Here's one for the Buick fans... a 1970 Buick GSX 455 Stage 1 4-Speed in Saturn Yellow! Buick made 678 of these luxo-rockets in 1970, and they were certainly out of character for the Buick brand. Producing 360 horsepower and 510 ft. lbs. of torque, these capable street brawlers were running with the fastest Muscle Cars from any manufacturer. In fact, Motor Trend Magazine clocked a 1970 Buick GS Stage 1 car tripping the lights in 13.35 seconds @ 105.5 mph in '70, fast enough to be called their quickest test of 1970. The Brothers Collection never disappoints, and it certainly appeals to all Muscle Car brands.

The Buick 400, 430 and 455 were all the same block, and that block was 1.5" wider than a SBC, but only 30 pounds heavier. Considering a BBC was 900 pounds, and a max of 454 CID, the Buicks were much lighter, and the 455 had more displacement... I put a "mildly" improved 455 in my first car (1968 Impala 2-door Custom) in high school. It came stock with a THM-400 and 2:56 gears in the punkin. She got a mid-grade RV cam, dual exhaust and an 830 thermo-quad toilet. At 4,280 pounds with 5 gallons in the tank, that 455 would light up both rear tires at 25 mph and keep smoking until I got my foot out of the carburetor. It also got 12 mpg at 80 miles per hour between Montana and Kansas. What an American icon.

Back in 1970 Buick GS 455 Stage 1 was the torque of the town!!!! I got mine in '74. It was a G.S Stage 1,4spd 3.42:1 posi. Power steering & front disc brakes, & A/C. Aftermarket wasn't there for the G.S. all I got was a fiberglass fan, & ' vette sized hi performance radials. As hard as I drove, the G.S. NEVER left me stranded. I, would ride w/6ppl, (bench seat). Stupid me got spit for it on trade in '76. Then the 455 on my 2dr Landau 225 had no where near the power. But,I got just about every option, I fell in love again with Buick. When better cars are built, BUICK BUILT THEM 🇺🇸♥️

Buick's 455 was significantly different from the Chevy 454s and Pontiac 455s. It had thin wall construction, which made it lighter, and a lot of tweaks. Not a lot of interchangeable parts.

I'm So Proud To Say That I'm The Son Of a PONTIAC and BUICK Dad That Sold Both Brands From 1964-2008 - Love That He Sold Many Of a G.T.O. and Trans Ams, But I Really Have a Special Place In My Heart For BUICK's Torque Monsters From 1968-72 Stage 1 V-8s!!!

I'm typically a Mopar guy when it comes to muscle cars...but this Buick is definitely one of my all time favorite muscle cars from GM. My top 5 GM muscle cars: 1. 69 Camaro ZL1 2. 69 GTO Judge Ram Air IV 3.70 Chevelle SS 454 LS6 4. 70 Buick GSX 455 Stage 1 5. 73 Trans Am 455SD

The term "Hemi Killer" became synonymous with the 1970 GS Stage 1 after GSCA Founder Richard Lasseter walloped a braggart with a 1970 GTX Hemi and also his friend in a 1970 Hemicuda with his Stage 1 the same day in Dec. 1984 for the March 1985 issue of Muscle Car Review. Richard's GS was driven 275 miles down to the Gainesville (FL) Raceway to beat those two Hemis!

@@jameswinter6125 Thank you, James. Just google "Hot Rod Hemi Killer" for the one and ONLY 5-min. video of this little guy race that was put together in less than 2 weeks by MCR editor Donald Farr. The track was getting ready to close for the Christmas season. Hot Rod magazine labeled Richard's 100% street-driven GS "Hot Rod Hemi Killer" because this old video came out of the Hot Rod magazine archives.

I wonder what mods he used to beat the Hemis. Also, gear ratios and tires play a huge part. Stage 1 was rated at 360hp but produced around 400hp. The detuned, Street Hemi produced an advertised 425, but according to Hemmings dyno reports, it put out 494.4 hp at 5,950 rpm and 498.3 lb-ft at 4,500 rpm in stock form. Stage 1 a Hemi killer, not at all. But it's fun to dream, I guess.

