the springs enough to get the Tower nuts to thread on enough to hold their tension. You were using just your hand and I was having a hard time with basically my whole bodyweight. Thanks

When running the clutch wet do you neeed the clutch gear extension (37538-56) installed? Im doing a 68ch and the tranny was missing that part. I know its critical part when running dry due to the 2 seals but was wondering if i could do wet without. Not an easy part to find

i like to use it to support the pushrod. it helps to keep it in the clutch pressure plate where it belongs. tatro

I have learned so much on your shows and I enjoy your hurmor to. I have a 68 Sporteter XLCH and the out side push rods cam out but the center ones are stuck. How can I get them out? The old ones are really worn on the end. Thank you

just pull out the pushrod out from the righ side and then beat the small ones all the way out to the left side. tatro

Hi. I’ve asked this before, and just want to be sure I understand. Despite the bummer you ran into at the end of this video, if you had continued from this point forward, and were going with a wet clutch, would leave the “baby moon” cover with the 12 small bolts and keepers, off the clutch assembly, or put it on? Thanks again!

wet clutch doesn't need or wants a cover over it. let the oil flow. tatro

I was wondering why you recommend for a good kickstart shaft in a 900 xlch with a 74" stroker kit? Thanks in advance

Great videos I've learned a lot from them but I've got a question I've got a 1957 ironhead flat tracker with the shifter on the right side i'm doing a clutch in it I also have the baby moon cap what happens if I leave it off or do I need it to be on there and I didn't see you soak the fibers should they be I've been told yes and I've been told no thank you once again great videos

when you go to a kevlar clutch you can be wet or dry. i leave the cover off so that the can coll the plates and keep them cleaner. the plates can be run wet of dry so why soak them if they sit in oil anyway. tatro

Hi, do you have a video that shows the procedure mentioned at 15.10-15.34 of this video? Thank you

just watch the playlist, it should be in one of the later videos. you can watch any of the bike builds because that type of adjustment is part of any of them. all old bike have the same type adjustments done to them. tatro

Ok great I’ll watch them all. I’ve had my clutch release worm snap at the claw that hold the end of the clutch lever. Upon removal of the rear outer cam case I found the little pin roll had snapped too. I don’t know if these things all happened at the one time or if the pin had snapped on a separate occasion. I’d been having clutch adjustment problems and one day the lever just went on me, hence my investigations behind the cover. New parts are ordered and will go from there. Would it be wise to check the clutch spring distance is set up at the 3/16” measurement as a precautionary measure before fitting and setting up the new parts for the clutch adjustment or fit them first and see how things are regards engaging gear? My bike is a 68 XLH 900 Sportster. Thank you
