The first-generation Ford Mustang was manufactured by Ford from March 1964 until 1973. The introduction of the Mustang created a new class of automobile known as the pony car. The Mustang’s styling, with its long hood and short deck, proved wildly popular and inspired a host of competition.
It was initially introduced on April 17, 1964, as a hardtop and convertible with the fastback version put on sale in August 1964. At the time of its introduction, the Mustang, sharing its platform with the Falcon, was slotted into a compact car segment.
With each revision, the Mustang saw an increase in overall dimensions and in engine power. The 1971 model saw a drastic redesign to its predecessors. After an initial surge, sales were steadily declining, as Ford began working on a new generation Mustang. With the onset of the 1973 oil crisis, Ford was prepared, having already designed the smaller Mustang II for the 1974 model year. This new car had no common components with preceding models.
As Lee Iacocca's assistant general manager and chief engineer, Donald N. Frey was the head engineer for the Mustang project - supervising the development of the Mustang in a record 18 months from September 1962 to April 1964.[4][5] - while Iacocca himself championed the project as Ford Division general manager.
Drawing on inspiration from the mid-engined Ford Mustang I concept vehicle, Lee Iacocca ordered development of a new "small car"[6] to vice-president of design at Ford, Eugene Bordinat.
Bordinat tasked Ford's three design studios (Ford, Lincoln-Mercury, and Advanced Design) to create proposals for the new vehicle.[7]
The design teams had been given five goals[8] for the design of the Mustang: It would seat four, have bucket seats and a floor mounted shifter, weigh no more than 2,500 pounds (1,100 kg) and be no more than 180 inches (5 m) in length, sell for less than $2,500, and have multiple power, comfort, and luxury options.
The Mustang GT version was introduced as the "GT Equipment Package" and included a V8 engine (most often the 225 hp, 168 kW, 228 PS "289"), grille-mounted fog lamps, rocker-panel stripes, and disc brakes. In the interior, the GT option added a different instrument panel that included a speedometer, fuel gauge, temp. gauge, oil pressure gauge and amp meter in five round dials (the gauges were not marked with numbers, however.)[26] A four-barrel carbureted engine was now available with any body style. Additionally, reverse lights were an option added to the car from August 1964 production. The Mustang was originally available as either a hardtop or convertible, but during the car's early design phases a fastback model was strongly considered. For 1965, the Shelby Mustang was born, available only in a newly introduced fastback body version with its swept-back rear glass and distinctive ventilation louvers.[27] In 1965 they built 15,079 Mustangs that featured the GT Equipment Group.[28] For 1966, they built 25,517 GTs.[29] According to Jim Smart production guide, the fastback would have been the most common, followed by the coupe and then convertible.
The 1967 model year Mustang was the first significant redesign of the original model. Ford's designers began drawing up a larger version even as the original was achieving sales success, and while "Iacocca later complained about the Mustang's growth, he did oversee the redesign for 1967."[46] The major mechanical feature was to allow the installation of a big-block V8 engine. The overall size, interior and cargo space were increased. Exterior trim changes included concave taillights, side scoop (1967 model) and chrome (1968 model) side ornamentation, square rear-view mirrors, and usual yearly wheel and gas cap changes. The high-performance 289 option was placed behind the newer 335 hp (250 kW; 340 PS) 390 cu in (6.4 L) FE engine from the Ford Thunderbird, which was equipped with a four-barrel carburetor. During the mid-1968 model year, a drag racer for the street could be ordered with the optional 428 cu in (7.0 L) Cobra Jet engine which was officially rated at 335 hp (250 kW; 340 PS) all of these Mustangs were issued R codes on their VINs.

I got the original run of this kit for Christmas when I was 14. I had already built the kit the year prior so I put it away thinking if I ever had a son or daughter, I'd build it with them. 23 yrs later and I just started working on it with my two oldest sons 😊

Great Job. The emerald paint job pops out. You have taught me the value of using spray paints I can find in my local stores rather than ordering more expensive hobby products...and they work just as good or better! Pre assembling parts and not being tied by the instructions order is educational too. I even broke down and ordered a testors paint set (something I haven't used in many years). Keep teaching

I haven't built a model kit since I was a kid back in the late '60's but I've been binge watching your videos and you have inspired me to jump head long back into the hobby - I've order a number of vintage NASCAR kits. And, with a full scale 'Stang sitting in the garage, I'm gonna order this one as well. You sir are the Bob Ross of model building. Thank you!

@@hpiguy Yes, you are spot-on sir. I think you have developed exactly the right approach to model building. These things should be built in a weekend and not take weeks and months to complete. I think if a build takes too long, the fun factor is lost - perhaps this is true with all hobbies. I need to be mindful of this as I go forward. Thank you again and I'm looking forward to your next project and continuing to explore the other builds on your channel.

@@bamabiker750 Models should be built however the owner of the kit wants to build them is what I mean. If they have fun taking a year to create the most perfect factory replica, that's cool. What's not cool is demanding everyone else build to their standards. Everyone needs to enjoy their hobbies in their own way and let others do the same. Thanks for stopping by!

Gold pilot pens work good too, for chassis, engine detail as well as other parts. When you are finished with the pens clean them well, then wrap blue masking tape around the cap and the body of the pen. This helps so they don't dry out.

This kit and the 67 Shelby GT350 are similar to each other. With a few differences. With the Shelby I had a few fitment issues with the front and rear fascias, where I had to fill in. Other than it's a nice kit. I've built two lol. An 06 release plus the most release of the Shelby kit. One was show room new and the other a rusted out barn find lol. Probably pick this kit up at Hobby Lobby if they have it or at hobby shop an hours drive away from me lol.

Question, do you clear coat over your decals, then put that polish on? Or clear coat, decals then polish over all? What is your order for that? .

Good job on the Mustang. If this was a real car it would be ready to get top dollar at one of the auctions.

I think it would be cool if you cut out the hood and made it sit like it’s open and put hood supports to show off the engine

LOL, some of you peeps really worry about that. It's funny. It's entire job is to catch overspray and it works perfectly at it. Why would I waste model time scraping paint off the walls of a paint booth? The filter is changed every 6-8 kits, so every month.

That's right Jason! It' gets the job done and it works really well catching overspray.

@@hpiguy appearance , maybe? Things like that just drive my crazy. I scrape off the supports of my paint stand every three to four uses.

Do you have any suggestions on how to fit the front cowl? Also, what's the best way to paint the two grille inserts in the front cowl?