@@greasyhitchball You ask about mods? They were clearly noted on BOTH cars in the March 1985 issue of MCR. BTW, the GS was driven to the track from a state away while the Hemi was trailered. (2) Hot Rod magazine called it the "Hemi Killer", so your grievance is with them. The old video shows once again that torque (not horsepower) is king with heavy street machines as that GS drove around the GTX Hemi after it red-lighted. As I previously noted, If you'd google "Hot Rod Hemi Killer" (which you didn't) it'll answer your questions that you pose here. Re. the cams in both cars, in the video noted above, the 1970 GTX Hemi obviously had a wilder cam compared to the Buick. You could easily notice it in the idle of both cars. BTW, that same video shows the GS beating TWO 1970 Hemis on that very same day. So that old video PROVES that on that day in Dec. 1984, the GS was indeed the "Hemi Killer", just as Hot Rod called it. . And that's no "dream", but established fact.

@@greasyhitchball Torque is what gets you off the line, HP is what gets you your speed. The GS made it's 510 torque at 2800 RPM so it had a huge advantage off the line if you could get it to hook up. I just watched engine masters and they compared a 440 to the 426 and the 426 didn't make the torque you're claiming and the 440 actually made more. The hemi was never good off the line, but approaching the end of the 1/4 mile is when the hemi would start to breath and really make power. Both are quick cars and a Buick beating a hemi was not a one time thing. Not saying the hemi isn't impressive, but the hemi fans are obsessed with it and think nothing can beat it and it's just not the case. But it's fun to dream, I guess.

I prefer this beauty in Apollo white......probably because that's the color Dad had. I can remember jumping around in the back seat and he'd punch it to sit me down right fast, and glare at me in the rear view mirror....lol. Mom pestered him to trading it for a luxury Riviera in 1976 or '77.....He loved him some Buicks as a lot of Dads did back then.

I remember when these came out I was not very impressed with them.....Buick....funky paint job....what the heck. Then.....a 455 GSX ate up my Roadrunner at a stoplight.....and again....you get the picture. Totally had to re-think my idea of Buick....

We found a 70 in the junkyard couldn't be fixed so we put the 455 in a nova wow! we were pulling hi 11s in the quarter mi.

Thanks for the cool video. I like seeing sporty Buicks since there's nothing cooler than seeing a fast car from a brand that isn't known for being fast. In a way, this GSX is almost like a grandfather to the Regal T-Types and Grand Nationals of the 80s.

My frend had one I drove it I couldn't believe the power. I had a 70 GTO with a 455HO the GSX was more powerful and the perfect sleeper if you race it your going to lose

I too had the privilege of driving one. It smoked like crazy. He just got it, and I never knew what they were. This was mid 80's. He raced his Uncle in his 69 Shelby 428 Super Cobra Jet that was in pristine condition 10 times. From dead stop, and 10 mph incriminates to 100 mph roll. Beat him Everytime. Used 3 gallons of oil doing it. I'm not exaggerating. I'm sure he has completely restored it now. It wasn't a Stage 1, but he order all the things to make it a Stage 1. He also bought the first year GN, first one in Lafayette Ga. I hadn't heard of it. He immediately put a 4:10, changed the Induction system and upgraded the chip. He ask me to take him to town to race. He ask "Who's the fastest"?. That was a Trans Amm, 455, built, 2 fours, tunnel ram, 4 speed and I think 373 gear. He beat the GN by a fender. So the TA was fast. My friend had Slicks on his GN too. Should've seen the Guy in The TA when I said "Not bad for a V6 eh?". He called me a liar. I said "Count the plugs". He couldn't believe he bought the car on the Showroom, a V6, and almost beat him. My friend did a few more changes and beat him later.

Oh yeah. It’s s stock GSX with the 455 Stage 1 with 4 speed. Being 65 years old and still living in the Motor City area, I have seen a ton of muscle that guys still have stored in their garages at their homes. That Buick is an absolute monster beast and I would spend the $300K to buy one. Been looking for years and can’t find 1971 with a 4 speed anywhere even at auctions. Nice video for sure!

