In this video I review this classic 1967 Honda S800 roadster freshly restored and owned by Honda UK. The S800 was made from 1966-70, following the S500 and S600 sportscars before it - Honda had only started making cars in 1963. I first saw one in the mid-80s and have been waiting over 35 years to finally drive one. My only concern - this thing is absolutely tiny! And I'm tall. Will I fit? Can I drive it? You might be surprised - watch the video now!

I used to own a 1967 hard-top coupe version of one of these fantastic little cars. Great fun to drive in the dry, not so good in the wet. The demise of this great little car came when the gear box seized up, no chance of a replacement.

Oh man, such a wonderful car! I sought a video on this car out because, even though very well aware of existence for decades, I wanted to see a video review to get a visceral feel. My perception has always been British (or Italian) style with the ever-so-desirable Japanese emphasis on reliability / affordability. Isn't it rather mind-boggling that Honda went from motorcycles to the addition of cars in 1963, and just a little over ten years on had a solid foothold in the US market (where I live). Having been brought up on a standard diet of typical 1970s BIG GM cars, and a disdain for Japanese and other small cars, my first car ended up being an immaculate third generation Civic that I ADORED and regret ever parting with. It did everything right by my standards. I have had various other makes and models since, but that Civic was phenomenal. I can't imagine what heaven this would be like to have for a pleasant summer evening drive (and no insecure truck / SUV drivers attempting to intimidate you!!!).... BEAUTIFUL!!! THANK YOU, SIR!!!!

Great review, Shahzad! I see from your smile that by driving this 60s Japanese sports car you have made your dream come true. Indeed this Honda S800 has everything you could want. 70hp for 700kg is an optimal power-to-weight ratio. That's why you have a lot of fun driving it. My father felt the same feeling when he drove the Fiat 127 sport which had the same weight-to-power ratio. These cars were nice because they were very small but very spacious inside and light. They were made for fun and not for passing a crash test. This is why all cars weigh twice as much today. Generally with four gears you can reach and exceed 180 km / h, max 200 downhill or with favorable wind. Above 195km / h you need 5 gears. This S800 is very sporty and graceful, I have seen that it has sensitive steering, good grip and great brakes. Fourth gear feels like an overdrive so you drive worry-free. Excellent and simple this S800. Congratulations Shahzad, you are a legend. Bye 😃👍

it's not based on their motorcycle engine, which was SOHC 2-cyl at the time. this is a 4-cyl, and has no oil pressure like a traditional engine. this was a new design from Honda.
