Wow I never realized the potential of those little 289s with some mods. Can't believe these cars ran 11s. Super cool car

Ford had a winner with the 289, because even a C-code 289-2V would wake right the hell up with a few modest tweaks. The early Ford 'X'-chassis cars (60-65 Falcon/Comet, as well as '64-66 Mustang) were the perfect platform to show off what that little engine could really do. I used to irritate the living hell out of the Iroc-Z poser-bois on Westwood-Northern boulevard with my '65 Cyclone back in the '80s - even that schnook who thought his 350-swap was 'all that' (it wasn't).

Nice educational & historic video, thanks! And yes, I love what Ford was doing back then! I also miss my 72 Grand Torino Sport fastback, 4 speed I had & built & the 66' 427 side oiler, dual-quad, dual plane tunnel port manifold with 652 Holleys & a whole bunch more I put into it including a delicious sounding Sig Erson popcorn popper high rpm cam! What a ferocious & strong big block that was & the best hipo big block ever made in my opinion!

Ahh, a fellow Sig Erson cam runner!! I run a Hi Flow 1H in my 351w Fox Body. It's a hell of a cam.

The 289 is a very dependable engine and easy to build. Tons of after market stuff!

Will Butter He stated low 11's back in the mid 60s. That's INSANE for a 289cu/in car! There just isn't a word that describes how badass this car is! Imagine the '65 A F/X Comets with 427cu/in engines..... There are videos about them, and they sound fantastic.

I think when you referenced Bill Stroppe; He was primarily Mercury with the exception of the Baja Broncos. The 271 HP 289 was not availble in the US market except in Mustangs and Fairlanes. Not available in Comets.

Awesome episode because, I have a photo album with all kinds of photos of my dads friend, Ed Terry, whom, in 1965 drove a B/FX 1965 Shelby 350 with the same 1/4 mile mods, as sponsored by Ford and delivered to the Kleinman-Cole Ford dealership on 96th Ave, in Oakland Calif. They ran that car at Fremont Drags every weekend and back then, 11.5 and 120+mph was really fast. Funny thing, the guys use to rent the black and gold Shelby 350's from Hertz rental car and drag race them at Fremont drags too.

The 1965 BFX Comet Cyclone has 3 ideas that are not correct! Front Bumper is aftermarket, front grill emblem is not a Cyclone, the shock tower braces are from a standard Comet not a hipo car. ~~~AFX DAVE~~~