I rebuilt the engine in one of these (dealership) back in the late seventies. Driving gently while testing the fresh build, I lit up the tires at 70mph without shifting down (automatic). Scary ride.

I sooooo regret not paying better Attention to these old cars. I was only 5 when this came out, but they were still plentiful. The things I've let slip away. Superbird, went to scrap. A 70 Chevelle SS for $1,200, in great condition. The 428 SCJ a guy give me. I didn't realize what I had. I have a long list of Super Sports, Nova to Impala. I had a 66 and 65 Impala SS. One of my biggest regrets is, a cougar. My dad and I went to a small Junkyard almost every Saturday. One Saturday, I saw a Cougar. I always liked the Cougar over the Mustang. The front clip was set off, and the car was in great shape. It was around 79 The car was only 11-12 years old. I was 14 years old. Interior great. Motor and Trans was in the barn the guy said. Big block 4 speed. I ask my Dad, "Who's Dan Gurney?". The man priced me the car for $500. He said the engine ran great. But pop said "Nope! Too Fast!" End of subject. But I've passed so many great cars up. They were plentiful then. You could buy a Plymouth or Dodge for a few hundred. Often, people would give them to you if you got it out of the yard.

One of the most beautiful cars ever made. I’ve seen GS’s; but GSX never. Yellow and black is the perfect color combo. If I had a choice between a 454 Chevelle and the GSX; I’d chose the Buick all day.

As a teenager I remember seeing a Buick GSX for sale in the local auto trader for around $4000.00. It wasn't a big block car as it had only the 350 engine but it was still a very very nice cruiser. I ended up picking up a stock midnight blue 1973 Formula 455 and rebuilt the engine since the car was already repainted with a good paint job. Back in the 80s the police didn't harass the local kids for street racing as accidents were very few and far between.

They look good next to a 1969 Hurst/Olds. And a Pontiac Judge. GSX With a nice LS 6 Chevelle for comparison. 4 Kings! Very similar,very different.

I guess you could call me a "GM guy", and in particular I am a "Chevelle guy". Chevelles are the muscle cars I know the most about, and I've owned more SS 396 or 454 Chevelles than any other make or model of muscle car throughout my life. With that said, I have ALWAYS loved the look of the 1970 Buick GS. I always thought that it looked like a more sophisticated 1970 Chevelle SS...which...actually makes perfect sense because that is essentially what it was supposed to be as a Buick muscle car. But just the overall design of the '70 GS really appeals to me and I've long thought about buying one. I'm not a big fan of the flashy GSX and really am more interested in a 1970 GS 455 or a Stage 1. I came VERY close to buying a BEAUTIFUL 1970 GS 350 car that was on my local Craigslist maybe 10 years ago. It was one of the cleanest muscle cars I've ever seen on Craigslist and I think they were only asking $14,000 for it. I'm not really into small block "muscle" cars and that is why I never called about it but boy did I come close. I figured that even if it was "just" a 350 car, for $14,000 I could buy it and drive it everywhere all the time without really worrying about it. Looking back on it now, I wish I HAD bought it because I even liked the color and options. It was gold with a brown interior and I LOVE the Earth tones on muscle cars of this era (of my collection, my baby is my 1969 Chevelle SS 396 4-speed that is Burnished Brown with a white (parchment) bucket seat interior and NO center console). It also had buckets and a center console with the automatic trans. It was just a really nice-looking car and if it had been a 455 car, I would've bought it in a heartbeat. I do have to say that I actually learned something from this video. I knew that there was the "base" 455 engine and the Stage 1 (and dealer-installed Stage 2) engine available in the regular Grand Sport but I thought that ALL of the GSX cars were Stage 1's. I truly had no idea that you could get the "base" 455 engine in the GSX! The only reason why I really am not a big fan of the GSX while I LOVE the 455 Grand Sport is because of the colors. I just don't understand why they decided to make only two colors available on the GSX, and why they would limit those two colors to just white and yellow is something I understand even LESS. Neither color really appeals to me at all. I do own a yellow Chevelle (my 1972 SS 402) but that shade of yellow is not that really loud, bright shade of yellow, it is a more cream-colored shade...which is probably why the official color name from GM was "Cream Yellow", paint code 56.

