1965 Chevrolet Impala SS 396 425: Muscle Car Of The Week Video Episode 224 V8TV
This 1965 Chevrolet Impala Super Sport is sporting a super-rare 396 engine, known as RPO code L78. This one was advertised at 425 HP, and it’s backed by a 4-speed manual transmission! How many 4-speed L78 convertibles are left? We don’t know… maybe 5? This is a great ride from The Brothers Collection, and we remind you to watch to the end… you won’t regret it!

OMG! My 1st car! My dad got a new SS Impala every yr for his bday. He saved THIS one for me! Got it several yrs later. Yes-it WAS the rare model! I learned to drive at age 12 & had a blast that day doing donuts! That car was just TOO COOL! I STILL street race. Never been beaten yet! Presently driving a 21 Charger Scat Pack WIDEBODY 392 HEMI. Would much rather have ANY of my old muscle cars back--but ESPECIALLY this car! You never forget your 1st car. I was so lucky THIS was my 1st CAR! Thank you so much for this video! God bless!

Epic burnout near the end! Wouldn't want to be the maintenance man at the Brother's collection that had to clean all the rubber off the rear fenders after that! Beautiful car...big, but somehow lean looking.

DAMN...... I saw this and went crazy !!! back when I was young, one of my best friends had this exact car ( well, almost, it was a hardtop ) Jet Black Impala SS , 425 hp 396 4 gear...we used to cruise that car all the time.. almost always pulled away from them in 3 rd gear... had 4.10's in the rear end.. miss that car... gotta love the 4 gear cars.. they can compete with the automatics.... wind it up to 3 grand and dump the load, and then the right foot never leaves the floor...

I liked the Impala bench seat model with the 327 & 4 speed. Not sure how many were made but GM had an add with a red convertible, top down, seen from the passenger side with the door open & there was the 4-speed. 1 sold @ an estate sale in this area some years ago.

A standing ovation for that burn out! Man, I had a 65 2 dr hardtop when I was 18 in the summer of '77.yanked the 283 and put in a 327w/ turbo 350 trans.I had to power brake it at the drive in to get a burn out but it sure wasn't anything like that! Very awesome. I saw an SS 65 with a 409 in it. An owner of the local parts store had it. Surely a very early production for 65. Best day at work ever,beatin' the heck outta a rare car like that and getting paid to do it. Only in America!

Awesome car man! I love the 65-66 full size Chevy body style. Especially the bare bones Biscaynes and Bel Airs with the 425 hp L72 427. I'd take a 66 L72 Biscayne over a 70 LS6 Chevelle any day. Especially loved the sleeper cars of that era like the 66-67 426 hemi Plymouth Belvedere/Satellite and Dodge Coronet and the 66-67 R-Code 427 Ford Fairlane and Mercury Comet

Yes, One. I think they were extras left from 64. Only lasted until what? January '65? I almost bought it back many, many, many years ago. It was a Tan/Biege SS coupe - white interior. 340 hp/powerglide version and completely loaded down to the gauges/tach/tilt wheel and a/c I might be forgetting something. I just procrastinated to long and then, it was gone. What a shame. Now there is no way I could afford one. The people that bought it probably never knew what it was. The engine compartment was detailed and they painted the engine orange (over the chrome). We checked. We first thought someone had dropped in a 348. But the dip-sick was on the right side and was partially chrome with SS 409 stamped on it. Same as my 63.

The 2 speed Powerglide really hurt the performance of whatever car they came in. I can't believe they were even offered as an option in cars like the early GTO's. The GTO's with the Powerglide were significantly slower than a 4 speed GTO. They were a decent transmission but not in a high performance car. The Chrysler 727 Torqueflite was the only automatic transmission that I would even consider ordering in a muscle car back then. The GM TH400 was a good automatic transmission but they didn't come out until later on. Im not sure of the exact year though. I know the Mopar Torqueflite first came out midway through the 1956 model year

Boy do I owe someone a BIG apology. A fellow at a car cruise had a hardtop with the 396/375 4 speed and I said to him that that motor was only in the Corvette and the Z16 Chevelle in 1965. He said he had the correct documentation that came with the car when he bought it. My apologies sir, you win.

My best friend had parents that pretty much gave him whatever he wanted and his FIRST CAR was an all white ,65 SS Impala convertible! IMAGINE! That thing was absolutely GORGEOUS. Maybe 2 years old when he got it?? My first car (by comparison) was an old, very beat up 63 Ford Galaxie four door that had a dent in every single body panel! I aid $25 for it!! 6 cyl, three on the tree. That Impala was the car to have back then! Had a 283 turbo glide trans. Not bad but certainly no 396!

The 65 Impala SS396 425 HP version is my all time favorite "plus size" muscle car. Actually it's a toss up between this,the 63 1/2 427 Ford Galaxie, and the 62 Pontiac Catalina 421SD. Mopar never really offered full size muscle cars like GM and Ford

The '65 Corvette was rated at 425 with a 396. Most others made less, Z16 Chevelle made 375. A handful of Impalas, because they were considered a full size car, came with the L78 at 425 hp.
@GS455Stage1
@GS455Stage1 6 жыл бұрын
The 1965 Chevy 396 cubic engines came in 2 hp variations due to mechanical options available as to a higher compression ratio on the 425 hp version along with different camshaft/ different intake / carburetor option / Holley larger CFM / High output fuel pump. Also, the crankshaft was stronger and the connecting rods were stronger than the 396/325 hp engine. The 425 hp compression ratio was with 11::1 versus 10::1 for the 325 hp version. Lastly, the 425 hp version was only available for the heavier vehicles to keep the power to weight down for insurance purposes. The 425 hp version wasn’t available for the 1965 Chevelle body style lighter body style. The Corvette engine size for the 1965 model year was 327 & 427 cubic engines. I don’t believe the 396 / 425 hp engine was optioned for the corvette during the 1965 model year production run.
