1967 Epee Duel Deffere vs. Ribiere

Narration is in French. This is newsreel footage of one of the last (if not THE last) epee duels to first blood in France. The duel was in 1967 between Gaston Deffere, Mayor of Marseille and Rene Ribiere.
Defferre was a participant in the last duel in France that took place in 1967 when Defferre insulted René Ribière at the French parliament and was subsequently challenged to a duel fought with swords. Defferre yelled ‘Taisez-vous, abruti!‘ (‘Shut up, stupid!’) at Ribière following an argument in the French National Assembly. Ribière demanded an apology, Defferre refused, so Ribière demanded satisfaction by duel. René Ribière lost the duel, having been wounded twice. He escaped relatively uninjured, however.

for the people who don't speak French. This duel is between two politicians who had an argument during a debat, and they decided to end it in a duel. Some duel can end with the death, but as the journalist, we can't kill in our days, this is 50's, killing in duel is not really appreciate by the society . So this duel ends with the first blood, the winner makes the arm bleed of his opponent.This duel is also the last duel what happens in France.

For anyone still wondering, Ribiere lost after getting cut twice on the forearm, slightly it was a first blood thing duel but after getting cut the first time he asked for a rematch still at first blood (guessing he could've asked to death)

This is what duels actually looked like. Even battles in war were often more pussyfoot than the movies have you imagining. When it comes to facing death people generally exercise caution. Shocking, I know.

It's still an assumption to say this is how older duels looked like, though. We can't say how they looked unless there's precise descriptions or images, of which there are few. This is further amplified by the fact that this is a specific type of Epee duel and I don't know if the combatants are trained.

Gaston Deferre didn't want to appear on video. He asked not to be filmed. You can see that when he arrives at the duel at 0:36, his witness for the duel waves at the camera to stop filming.

Duel to first blood shed only! Former student of Sorrèze we had courses of fencing. Many politicians came from this school. The idea was that the threat of dueling forced people to think before insulting. Doubtless the "strong" were favored, but the offended person had the choice of the weapon, the place and the date; The duel remained a dangerous eventuality. Consequence: the morals were more polished, and, in fine, less violent Duel au premier sang versé seulement ! Ancien élève de Sorrèze nous avions des cours d'escrime. Beaucoup de politicien étaient issus de cette école. L'idée c'était que la menace du duel forçait les gens à réfléchir avant d'insulter. Sans doute les "forts" étaient avantagés, mais, l'offensé ayant le choix de l'arme, du lieu et de la date; le duel restait une éventualité dangereuse. Conséquence: les mœurs étaient plus policés, et, in fine, moins violente.

National Geographic History magazine March/April 2016 has an interesting article on the history of dueling in France. It mentions this duel, and it was deadly serious. According to the article: "the sword-wielding combatants agreed to halt only after Ribiere was wounded twice".

It's actually not so different form the pacing of modern epee fencing, which (since the whole body is a target) is more defensive/strategically focused and has long bouts of feigning and footwork without any attacks.

The chap on the left was deliberately lowering his arm to tempt his opponent to attack the exposed fore & upper arm, but it is, of course, a trick & the chap on the right shd be well aware of the danger of a lowline stop hit if he attempts to suddenly move forward, on the attack. One can see some interesting tactical thinking in the style each man has chosen. I think as fencers they looked equally competent. I wonder who was judged the 'winner'?

Why would we be so important? Just try to justify our race's existence without implying some "God's fairy tales". Actually it was, they had modified Epees, they were Epees with small sword blades, Rene Ribiere lost with two minor injuries, this was intended to first blood. They did get into a little trouble for doing this though.

Qu'est ce que tu fumes , les gens portent plainte pour un oui pour un non , ils sont beaucoup moins fiers qu'avant , tu connais quelqu'un qui est mort d'un tir de kalash pour une insulte ? Un ami a toi ? Faut éteindre la télé et retourner a la réalité , on est pas au brésil , ni au mexique . tu prends le ratio meurtre par habitant il y en a presque 10 fois + dans un pays comme la Russie , en France il y a très peu de violence , avant un ferme ta gueule tu pouvais te prendre un coup de fusil avec les vieux français , aujourd'hui ça va au comico au premier regard de travers.

In Germany students engage in "Mensur" and same goal is first blood and the duel ends. However first blood is a bit more than a scratch and results in most cases ina scar which is hold as a batch of honor

These were two men who had a disagreement. They didn’t choose to endlessly argue, nor to kill each other in cold blood. They had a French duel where first blood wins. Both men perfectly fine mentally, just needing to settle a dispute in a way that they see fit. Call it toxic masculinity all you want. However they settled their dispute in a way that I wish the male politicians could do to this day.

I mean sure, but I don’t think people made it as political as calling it toxic masculinity. I think people were taken aback a bit when they found out that duels happened so recently, when to most of us it’s a Victorian, or medieval idea. Don’t get me wrong, it’s cool as hell, but I don’t think it would work today. Image two 70 year old men swinging swords at each other because one called the other a clown, or talked over the other during a presidential debate in America

Montpelier Montgomery I don’t know his actual name but it seems the one that is from marseille is part of the socialist party. The footage is grainy but I believe he won.