The low end torque of the Buicks was wild. Definitely set your butt back in that seat on launching it. I had a 71 Buick skylark Buick 350 which was dependable and rode like a Cadillac . I blew the 10 bolt differential out and ended up putting a 12 bolt posi trac from a wrecked Buick custom skylark. With a thermo quad 4 barrel carburetor I could burn the tires off in all 3 of the automatic transmission. I never had issues with anything really on the car. They were great underated cars because I raced dodge and Chevy and ford's and smoked them all. Some with built engines .

A cringe-worthy memory; My childhood still embarrasses me. My father took our family to a car show in the sixties and as a car crazy child, I had been pouring over car magazines, studying up on everything available at the time so I knew more than I ought to, I guess, when I sought out a Chevrolet car salesman at the show, to tell him I had just read that GM's level of quality started at the top with Cadillac then Buick, then Oldsmobile, Pontiac, with Chevy at the bottom, and asked him if he knew that. Well, I know now, someone probably should have slapped my smart a** little mouth but I remember a depressed, sad look on the man's face as he said, "Yeah, I guess", and slowly turned and walked away. I bet I really made his day.

In 1975 I was @15 at that time, saw a GSX (Saturn yellow) waded-up sitting in a junkyard near Culpeper, Va. It was bad.......... as the roof was caved sideways like it hit a tree at speed crossed-up. I went over to look and indeed it was a 4-speed car. I knew even then that it was very rare, the yard had removed the engine, but it was still there inside the building on premises. On the trunk lid was the emblem from the local Buick dealer. So it was bought AND wrecked locally! I didn't know how low the production numbers were until much later. Although the car would have been a huge project needing a donor car to complete, I always wonder if someone did save it.

I had a Mustang Mach 1 SCJ and I ran one of these . Traction bars were a must. That car caught rough pavement and almost jumped on top of me . All big blocks had that problem. If I saw they didn't have them they were toast. I used to rev up and get them to just sit and spin . I'd just go from first to third and look for them in the rear view 😜❗

My very first car was that Buick Gran Sport pictured in the advertisement in this video. Mine was white with a black top, 4-speed. I bought it in 1970 when I was 18 years old. It was a California car so it looked terrific.

Dang.. beautiful car. I have a 70 chevy c10. Its got a built 350. Getting ready to drop a even more built 350 in it. 70 was a speacial year for factory high performance vehicles. Am Blessed to own a 70.

there was a Stage II version, not many were made only about 25 or so. bought mine new it was 6 months too get it , had to special order it !!! the stage II came intake in the back seat in a box with the heads! lost it in a house fire !

Like the Hemi 426/425 HP had 490 ft lbs @ 4000 rpm.The Buick 455/360 HP had 510 ft lbs @2800 rpm.The Buick engine weight was over 200 lbs lighter than the Hemi.

TheIMightyIndman When I was 16, in 1986, I had a '71 Buick wagon with the 455 4bbl as a winter beater to keep my '66 Nova in storage. I begged my Dad to let me keep the 455 for a future Skylark, but no dice. Make your own.

Can anyone explain WHY the Buick 455GS motor was so damn powerful compared to other comparable engines??...(Especially the Stage 1) Compared to the HEMI, 454, 429, etc, the specs on the Buick don't seem so outstanding. So WHAT EXACTLY makes them so strong? Was it really just low/mid torque? I had a '71 GS and it felt so much more powerful than my Ford 429. Buick had some serious secret sauce.

+Mechan Knuckle (mechanknuckle) The Buick powerplant engineer who developed the engine said that the engine was developed with air cleaner, full exhaust and accessories. A wilder cam was not used because it did not make more horsepower under these conditions. The 360 hp rating was very close to the as installed or net rating. According to the engineer “The objective, as we developed the Buick Stage 1 400/455-CID engines, was simply to provide maximum street performance in a vehicle sold from the showroom floor. There were no ifs, ands or buts about it- we optimized the Stage 1 package to move on the street. All of this special engineering was targeted toward the basic goal of maximizing total street performance. The axle ratios, camshaft timing, transmission calibration, valve size, exhaust system, fuel and spark all played their part.”

+DONDIVA1969 Well, this makes sense, but still doesn't explain why the engine specs makes so much power. The Buick 455 motor doesn't have large valves, especially free-flowing ports, or radical cam design compared to say a BB Chevy, but the Buick will perform and outperform a 455 Chevy. I believe that less is more in many cases with engine design. Large ports, valves, etc makes lots of power upstairs, but yet the much milder Buick performs great at top end too.

+Mechan Knuckle (mechanknuckle) The reason for the engine being so powerful is because Buick engines were (and some still are) under-square. In engine terms, a square engine means that the width of the piston and the distance the piston travels are the same. An over-square engine means that the width of the piston is greater than the distance the piston travels.... An under-square engine is the exact opposite. Under-square engines make their torque at low-rpm levels while over-square engines make their torque at high-rpm levels. The Buick 455 made 510 lb.-ft. of torque at 2800 rpm. I hope this is a little more helpful.

Your crazy if you really think this car's 455 was only producing 360 HP. They were purposely underrating the HP on these models, as was every other Muscle car made from 67 through 1970. The Buick GS Stage 1 and the GSX were producing over 420 HP when checked on the Dyno. It had a faster time in the quarter mile than the 1970 426 Hemi Cuda. The Buick GS Stage 1 was one of the fastest cars out on the street.

Every one that talks about the 70 GS always comments on the hood scoops and say the same thing, that they don't do much. But that simply isn't true. Nothing but a big Pro Stock scoop does much to force any air in but in reality the air speed moving into the engine is way faster than any hood scoop will take in air. The fact that they draw in fresh air from outside instead of hot under hood air means they will increase power. Virtually every car built today draws air from inside the fender or under the front bumper and through a long duct to accomplish the same thing. Not as cool looking as the old hood scoops from the classic muscle cars but just as effective.

Beautiful car! The ultimate Buick GSX. AND you can get a clone oh I’m sorry a tribute. For a whole lot cheaper! Who cares it’s not a real one? If I had the real one I’d be afraid to drive it,..let alone take her down a dirt road. People just love this car Saturn yellow or otherwise.

in 70 yes in 71 72 you could get 6 colors however it didnt have the power of the 70. you could also get the stage 1 in just the regular gs in any color produced.

the heads make the power on this car along with other things....it's 360 horse to the ground..... that's a 400 plus horse engine for a fact....you don't make 510 lbs of torque unless it's powerful..... extremely cool car.

I had a 70 455 Stage 1. Had the motor rebuilt to stock after the rings needed replaced. Unfortunately, it made 360 horsepower at 5,100 rpm, less than 300 to the wheels. I really wasn't that fast before or after the rebuild.

I'm a Mopar man but the 70 Buick GS/GSX 455 Stage 1 is probably my favorite muscle car of that era produced by any of the GM divisions. One reason is because you never see them. SS Chevelle's and GTO's are a dime a dozen compared to these rare beasts. The only disadvantage they had was the 2 bolt mains and thinwall block casting. They were known for cracked engine blocks... usually in the lifter valleys. Kevin is absolutely right about that. The thinwall casting made the Stage 1 455 about 150 pounds lighter than a Chevy 454 big block but it also really affected the durability of these engines. Awesome road car and very fast but really not the ideal car for drag racing on a regular basis. You were better off with an LS6 Chevelle for that if you were a GM guy

A buddy of mine came across one of these way back in the woods rusting away. The rumor in the area was that the owner in the 70s or 80s had driven it way back in the woods and it got stuck.

I rushed to the nearest Buick dealer and asked "Where are all the RWD V8 cars? Where?" All they said is "Oh, no, all we make are FWD SUV's". Egads I had to go to a German sedan car for RWD. I think all the remaining RWD sedans are German, even the Chryslers
